Trio charged with supermarket burglary

Three men have been charged in connection with a recent burglary at Greens Supermarket in Loubiere.

Bert Williams of St. Vincent and Martin Luther Jno Baptiste of Newtown appeared before Magistrate Candia George this morning on a joint charge of burglary, while Eustace Joseph of Point Michel was charged with handling stolen goods.

It is alleged that Williams and Jno Baptiste entered as trespassers and stole $17,130 in cash, $638.45 worth of groceries and a cell phone valued at $150 between 10:30 p.m. on November 19 and 3:30 p.m. on November 20,2010.

The items belonged to Paul Green, the charge stated.

Joseph was accused of handling $12,370 of the said cash.

The men were not required to plea as the matters are indictable and are to be heard at the High Court of Justice following a preliminary inquiry.

Bail was closed for Williams as he was considered a flight risk.

“He has no roots in Dominica… If he leaves and goes to St Vincent it will be very difficult to get him back in Dominica,” the police prosecutor told the court in his objection to bail.

Meanwhile, bail was opened for Jno Baptiste. However, he could not supply the court with a proper surety – in his case a requirement. His father, who appeared at the court, said that he was not there to stand him bail.

He was remanded at the state prison until next Thursday, when he will reappear at court.

Joseph on the other hand was luckier. He was granted bail in the sum of $15,000 with a friend as surety. He is set to reappear in court on May 5, 2011.

The preliminary inquiry for Williams and Jno Baptiste is set for May 26, 2011.

I say ten years would be the ideal punishment for the crime at stock farm with the weekly punishment of twelve lases at the old market, just for entertainment as a form of community repayment, the romans did it, that would generate money that would go towards generating the economy.there should be an entrance fee, cold drinks and solem music. that would stop all that nonesense, stealing, rape, wive beating, people stop it.

if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.
they learn to steal from watching a man steal millions out the mouths of his citizens a week before the idiots re-elect him. his ministers cant control their emotions and show their feminine side by bitching in front of quests. what is really going on in this country?
people coming here to steal and give this country a bad rep.
if i am going to get a slap on the wrist best i go into politics and rob legally as i make laws prohibiting investigations into my financial earnings.
where are the so-called educated people?
till someone stands up for the people, death and envy shall be the downfall of the isle of nature.
EITHER WAY I WILL PROFIT FROM IT.

  20. person from that village
    November 25, 2010

please note that Joseph did not get a different treatment.

Secondly this is the second time that this supermarket is being robbed.  It is unfortunate because Mr Green has chosen to put his supermarket at Loubeire and has employed quite a few persons from the village and this is the reward that he is getting.  The jno Baptiste boy is a son of a guy from the village who now lives at newtown.

I think that we need to learn to respect peoples property.  The bible clearly states that by the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread.  Some of those young persons just dont want to work hard for what they want.  Thye are choosing rather to do all kinds of illicit things girls as well as boys.

We often complain that Dominica doesnt have jobs yet I go to the market and i see that it is flooded with haitian vendors.  They come  to this island and they try to make something for themselves.  Why cant we do the same.  They same way they go ou tand ask people to farm thier lands we can do the same.

There should be no bail for any of those guys.  Let them take some time and think of the ills that they are inflicting on society.

If Mr. Green decides to close down his supermarket there would be at least 12 persons out of a job.

Society needs to be harder on those kind of crimes

  21. okay then
    November 25, 2010

    @Island_Accents
Joseph didn’t get special treatment he had somebody to bail him and Jno. Baptiste didn’t have somebody to bail him and Williams didn’t get bail because they afraid he go back to St.Vincent backdoor…
in my opinion none of them lazy rascals should get bail they too thief. why they not going in garden to plant fig and dasheen?
send them stockfarm! some of those young boys too lazy and like things the easy way. Christmas coming so they need money to go town and flash.. damn thief they be
