Three more Grenada police officers charged in beating death

Three more Royal Grenada Police Force officers were charged with manslaughter on Sunday in the death of a Grenadian-born Canadian resident Oscar Bartholomew.

Edward Gibson, Shaun Ganness and Ruddy Felix had been detained in custody since Friday before being charged.

Two other police officers, Kenton Hazzard and Wendell Sylvester, were earlier charged with manslaughter on Saturday.

This is a good reminder for our Police Chief to review with his senior officers the procedures for securing the safety of our citizens in their custody…. We are all innocent until proven guilty…in a court of law!

Why should the woman be punished? What part she played in the death of the man, except being the subject of the man’s mistake? Without more, you are advocating that she should be visited with retribution? Common sense and reason have been thrown out the door replaced by emotionalism and subjectivity.

The female officer had nothing to do with it. She was genuinely scared. She is new to the force and again it was more than just mistaken identity. The news clipping you guys are reading is not entirely accurate and full of speculation which is something i have grown to understand about Grenadian news. It is not that credible.

I am not saying that what the officers did was ok in any way. They have all been charged, five of them to date, but a few bad apples does not have to spoil the whole batch. The story that you guys read does not give all the facts. If i only had what was read to go on i would be just as upset as some of you, but one cannot blame every police officer for the actions of a few. (Some of which were new recruits might i add)

    January 3, 2012

I am sure these supid, hot-headed officers in Dominica would have behaved in the same way. It is time that we begin to punish rogue officers for police brutality instead of the constant cover-up by other officers. This type of behaviour is really shameful. I do hope those Grenadian officers involved be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!!!!

I am not going to knock all policemen, but these police forces in the carribean have been plague with a bunch of ill mannered thugs, who just want a secured job, until they can migrate, meanwhile they doe want to see their people come home for some R n R they get jealous for what they doe know. I am sure these cops know the guy, they just downright spoon up.too many of them roll with the drug dealers.

according to your reasoning, mate, nobody should ever come to Dominica, due to all the robberies (and killings) that happen here.

Imagine you were a tourist, maybe white man, what would you consider before you chose where to go on holidays? right, you’d check on where you are least likely to get robbed or killed and where police takes you serious.

It is so sad that our government does not take this serious. Tourists could be such an awesome source of money of only our rule of law would work (ok, maybe things like a proper airport would also be wuite essential).

But as long as being a politician alone makes you rich, why should anyone in charge bother? Just take what you can get an leave, it is human, and very very sad

You need to hold your horses, Grenada’s police officers are always on patrol, always doing their jobs. It was unfortunate that the incident occurred but I live in Grenada and have spoken to ppl from the area and even police officers and there is more to the story than what you read on the news.
Grenada’s media houses are even worse than ours when comes to being political and misleading.

What more is there to the story? Did they have to treat him so inhumanely, fracturing his skull, breaking his hand, his wrist which lead to his death? How would you like to be treated in such a manner?
Is there an excuse for police officers to treat him in that manner? I am informing you that they are ignorant thugs, wicked of heart and were untrained or ignored their training. Did they think that they could get away with it?
For God’s sake, Oscar is one of them, a Grenadian who was visiting his homeland and mother and he found himself in this fracas, severely injured and is now in eternity.
For Grenadian nationals sake, they are police officers, “To serve and protect!” They should have known better.
I hope they will be punished severely for what they did to him and that they will never return to police duties. Please do not inform otherwise.
Every one who has a TV and Radio in Toronto of all has heard and also read what those Grenadian police officers did to Oscar. He did not deserve it. OK!
Tonight while I was out two white Canadian women spoke to me about this sad incident. They are shocked. This is to inform you that every Canadian and West Indian in Canada has heard about this and they are shocked. No exception worldwide. News travel.
Every country has its fair share of rogue cops. Some of them are imprisoned in Toronto of all due to atrocities committed towards people whom they apprehended; some of those people have died while being incarcerated. Other police officers have been dismissed from the Police Force. The Canadian public will not stand for their nonsense who are paid by taxpayers hard-earned dollars.
There are some good Cops. However, I do hope that this will be a lesson to all police officers world wide. Their Chief of Police should use this incident as a training session.
What happened to Oscar should never have happened. He died because he was too friendly. Can you imagine that?
We are each other’s keepers. We will not accept accuses. We want the truth and to punish those police perpetrators. Oscar’s blood is crying to Heaven for vengeance.
Consider what his parents, wife and other family members are going through. We are mourning with his family.

A very sad case indeed. But again, it can happen in any of these islands. Why? Because the same savages, and ignorant mentality exist in each and every island in the region. We see our policemen in action on the beat. You the public be the judge.

so the lady officer in question couldnt have come to the man’s rescue and simply said the man made a mistake and allow the man to go his merry way at this time of year when pple are expressing Christmas joy and togetherness…it is my opinion that the lady officer is just as guilty as those cave men representing the law…what a sad day for the image of that department..may the good LORD have mercy on their souls

Many femalecops get a high when male cops beat up on hapless victims on thier behalf. Many have been abused in thier early days or in thier present relationships and see this as a way of getting back.

Excellent question. If she has any common sense and compassion, she should have done that and asked them not to arrest him. So what type of police officer is she anyway. Who knows? She may be prejudice.
