Tiyani Behanzin and team finalising preparations for Peace Conference this weekend

On the eve of the much anticipated peace conference at Wesley this weekend, Magistrate, His Worship, Tiyani Behanzin and his organising  team are putting the finishing touches to the preparations for January 22-23 event.

The two-day activity will begin on Saturday, January 22 with closed sessions involving adult and juvenile offenders and members of the various local factions. The team has spent the last few weeks meeting a number of local persons in an effort to encourage the targeted groups to buy-in the concept of the importance of peace in their communities of Wesley, Woodfordhill and Calibishie.

Endorsements statements will be delivered by nine religious leaders on the final day of the conference on Sunday, January 23 from 3 pm at the Wesley Catholic Church. That day is open to the families of the targeted groups, members of the media and the wider general public. The activity will conclude at 6:20 pm.

The programme will also feature a discussion on ‘Youth and the Need for Peace’ followed by a panel discussion on ‘Crime and Peace’.

Criminologist, Dr. Peter St. Jean, Head of the University of the West Indies Open Campus Dominica, Dr. Francis Severin, Mr. Francis Joseph of ChildFund Caribbean, Mr. Delroy Williams of the National Youth Council, Father Celcus Auguiste, Father Herman Sharplis, Father Franklyn Cuffy and Sister Alces Williams  have all confirmed their participation at the event.

The conference will not feature speeches by politicians but the Parliamentary Representative for the Wesley constituency, Hon. Gloria Shillingford as well as representatives from local village councils have been invited to attend the conference.

Commendable!!! It was also wise to make the event as apolitical as possible with the exclusion of the political speeches.

Whether Wesley people are involved or not is immaterial, I am from Wesley and I am pleased that some one thought it necessary to address the criminal activity in that region, where ever that person is from is insignificant, the result can only be beneficial to the community so let us rally round and give this our maximum support.

It would probably have been wise to ask Dr Benjamin, the psychiatrist from wesley, to do a presentation on the psychology of the criminal mind but I applaud Mr Benhazin efforts.

Thanks to mr.Behansin and other members of the Peace Team who are trying to bring some sanity to the North East. Crime is just the symptoms of the economic problems, and the lack of legal jobs in the area. Since 2000 the Wesley / Woodfordhill area have lost over 50% of the legal income. The young poeple are idle and the Devil like to play with idle hands. Tell the Labour Government to restore the economy of the area.

    @ Wesley person:

I too am from Wesley although I agree with what you say I am looking at it from another angle. Wesley has a large number of professionals, however none of them took the initiative to attempt to bring peace to our lovely community and also Wesley is a very political community (like all communities in Dominica) hence any time locals get involved it becomes political. I support the move wholeheartedly and wish that the criminals attend and as a result of what the good magistrate is trying to do come to the realisation that life is to be lived in peace love and unity. I hope that as a result of this they put down their guns, stop selling drugs and get rid of their “badness”. Wesley I pray one day you will be restored to the loving peacefull community that you once were.

For Real, Last April Wesley had it first Peaceful World Movement with Dr. Peter St. Jean and Ms. Benjamin at Wesley Pentecostal church, the Woodfordhill Primary school and the Woodfordhill Catholic Church and the North East Comprehensive. This is a follow-up to what Wesley people already start. So Wesley Locals are involved in their community. Please get the facts correct. Then there was a two session of a Radical Jam for Peace in June of 2011. Did you hear of the students and community person who were honoured at those events. Please ask around before you make statements or write uninformed comments on the blog

I think this approach towards peace building is a very honorable one. Keep up the good work Behanzin. Let me extend my gratitude to all those who are on the team working towards restoring peace in our communities and by extension country. I do hope the targeted group(s) will gain the knowledge of building constituencies that support a culture of peace and a deeper understanding of theories and practices of peace movements and non violence.

A much as this is a very good thing happening in Wesley, I am perturbed that Mr. Behanzin could not find any one from Wesley or Woodfordhill to make a presentation or contribution to the persons in that area he is trying to out reach too.

Wesley and Woodfordhill folks need to see persons in their community actively participating in their peace development. When these presenters leave and go to their respect communities, who will the persons from Wesley and Woodfordhill reach out to in time of crisis?

Be respectful to us and get us involve in the peace of our community. Don’t come talk to us and then leave. Come better than this. I was expecting to see presentation from reputable Wesley persons who are not political.

Wesley is one of the communities on the island with more professionals than anyone would imagine. We have many, many professionals. Respect us. We need the help and should all work together but don’t exclude us from what is going on. I am pissed by the line up exclusion of Wesley presenters.

Role model my …. Tiyani will bring down Dominica.

Here is a guy who was disciplined by the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in England for illegally offering legal services when he had not met all the qualifications to practice law.

His tenure as a magistrate has been marked by conflict and irresponsibility. When are we gonna learn?
