“Twisted Shotz” lands Guadeloupe woman in court

A Guadeloupe woman, who apparently has a weakness for sweet alcoholic drinks, now faces a fine of $500 to be paid immediately or she will have to spend one month behind bars.

This after she pleaded guilty to stealing three packs of “Twisted Shotz,” a sweet and mixed alcoholic drink, from H.H.V Whitchurch and Co.

Medjine Louise was shopping with her family on Wednesday evening when a security guard noticed her putting three packs of the drink in a plastic bag.

He followed her out of the supermarket and asked her to return the items when a struggle ensued between them. The defendant ran but was caught outside Marpin’s building with the aid of two police officers.

She was arrested and brought to police headquarters where she explained to officers, “Somebody told me it sweet, so I take three of them.”

The defendant with the aid of an interpreter apologised to the court and said that it was her first time getting into trouble.

Magistrate Candia George explained to the defendant that she was giving her a chance since it was her first time getting into trouble and since she had pleaded guilty to the offence.

She stole three packs. Stealing is a weakness. They are bold to do something like that and not consider if they are caught they will be arrested and could be imprisoned.
Some people cannot help themselves. They need to be rehabilitated. If her children saw her steal, this is a bad example for them.
It is amazing how many people commit crimes and make excuses for them. I suppose hoping to receive compassion from the Court. The fact is, the act was committed and it is against the Law to steal and to deprive owners of their purchased goods.
Theft is costly and also affects those who do not steal. In the end law-abiding customers pay for it due to higher costs.
Thou shalt not steal. It is better to be honest and ‘yes’ ask, if that is possible, rather than steal; not that the owner will agree.
Whatever does not belong to you, leave it alone. If you can afford it, pay for it. The items will always be there. In time you may be able to afford it.

Whitchurch really needs to pay DNO for that free publicity. Since many people were not aware of the products presence, now they are curious and will want to sample it to see how SWEET it is. No bona-fide advert could have been so effective

Even the foreigners coming here, running away from security. Are they of the opinion that, no law, not even the constitution can stop them. Did they hear his utterances? The world is a global village.

It was a big mistake to wrestle with the Police and try to run away. She could not run faster than him. He told her to return the stolen goods, giving her the opportunity not to be arrested. She did not obey. She must bear the consequences. Now she has a criminal record.

what you think Dominicans alone that have the habbit of stealing? Come on do not put your hands in fire for other countries? When a Dominican make a simple mistake the whole world getting to know about it. They are known for that especially when they know that no cameras are at the place. I worked in the BVI and trust me i had the experience with some white people who walk in and take alcoholic drinks, snacks just name it any thing they can put their hands on and put it in their bags and walk out like they did not see what they come for while the others that came in with them try to keep you busy asking you for all kind of things just to give the person time to get out. So when they do something let them take the blame.

A little bit of advise to our security officers the defendant should have been accosted or arrested whilst still at the supermarket after she was observed taking the items and heading to the door right there she should have been accosted. I know some bush lawyers will argue that once she was still in the store they could not prove she had intention of stealing the items,that1s BS” By allowing her to step outside the store quite naturally she made a run for it there in lies the bigger problem. The ensuing security Guard the vole`and members of the public were definitely in line to get hurt and that would spell trouble for H.H.V. Whitchurch because the security guard is employed by their establishment. So officers be careful and the people who employ those guards should brief them on what they are required to do or not do given the nature and situation at hand. Security work is big man and woman thing, therefore lets all ensure others safety in the execution of our duties. That`s my two cents. Been there done that!

      August 17, 2012

That is the most idiotic comment I’ve ever read. I don’t want to disrespect anyone but are you serious… Security guards have no guns and HHV whitchurch is not responsible for the actions of someone who steals from them and is in no way affiliated with them. The sucirity guard made sure she was stealing rather than give her the excuse that she was only using her bag to carry the items to the cashier in the absense of a shopping cart. You don’t want to embarrass people and yourself for no good reason.

she is from Grand bay .,., she lives most of her life in gwada

  16. August 16, 2012

why give her a chance when if it was a Dominican who did that in Guadeloupe her or she would receive a bigger punishment, even paying ten times what she was charged in DA, in Guadeloupe there is no such thing as first time offender, them French people always tell you that they hate thieves

The courts in DA really do not know how to make money

    • B.E.B
      August 16, 2012

She would’nt do that in her country and why should one think that this was the first time she was in diffilculty with the law. She should be made an example so the others would learn. See how far she went before she was being able to be captured.

        August 16, 2012

        @ B.E.B.

You made a good point. It may not have been the first time she stole. A thief is not a thief until caught. Now she is caught.

    • vanessa
      August 16, 2012

me I French but my mom is Dominican and that is not true first time you do a crime they send you to do some community work, ask and body

      • Justice and Truth
        August 16, 2012

        @ vanessa

If it is the first offence and the amount is small, they should be given community work. This could entail picking up garbage :) or sweeping the sidewalks, cutting the grass, cleaning the drainage, etc. in certain areas. The embarrassment could cause them to change.
They should also be expected to report to the Police Station be it one day a week. Failing this, they will be imprisoned.
Some prisoners in Canada/Toronto also serve time on week-ends or during the week. It all depends on the circumstances of their offence. They must all pay for their crime.
Many commit crimes, some serious ones and are not caught. They are full of tricks; cunning people. Some of them commence from youth, a very young age. If only it could be rooted out of them before they grow older and become habitual, worst criminals.

In Dominica the entire system is anti-local and pro-foreigners. That’s why foreigners coming out from wherever and walk-over people.

Gwada people like to say they hate a thief yet one is caught right in poor Dominica ‘tiefing’ trifles.
