Two months in jail for cheddar cheese

It appears that cheddar cheese is just too much of a temptation for Royston Celaire.

That temptation landed him two months in jail after he was convicted of stealing two blocks of the cheese, worth $14.41, from Save a Lot.

He appeared in court on Tuesday.

According to court reports Celaire entered the business place on October 1 and was immediately placed under surveillance.

He went to the refrigerator, took something from it and placed it under his coat. He made a few rounds in the supermarket and then attempted to exit the establishment but was stopped by security.

A search of Celaire’s person uncovered the two blocks of cheddar cheese beneath his coat.

“I did not have money, so I take it,” the Newtown resident told the security officer.

Celaire, who has a long list of criminal convictions, now has two months in jail to think about his actions.

When members of our society has lost their way. The following questions should be asked. Why has they lost their way. When did they lost their way. How did they lost their way. Then the solution to these problems should be address.
90% of our agricultural is owned by people who have died or migrated and their children do not care anymore but the roads to these lands are in horrific conditions. solution fix the roads to the agricultural lands. Our school system is bad. the is no extra caricular activities for the kids. Where is the playing field for the children to play the sport. Idle hand are going to find things to do. The condition of the schools are poor and the buildings are in deplorable conditions. It is sad. The authorities have let the children down. SHAME SHAME SHAME

I realize that this man may be a a nuicance to society,Yes he has a record.Hopefully putting him in jail may serve him a lesson, assuming he has not been to jail.If he has I think he would better
serve the community by cleaning the trash alongside the streets in Roseau.Cleaning the drains. There are so many inconsistences in sentencing in Dominica.Aren’t there ‘Sentencing
guidlines”It seems the Magistrates just arbitraily sentence people depends on the kind of day they are having.Folks this is not good.for our country. They have to revise these law or the Judical System needs to intervenve. This is the 21st Century and the Court System seem to be so outdated and down right Ridiculous.Where these

Suppose he had eaten the cheese before he passed the cashier.
How would the court prove that one, if he denies it.A Scan or surgery would not prove anything because by then it would have gone to waste. Ha, ha.

Two months in jail for cheddar cheese – SMH. Maybe he should have carried a gun then he would be free on bail and serve no time in jail whatsoever. The justice system in DA is a joke!

how much does it cost the state to house, cloth and feed this man for 2 months? why prison could it have been community service? over $14.14… really!

    October 3, 2012

That is B.S. two months at the tax payers expense for $20??? What about making the man do some work.

There are drains to be cleaned. One week labour would cost the state less and benefit the community.

    Think outside the box people

ok ,he could have easily won his case.

    1) did he leave the establishment? NO!

2)yes he had the cheese on his person but he didn’t leave with it, NO?

3)he had to be arrested outside the doors of the establishment with the cheese to be considered a thief

4)if he had reached for the door with his hand , he could have simply said that he was opening the door for someone. being courteous .

5)If he was asked why the cheese was in his coat pockets . maybe he has athritis and can’t hold on to cold items that long so he placed it there.

with all that said I’m not saying what he did was right, but if he was arrested before he left the door then he should have walked free, sued the business place for defamation of character and bought all the chees in the fridge

My dear,,, if he passed the cashier and was at the door with the cheese under his coat, walking like he has nothing,,, he had no intention to pay for the cheese. the security has all his mental faculties to know that… Moreover the man accepted that he did not have money so he took it… so think about it,,,,,

Why are you trying to justify the actions of this individual….he did admit that he had no money; hence he TOOK the cheese! It people because of people like you that there will never be justice

He went pass the cashiers, doesn’t that count as a person attempting to steal the product? If he was left to exit the building he would say is somebody that gave it to him and that he was never inside that place..

There are baskets and trollies available for ease of shopping so persons like him with arthritis need not hang on to cold items for too long.

If you was his lawyer and i was the DPP you just lost your case…. lol

No law suits so no cheese hahaha

      • wow law is law
        October 3, 2012

yes he did go past the cashiers , but the law states that he has to have exited the building with the unpaid item.

        did he exit the building?

        no he didn’t

        I can’t hear you ?

        NO HE DIDN’T

        exactly my point.

your second point about the baskets and trolleys

a man with athritis , holding unto those thin handle baskets …OUCH!! painful

      Well, to define Larceny:
The intentional unlawful taking and carrying away (asportation) of the property of another with the intent to deprive the owner of the property.
To respond to your pointers above, he did not have to leave the place of business with the product; the slightest movement away from the area where the product was with the unauthorized taking suffices for larceny; So he did steal. At this point the cost of the product does not measure up with the punishment pronounced; but again it has to do with what the law in Dominica is. We also have to look at the long list of run-ins with the law that he’s had and the convictions. It is up to the judge to use his discretion and pronounce whatever punishment this crime warrants.

First of all we have to define Larceny:
The unlawful and intentional taking and carrying away (asportation) of the property of another with the intent to deprive the owner of the property. The thing is, the slightest movement away from the original place, unlawfully, with the owners property and with the intent to deprive (take it away from the owner – owner no longer has possession) is considered larceny or theft. He was not authorized to take the property nor did he pay for it. Secondly, the punishment should be based on the laws in Dominica and in addition we have to look at the long list of run-ins with the laws, convictions, et. al. Lastly, it is up to the judge to use his discretion and pronounce a fitting punishiment

Not Dominica alone our society as a whole has lost it`s way. A delivery boy sexually abused a woman at her home on her bed whilst her seven year old daughter was asleep next to her but was not aware that her mother was being raped. Her is the real madness when the defendant was question why he raped the woman. He replied,” because I felt Horney”. So this madness is sweeping all over.

I am not saying the man should take the people cheese but that is getting rediculous, 2 months jail for $14….I wonder if $14.41 is going to send save alot bankrupt.
