Dennison “Dice” Joseph, Dominica’s reigning calypso monarch, says while a warrant for his arrest was issued by the magistrate’s court on Tuesday, that warrant is no longer in effect because he did eventually arrive in court.
Dice’s late appearance had been preceded by the issuing of the arrest warrant, after the court heard that he had failed to show up in court as ordered to.
According to police prosecutor Inspector Claude Weekes who made the request, Dice was “physically” served with summons and was properly notified of his court date.
Prosecutor Weekes said he should have formally informed the court if he was unable to attend court.
However the calypsonian has since confirmed that he did put in a late court appearance on Tuesday, and that the arrest warrant has been dropped.
Dennison “Dice” Joseph is before the court on a three year old charge of possession of cannabis and possession with intent to supply.
The matter has been adjourned to July 12, 2012.

Wrong is wrong! How could he be late in attending court? Come on guys. The issue is that he failed to show up – A CRIME – thus the warrant was issued.

On one side all you crying for justice and for the law to be enacted, police officers and the court to toughen up, but as soon as the same law and court doesn’t go with your beliefs – then it is faulted.
Give the court the opportunity to do it’s job and ensure that the law and rules are followed. He failed to show up for his court appearance – so the warrant was issued. He should have been on time!!!!!!!!!!

I in no way condone any violation of the law and particularly when it comes from a public figure. However, we need to give the same level of criticism and chastize with the same vigour our political and religeous leaders when the wrong us. Dice is a young man who I believe wants to do good.This matter is three years old, has he been in trouble with the law since? Generally, I do not condone the use of any drug that negatively alters one’s functioning to the extent that harm is brought upon the individual, those around him and for that matter -the wider society. This includes both legal and illegal drugs i.e., alcohol, tobacco cigarettes, marijuana and crack cocaine to name a few. We have all witnessed the negative effects of the over/incorrect use of these drugs on individuals and families in our communities. From a medical/social standpoint, the abuse and/or incorrect use (not necessarily the use) of marijuana is bad. Until such time that the laws of the country are changed- the use and dealing of marijuana remains illegal. Therefore, irrespective of one’s opinion on whether the use of small quantities of marijuana should be legalized, all law abiding citizens, especially those who are looked up to by the youth, must respect the law and be prepared to face the consequences if found to be in breach
