UPDATE: Man found dead in hotel room

DOMLEC’s General Manager Colin Cover has confirmed one of the company’s contractors was discovered dead in his hotel room.

“We at DOMLEC would like to report the death of a contractor who has become quite a friend of DOMLEC because he had visited and work with us,” Cover said.

The man has been identified as Jeff Close, a British citizen, who worked for MAN Diesel in Houston. On its website MAN Diesel describes itself as the  “world market leader for large diesel engines for use in ships and power stations.”

Cover said Close was in Dominica working for DOMLEC and appeared healthy when he left work on Friday. “He left work on Friday evening apparently healthy and was expected to return to work on Saturday morning and when he did not show up inquiries were made and he was found in his hotel room,” the DOMLEC boss said.

He said presently there is no evidence of foul play however investigations continue.

Cover said Close, 55, left behind five children ranging in age from 12 to 19. He was expected to go on vacation with his wife later this week.

I wish DNO would take their time, get the facts, before they come with a breaking news with wrong information.
Earlier today they (DNO) said the man was a US citizen only to find out that they were wrong. because of wrong information, people were quick to make their comments because as we know, if the man were an American as previously reported, that would put us is bad light.
I find Dominica is too small for this type of misinformation and all DNO needs to do is make sure they get the facts before they break news.

I don’t think the article ever said the man was an American…it said he was a british citizen who worked for a houston….company. Read carefully next time.

      • ????????
        December 13, 2011

The article DID say the man was American, age 65. It was later amended to say British, age 55. I read the article, blinked, and the information changed. For a minute, I thought I was hallucinating, until I began reading the comments that were posted as a result of the change.

I feel sorry for some of us Dominican people if at the end of our pathetic lives our deaths make it on to DNO to see some of the comments that will be made blotching the memory of us.
Is that really the mentality of some of the people here on the “Friendliest Place On Earth”?
I knew this man. I worked with this man. He does not deserve some of the comments here. Not in the least.
My heartfelt condolences goes out to his family and love ones left behind. May the good Lord care for the dearly departed. May his soul rest in peace.
    Goodbye friend.

This is Mrs. Jeff Close. I would love to thank all the positive remarks made on this website, especially embarassed. My husband was a kind, warm, well respected individual. He treated Dominica as a second home and always talked about the wonderful people he met at DOMLEC. This is a trying time for us all and his family is extremely grateful for all the love they have felt throughout the world. Thank you embarrassed for your comments, and bless you.

My condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Mr Close.

It so sad to read some of the comments. We know that most Dominicans are caring, compassionate people, its just a pity that a few just love to wallow in other peoples grief, and always think the worse.

What difference does it make knowing the identity of the hotel? It’s not like you people patronize the hotels in the first place. Furthermore, someone can die of natural causes anywhere. So what’s the big deal?

wow… a man die in his hotel room and is murder? he most likely could have died of natural causes or he could’ve even commited suicide. stop jumping to hasty conclusions (when more info comes out I will change my tune or say I told you so. lol!.

I guess allowing you to know the name of the hotel would be bad publicity for the hotel itself. After finding out the circumstances surrounding the death of this man, the name of the hotel will be disclosed. I truly hope you undestand, cause you would not want any more bad news about your business if you owned it.
May the good Lord bless him and comfort his family in their time of grief.

  26. Donna thomas
    December 12, 2011

It could be that the man died of a heart attack or some underlying condition he may of had, why is there all this negativity, if any americans saw some of the comments made, and they where thinking of coming to Dom, they may decided to go some where else, and you know that if america goes, so does england and europe, and from what i have herd of late, Dominica needs as much help in the tourist department more than ever.
Dominicans, stop being so negative and hard on your country and country people, be positive and show the world that the beauty of the island is matched by the beauty of the Dominican people, cos i think ya all lovely.

  27. Who Cares

    December 12, 2011

Well, I am not going to say too much right now, but with the level of anti-Americanism that is being perpetuated in this country, I would not be surprised if locals are targeting Americans!! I hope to God this was not a murder! Please God let it not be!

    • I am truly Dominican
      December 12, 2011

That is such a cynical statement, why did you think of the worst in the first place and did not think that this man may have had some underlying illness, or that it may be through natural causes. Man! I thought we in Dominica love our citizens and country, but statements like this certainly gives me second thoughts. Please man come up with something different instead of this sick and tired statement.

    • Malthus
      December 12, 2011

Your kind of reasoning that is what puts Dominica at risk. Before having any facts look where you go with that? What level of anti-americanism that is being perpetuated in Dominica? you people have such loose tongues. He could have suffered a heart attack or had an underlying health condition, but without any other information you already put a negative cloak over Dominica.

      • December 12, 2011

what you Dominicans need to understand Americans do listen to your news, and yes there are a lot of Anti American in your island, the USA embassy is in Barbados, also keep in mind that there are Americans and Americans business in your island lately we been hearing a lot of anti American talk in the island

    • December 12, 2011

Your commentary is sad. If you are not going to say anything..don’t say it. Death can occur at anytime and for multiple reasons including natural causes. That could happen on a remote Island such as D/A and away from the mainland, America in that case. I would not have injected that Anti-American sentiment in any conversation. Allow the American corroner to decide how the gentleman died and keep his family and D/A in your prayers.

They are just great pretenders. They call themselves hating America but when they or their female relatives get pregnant they run up to America to give birth and leave the hospital bills for the American tax payers.

You don’t see any of them rushing to Venezuela to give birth. There’s a saying from the folks home, “THEY HATE AMERICANS BUT THEY LOVE THEIR BISCUITS”

I haven’t seen or hear any Anti-Americanism or hatred of Americans which you refer to. What i have seen and heard are very (just) criticism of American Foreign policies9(even by Americans themselves) especially regarding their double standards in the Middle East, Africa and even in their own backyard here in the Caribbean.
If you cry anti-Americanism for pointing out the Americans blatant one sided support for the Israelis against the Palestinians with regard to the Israelis occupation/confiscation of Palestinian lands and building settlements for Jews only, the courting of some dictators in the middle East while at the same time using their military might to over-throw others, The use of assassination drones to terrorise and murder citizens of certain countries they don’t see eye to eye with i.e, Pakistan, Somalia among others, the blockade of Cuba for a number of years whereby ensuring Cuban citizens languish in poverty and the American ‘wild West’ approach to diplomacy, and I’m sure this list is not exhaustive. On the contrary, Dominicans like most other Caribbean people have affinity with American people more than people from any other continents in the world. In addition the majority of Dominicans living in Dominica have a relative living in the US so i don’t see how you can brand us as anti-American. If you believe that it is wrong to have an opinion about American Foreign policy then I’m afraid, my friend, that you are still bounded by the shackles of slavery. Time to free-up your mind.
