UPDATE: NECS student in police custody

One young man is assisting the police with investigations into a stabbing incident that occurred during a sporting activity in a northern community.

On Tuesday afternoon, at about 1:30pm, students of the North East Comprehensive School (NECS) were on the Londonderry Playing Field, engaged in sporting activities, when a fracas developed between two students.

The scuffle resulted in one student being stabbed on the head, left arm and left arm pit. He was transported to the Marigot Hospital where he was given primary health care.

DNO can now confirm the student who was stabbed is from the village of Concord.

According to the North Superintendent in charge of the north Duke Severin, the alleged assailant is currently in police custody.

what a shame on those students who cant respect themself and their teachers. the students at NECS have it better now, because the government provided free transportation to take to & from school, but in my days that was not available. they have nothing to worry about because it is their parents who are providing all their needs. & look at the way that they are regarding their parents. they are not showing NO INTEREST in their education, they were sent to school to learn, but instead they are involved in crimes & all sorts of things that are not pertaining to education. those who are not interested in their education now will suffer the consequences later.

When a student mis-behaves and is reported to the principal, he is in the schools’court. The parents (his layers)are called to the school. They work with him and he may reform. They may abuse the teachers and he continues along his merry road doing as he pleases.
He leaves school, continues down his usual road and ends up before the Judge. His parents get him a layer since they can’t represent him in court. He is convicted. They go home sad and in tears. Can someone tell me where thil “nice boy” goes?
He goes home too. To a new home to be some seasoned criminals’.
young people take heed. listen to your teachers. live, love, laugh. look listen and learn. There are many positives around you. Identify them and keep them close to your heart. Hold close the concepts of responsibility, honesty. Cultivate cultures of trustworthiness, caring and sharing, respect and good citizenship.
finally seek the creator and hold him close.Walk in his paths of truth for ever.
To my dear friend on the hospital bed his parents brothers and sisters and Teacher Esta your pains will be remembered in my prayers. May the spirits of our kalinago forefathers be with our wounded warrior.

Well said. A solution to that is to have character screening and to group the children into special programmes. some of those children have never experience a good word from their own parents.

Someone actually said that they were waiting for me to comment on this one. I wasn’t going to initially because I have commented so many times on like matters I didn’t think repeating myself was needed.

These matters stem from the home. The teachers can do a world of good in their environments, but it is becoming even more evident that before that these are home training issues.
Let me put it this way, I remember one of the most hurtful things my dad did to me and it happened to change my life around was when he sat me down one day, just the two of us, and he had a heart to heart with me and told me that after he tried his best with me all he could say to me was that he was disappointed in me. Those words and the look on his face did the trick. I could see that he wasn’t trying to fool me into feeling guilty and he was angry and blaming me. He decided to have an honest discussion with me and asked for my views and he listened to me. And when he concluded and said his peace, it lasted in my mind and I couldn’t take another action without thinking of how I would be either making him feel better or worst.
Parents need to develop that relationship with their children where they get input from the kids. Mostly I see parents just barking orders and dishing out punishment in frustration and sometimes anger. All the kids do is repeat it, but then the outside influence will guide the children to more violent measures than a belt.

everybody not like you or your father…speak for self and besides some children once they set their mind to something it’s done..there is no changing of mind no matter how much you speak to them..

Lets keep repeating and keep on saying that it stems from the home and do nothing to keep the students engage in school. Let us make school a hostile and toxic environment for the students, while we wait on some dead beat mom and dads to do their jobs with these children. There are some parents that I would not let raise my dogs and cats, therefore, the school which is a teaching institution should find ways to turn children into students.

Students should not see school as a place that they are told to go to, but a place that they see as a learning institution which prepares them for the future.

We can all agree that parents should raise a proper and decent child to send to school in an all tucked in uniform well-fed and ready to learn. Well guess what, it is not happening, we are not seeing that, yet we keep asking sperm donors and recipients to raise children for greater society. Well good luck!

After all, what do we call people who keep using the same methods repeated and not getting a different result, well guess what…. the parents aren’t the crazy ones. I wish, the parents would ALLLLL raise beautiful children who are ready to attend YALE and HAVARD. But until then, as unfortunate as it is, the school has to play the teaching role. Not a bad deal, if you ask me. What is going on in the school that makes the children want to learn. The bare walls, the hard floor, the hot rooms, the poor lighting, the harsh teachers, the ancient system of discipline, the one size fits all curriculum are part of the problem. Every thing that goes wrong is always blamed on the parents, well lets try something different for a change nuh.

T.V. and internet are like substitute parents. It no longer takes a village to raise a child, but T.V. teaches these little “bad boys/girls” that it is a crime to be disciplined by their parents or anyone in authority.

The days when chewing gum in class was grounds for punishment are over. Dominica schools are becoming like American schools where kids feel FREE to assault and disrespect teachers and their peers and still expect to get away with it.

The days when you had to raise your hand in class to ask a question has been long gone. If this is not dealt with now this might trigger a “columbian style” shoot out – I really hope not, I have faith it won’t but faith WITHOUT works is dead!

The dress code of some is very provocative indeed especially SOME of the females. When this is mentioned to them, look out for an insult. It’s society gone loco!
While i am not against females having top positions, i always think that at co-ed schools in particular, we need tough people (men) to manage these schools.

It has been alleged that a teacher was alerted to this individual/individuals when another student was held at knife point and asked for money. Allegedly, the students were beaten and released, only to attack another student and cause bodily harm. If this actually took place as it was alleged, the teacher should have called the police immediately to deal with this situation instead of just meeting out physical punishment. Perhaps the stabbing would have been averted if the above alleged incident actually did occur.

Is not god alone dat need to watch our kids. It starts with parents. When our kids start displaying violent behaviour and having the tantrums and we as adults dismiss it and laugh it off. This the result. When principals have their cliques of favourite teachers and hod’s that they use to torment other teachers with high productivity and their underperforming colleagues are given A’s it the cause. When children are bombarded by violence on tv part of the cause n when the cabinopsychologist practise their bravado an force the CEO and ACE0 to micro manage their principals, force principals to take back b4 its expiration suspended students for violent offences and pay lip service to the real issues at school and the list goes on the month is ending let us witness the triumphant return of all students who assaulted their teachers. These things will stop when our children realise we are serious as adults and stop confusing them with our double standards. Most important of all its time we start acting and stop talking stating all the answers and solutions without it having any effects because once it leave our lips it hit ears get typed, shelved and thats the end of it

I think if i get enough monetary compensation it might soothe my temper… we cannot hit back the school or the parent nor the authorities… but we can make sure we put a long heavy cross on their back….that way they will be more vigilant. or at least they will change their policies. knife at school = expel, someone child get stab at school = $10,000 lawsuit….

Now more than ever the authority of the schools in Dominica is questionable, in my days at school no such incidents could ever happen, i must now contend that while the public service union forced Parry Bellot to retract his statement on productivity in the public service, the real truth is glearing showing itself, diciplene and orderly conduct must form part of the education system because thse are the virtues that make an individuals as he/she takes his place in society.
too many of our teachers are just there on the job for the salary, so much so that there are now some teachers on the job not qualified not capable but bcause they are flying red they are enjoy different positions in the teaching profession; kalinago territory is a classic wexample.

So why is a school boy carrying a knife (or what ever weapon he used) to school? I’m pretty sure they were not going to pick cane or mango as part of the lesson. It is very telling that he would come to school armed. What’s next? Are we waiting until they start bringing guns to school?

  23. stoic
    March 28, 2012

Ok folks …please stop expecting these to be like you …you can’t even compare kids who were brought up in the same home….you may have a kid who is very obedient while another kid who is very strong willed….you may realize that the type of discipline which may work on one child is ineffective on another child or it may even have negative impact such as rage or self pity on one child and not on the other

Stop comparing yourselves to kids who were raised in different homes….some teenagers are much more mature than some adults in their early 20’s…..Yes you did not act that way when you were their age because Thank god you did not go through what they went through growing up….and if you did, like I said before people are different

It is true everybody knows right from wrong….But you can’t deny that a child’s behavior can tell you what type of relationship he or she has with their parents.….so you lost your virginity at 25… Don’t compare yourself to a girl who was raised in a totally different environment than yours who lost hers at 14…the same goes for violent behaviors
The key is relationship folks, rules, rules and more rules, without a good relationship will lead to a very rebellious child with lots of behavior problems

why are students allowed with knives in school? Mechanisms should be put in place to ensure that students are searched and screened prior to entering classes. When a student leaves home with a knife or any other form of weapon he has only one intention. I don’t need to spell it out. Students found with weapons should be immediately expelled. No explanation. Stringent measures like these if imposed will help curb the problem that seems to be on the increase in our schools today. Appalling!

Why should we have to screened children for knives and weapon in the first place. What is the world coming to if we have to place metal detectors at school? Think of the years before when we adults use to go to school. The only time we see a knife is in the kitchen. Alas,

So sad a situation man. It is like every time a news story breaks about student violence. I hope the authorities realize that this is a trend and something needs to be done. It is quite obvious by now that there is no respect or fear of authority.

I am waiting to hear the latest excuse for this one. Let me guess, his parents abused him while growing up…

such a shame? by the way what are students doing with knives in school? mechanisms should be put in place where children are screened and searched before entering school. Once a weapon is found they should be immediately expelled. That will teach them a lesson. Zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. It’s time stringent measures are put in place to curb violence in schools. Enough is enough!

Well sad day for us . And ofcourse i smell more times to come and i mean serious . When i listened to the Gov’t meeting with Grammar school teachers as if almost blaming teachers i said something smelling . People , I hope you all remember the NECS which was before the St Andrews high had a similar situation which resulted in the death by stabbing of a young 16 year old boy from Wesley . The crime was committed by a young boy fromt the said village of Wesley . People protested that he too young to face the big man jail . Years later , under a new name , a situation occurs , this time not fatal , tho boy suffering in hosital , we can’t tell yet of his fate . We all need to get serious about our schools , since our children are becoming affected . Parents need to take back control like Sandie said , fathers need to play their roles and the community at large need to join a hand and network in championing this cause . And i mean we need to right now . Gov’t need to quit spending monies use-less-ly on things which can’t save lives and invest in policing , teaching and proper security measures at every schoool ,including surviellance cameras etc . Persons may argue the food they eat , the Tv , lack of parent guardian and poor teachers like the BBs , facebook , play stations , mavado , vybze cartel is to be blame . Some say since women started going to college and universities , having bigger jobs and working later hours as managers , things gone hay-wire . I won’t blame neither but all are responsibile including priest and pastors . One man said , our kids who couldn’t speak before are now retaliating . Our responsibilities are to find out what caused it , and how can we solve it ?

All the Government owned Secondary Schools are having severe discipline problems. No exception. It’s just God looking down on these schools.
Students are insulting principals, teachers, security, you name it.They are sent home when they return, they do it again and the cycle continues.. They disrupt the teachers class, and some teachers can hardly teach those who want to learn. IT’S JUST COMMESS AT THE GOVERNMENT OWNED SCHOOLS.

Government lay dwn universal education lik a bed of roses n nobody pointed out the throns?

    • Teacher
      March 28, 2012

Totally concur……We should not just jump into Universal Education without adequate preparation just because other countries are doing it. As it is right now, the children are missing one year of primary education since grade 7 no longer existed. More illiterates are entering high school, thus frustrating the teachers who were not properly trained with the new diversity. MOre illiterate means more defiance is to be expected. Then when the children acts up in class they blame the parents. The department continues to put a band-aid on a major issue. There needs to be revamp of the education act, curriculum and personnels. If persons are in a position for more than 20 years and the problem is getting worse, it simply means that those persons can no longer function effectively. They have outlived their position and need to try something new. Simple, IN any civilized nation, once these problems in the schools start to rise those education leaders would have been changed. Why is it different for DOminica. If a person is managing a company and the company is failing miserably year after year, the only thing to do is change the managers.

    • Secretary
      March 28, 2012

I so agree…….. even at the school where i work, I’ve noticed (and other staff members) have noticed that since we are not able to ‘screen’ our applicants (child and parent) we have gotten more of the ‘trouble-makers’. Already ‘they’ are academically inclined ‘they’ are the ones giving more trouble. Hence, Universal Education = SUCKS!. I am all FOR education for all mankind BUT be realistic not ALL can function in the ‘normal’ education system and THEREFORE ‘alternatives’ should be put into place for ‘their’ education…….. #justsaying

      • hmmm
        March 28, 2012

well, as long you continue to brand those you cannot screen as ‘troublemakers’ then you will have problems.

stop treating children like nuisances and blaming USE for everything and do your JOBS!

Teachers are getting paid to teach children. TEACH and stop being so self centered. Principals are paid to manage. The minister cannot be managing your schools for you! Nowadays, every time there is such an issue, teachers ask…”what about us.”

what about you? you are the friggin teacher, do your part!

I hope the principals of those high schools take note. My child has been repeatedly bullied in a certain High School and the principal for whatever reason has been given this matter a blind eye. I have gone to the police twice. My child is no trouble maker and I have advise him not to resort to fights but to report any form of violent behavior towards him to any teacher or the principal. I have made two reports to the police, one early last year on account of two boys who beat down my son and concerning a threat a student made to my child. On the second report,The officer told me to wait so another could accompany me to the school for investigation.I waited over two hours……nothing up to now. Soon after, MY child got beaten down on the head, by a classmate at school to the point that it affected his sight and was taken to the hospital by me. I have gone to the police, took him to see a doctor and now waiting……..Went to see the principal but only got to see his deputy. I was told that I would get a call from him to “settle” this harassment and bullying of my child by other students…….up to now….nothing….no call. My child had a dream last week Wednesday that a student attacked him and he in turn in defense killed the student. The next day, when he came home from school,he told me that this same student whom he dreamt about came from his back and just shoved him. My son is scared that one day he will get angry and do something drastic to these school bullies. This thing has affected his academic performance and sometimes he is even reluctant to go to school. Can someone tell me what to do? Please help!!!! I have gone on two occasions to speak with an education official who’s secretary after listening to the nature of my visit told me he was supposed to attend a meeting shortly.
I am very sorry about this situation but who knows… the school child on the run could have been a bully or trouble maker, or may have well acted as one who just couldn’t take it anymore.

    • Worried Parent
      March 27, 2012

Not all children come from a home where the parents are in total control. Sorry to say that but some come dysfunctional homes and can’t help it. Are those who are well properly coached at home and are well behaved at school have to pay the price? School teachers and principals should KNOW the well behaved students from the violent ones and should deal with them accordingly!!!
Parents who seem to have lost control, wake up and smell the blood being constantly shed in Dominica as a result of violence among the youth. TAKE CONTROL AND DO NOT SOOTIWAY your children. Imagine one parent informing her son’s classmate that he has a bad temper. SMH

This is sad and disappointing, yet another student was involved in a fracas and injured another one. The school authorities along with the Minister of Education must come up with a plan and disciplinary measures to eradicate such occurrences which give Dominica, the schools and the teachers of all a bad name. Such behavior must be curtailed in all schools in Dominica.
The best thing students can do is to stay away from trouble as arguments and run away from them. Do not allow yourselves to be involved in such. It takes two to tangle. I hope the injured student will in time recover.
How far can this student run and hide and for how long? The Police should investigate his family members. Someone or some people are harboring him. Search under their beds and in clothes closets too. I hope he is caught soon.

Firstly, I do not understand our police force. How will the citizens assist in capturing this student on the run if their photo and name is with held? If we look at the news abroad we see that a description is giving on international news to assist in apprehending the criminal. Additionally, some Dominicans love to “suteeweh” criminals. An aiding and abetting laws should be either reviewed if in place and enforced if it’s on the books.

Secondly, this anger among our youth today, their inability to resolve problems without physical assaults harm results from somewhere. My guess is the home. The Government of Dominica has limited resources. It is time for the N.G.O’s to step up. We have a lassez faire attitude which need to be seriously addressed. Our N.G.O’s need to start collecting data in the homes and have community outreach programs to educate and empower our youth. We need to go to the ghettos and middle class homes which suffer serious breakdowns.

Lastly, I believe very strongly it’s the infringement of American culture that has permeated our minds and body that has seriously destroyed us as a people. I urge Dominicans of African descent to visit this site. http://www.africanholocaust.net

When children are bombarded by violence on tv part of the cause n when the cabinopsychologist practise their bravado an force the CEO and ACE0 to micro manage their principals, force principals to take back b4 its expiration suspended students for violent offences and pay lip service to the real issues at school and the list goes on the month is ending let us witness the triumphant of all students who assaulted their teachers. These things will stop when our children realise we are serious as adults and stop confusing them with our double standards. Most important of all its time we start acting and stop talking stating all the answers and solutions without it having any effects because once it leave our lips it hit ears get typed, shelved and thats the end of it

I see that you are a student, so I just wanted to point this out to you. If you read the article it is stated the police officials confirmed that the injured is from Marigot but it goes on to say that other reports are suggesting that the injured is from Concord and DNO is seeking clarification. Take your time to read carefully, it will help in your studies.

Are our children and even teachers safe at our schools.
I propose a convening of a wide cross section of civil society to put an action plan in place to look into such violence. I can smell something very tragic at any time, God forbids.
Increased security officers(though commendable) no matter how many will not prevent these occurances. We seem to be missing somethings that are very important.
Pray that the injury to the boy is not life threatening.
DNO PLEASE KEEP US UP TO DATE. DNO GREAT JOB!
