UWP gravely concerned over spate of murders, rise in violent crimes

The Executive of the United Workers Party has expressed what it described as “very grave concerns” over the recent spate of murders in Dominica.

In a release on Tuesday, the UWP said it is also concerned as well about “the general rise in violent crimes which have been committed across the island within the first six months of this year.”

“While not wanting to apportion blame, this untenable situation has made it extremely necessary to determine where the true causes for that increase lie,” the statement said.

The statement added, “Could this be because of a number of reasons not least among them being:-
1. Weak and ineffective policing
2. Inadequate prosecution services
3. Inadequate forensic capability and or capacity
4. Unemployment and or underemployment
5. A general poor leadership example in adhering to the Rule of Law”

“This situation has significantly affected and is negatively impacting the sense of security of every citizen and visitor in Dominica,” the UWP said. “The Executive questions whether there exists a Policing Plan that is being implemented, which drives the daily operations of the Commonwealth of Dominica Police; if such a Plan does not exist then why not.”

The party is now calling on the government to address the matter urgently.

“In light of the seriousness of the situation, the UWP calls on the Roosevelt Skerrit Led Administration to urgently address the issue, with a view to reinstating the confidence of citizens and that of investors in the economy in their personal and National security,” the statement said.

A total of 13 homicides has been reported on the island so for 2017.

The latest is the death of Glen Alphonse, who was shot and killed in a bus in Eggleston on Wednesday, July 5.

The police are presently seeking two men who they think can assist in their investigations into the matter.

OH stop with the nonsense propaganda! This attempt to make protests (Like ALL people in democracies do) look like a violent incident has already been debunked. 13 people killed, many of them by madmen or no one knows who, and you compare that to a protest and road blocking? How many people died at any darn protest?! This is why the country keeps getting worse…you all are afraid to address the REAL problems even when it is MURDER and just continue to focus on minor things!

Why can’t Lennox and the rest of his team admonish their supporters who use social media to threaten and belittle those who disagree with them? The murders are unfortunate and a bad look, but these double standards are unacceptable.

Lennox and his team should admonish their supporters, while Skerrit himself gets on political platforms ENOURAGING his supporters to engage in name calling? When they boycott people’s busineses? When they haul any and every one to court or get them fired for disagreeing with them? Stop the heightened hypocrisy….rather than say “politics or not lets solve these murders” your focus is on social media comments?! Grow up!

How many of the 13 murders were related to UWP? NONE Not one. You guys seem to live in a special bubble. People are asking the government to address a rise in crime and you dismiss it be saying “there will always be crime”? So why bother with a police force or any semblance of governance altogether. You don’t have to support UWP to say that crime needs to be reduced.

But I get it…you must be so darn ASHAMED that the DLP not addressing it you feel the need to act like its not a problem! Keep accepting mediocrity. Everyone is telling the government they need to do better, but “yes” men and women like you will always excuse their incompetence!

Sorry Sorry Dominica. You won’t hear so you will feel! It was sexual abuse running rampant, even (or especially) the ministers and business men on board. Now that legislation has passed, we don’t get annual sex assault reports anymore.

Now is murder from all angles, in broad daylight, and citizens will again have to BEG and PLEAD their government to take action. The Government will blame the culprits and maybe even proclaim some of their murderers are “real men.” People will cheer until the next victim is their mammy or daddy or son or daughter. When it happens in front of a crowd, but no one sees nothing.

Apparently our “brain drain” — the export of our best and brightest has brought us to this point. We only had 10 murders ALL YEAR in 2016, Halfway thru 2017 and we already reach 13. Why aren’t we asking the police force what will be done to reduce crime? DO we need more police? More investigators? Better training? WHat? Silence from the gov’t as usual!

UWP to happy for that to have another excuse to try and blame the government for it. I personally think UWP is more responsible for all this increase in crime and all the negative things happening in the country. I feel like a fortune teller. I predicted all this and more would happen. Worst is yet to come. Uwp cannot be on radio and else where every day preaching violence and negativity and not expect it to affect especially the youth in negative ways. They are destroying the minds of the youth. We can see how a lot of people are so ignorant and violent now. And Uwp knows damn well that is what they are trying to achieve. Creat disturbance in the country. They cannot beat Labour at the polls so they try to just creat problems and stop anything good from happening in the country. Typical of Uwp’s selfish people that are just interested in themselves and not the country.

From the time that Skerrit made his infamous “No Law not Even the Constitution can Prevent me from being Nominated”, this has dealt a serious blow on the minds of Dominicans who already had a criminal predilection. In fact some people use it as a precursor to committing criminal acts. He recently told his idiots to confront opposition people and even at the cemetery, go to their faces and call them TRAITOR..This came from the mouth of a Prime Minister.ARE YOU SURPRISED FOLKS? I am not!
No wonder allegations are rife that one of his Ministers had a GUN in Parliament? What was the purpose? Was this GUN licensed? How many other members of his team had guns too? Is this leadership?

Growing up in Portsmouth I attended a lot of movies played at the RBD Cinema, and I saw a lot of actors and actresses do strange things . Now to another matter: Remember the June 28 statement of Daniel Carbon about the US authorities investigating guns that arrived in a barrel shipped from the US? But y he made that speech no? Was he sending a message? I mean y he said US authorities sat in his office and he gave them all info he had nou? I mean y he even said the US would soon make an arrest nou? As a US citizen I know that’s not how US authorities opperate and I was even wondering if u think the US didn’t come to investigate the Aliereza Monfared matter, since he was a wanted criminal and was allowed to hide here. Now to the subject.U remember Gravity was charged for 3 murders after he was arrested for one? I hope tomorrow I don’t hear the deceased was the one the US was interested in and he had some info that would open a can of worms. Remember I have seen a lot of movies

    This is all gang related!
If these karwat are in a gang and the members are committing violent crimes, if the police really wants to put an end to gangs in Dominica, they have to arrest every member of the gang for any crime that a gang member commits because they are all accessories to each others crimes. if a man steal a chain, shot a person, rob a store, threaten a person… arrest every known gang member they are all accessories in connection with the rime and let them all have to prove their innocence for every single law any gang member breaks! Do that and you will see how fast violent and petty crime will stop in DA!

Put warrant out for and arrest every single member any time something happen, they will think twice before they pee pee and will understand the country and society does not fear them it is them that have to fear US!

DID YOU DO IT?..The MONAFARED SAGA revealed to us who the real TRAITORS are. That is very interesting coming from a party that incite violence and hatred every day. They even had D Day, DAY OF DEATH.(2, 7, 7 ) Their leader has to pay legal fees for bad behavior. On face book, DNO and Q95 they attack Mothers, women and children nearly every day. Right now they are targeting the PM family especially his first son……Why…..because they are advocates of hatred, violence, resentment and wickedness. They are calling people who have not been convicted, criminals.
The innocent pays for the wicked. All those crimes are caused by the infestation of hate that the UWP are spreading like an epidemic. With their lies and propaganda…. UWP EPIDEMIC OF HATE. I thought you were smarter than that. You UWP’ers are always hitting on the government. We know why you made these comments. You act as if, as the PM he is doing nothing good for D/ca. It eats your heart that Lennox Linton and yourselves tried everything to cause the PM to step down.
You would like to see your Party the ruling government. Therefore, you never miss an opportunity to criticize the PM and to cause nationals to turn against him and his Party.
You have shown you do not utilize the little common sense God gave you. You did not cultivate it and expand it. To blame the PM for these crimes/murders is unfair and wicked. This is due to your mentality.
Some D/cans who resided in other countries did not live a law abiding life. They were imprisoned in other countries and were deported. Some of them are the very ones who commit these crimes/murders.
Therefore, you and your gang, cease blaming the PM for these crimes. One day you will pay for this.

Blaming the government for this? The PM did not pro-create them and made their minds. It is UWP that went about putting this in people’s heads, as your supporters. You overlook each person is an individual, possessing his/her own character and personality traits and that people are responsible for themselves. It is the manner in which they want to live their lives. Absolutely no one should blame the government for the sins/crimes of people.
Some of them may not have as much as completed elementary school.
    Lack discipline; are unruly.
    Too lazy to seek employment.
    Love the leisure life.
Some, from youth, have been taking illegal drugs which dulled their senses and are unemployable.

I am much appalled at how brazen those criminals are allowed to be. I will never stop talk about my experiences the last time I went to visit. when a person makes a report to the police and a whole week passes and no police officer comes to deal with your report what kind of confidence can the community have in the police. when I am told that if the police is told that there are young men smoking weed on the block then they come in droves then tell me how can one give the police any sort of good name? I am an officer working in another island and I know that the police cannot work without information from the public. The police cannot and shout not just be concerned about drug eradication and forget about the other offences being committed on the innocent in society. every report made by every member of society should be take seriously no matter how minor it is, that way you will get the community to build their confidence in the police officers.

  32. My little take
    July 7, 2017

I am neither a uwp, DFP, or DLP but a concerned Dominican. I am greatly concerned with the level of crime in a small place like and what makes me even more concerned, is the fact that the government pays no mind to it, and in many cases they seem to be condoning it, in the name of politics. I mean how could a serious government that is concerned about national security, after being tipped by the US about a barrel of guns on a ship to Dominica, instead of allowing the culprit to clear it at customs so they could be arrested, they through their police running to take it from the port and they and their lawyers running on the radio with it as if to let the culprit (s) no that the US is involved? Instead of arresting someone, they allowed another barrel to come in and same result? This government is reckless and as a private citizens I feel they are doing more to encourage crime than to stop it

  33. July 7, 2017

You want stop the increase in murders in Dominica, then, bring back the death penalty and the gallows and enforce it. Crime is a problem every where in the world. Crimes are big and on the increase in every city in America. The mayors cannot stop it, the governors cannot stop it. People are doing whatever their minds tell them to do on any given day, at anytime. The state I live in, last weekend there were 7 shootings in one of the cities. All died. Everybody goes to jail and are back out after serving 7 or 8 years. The punishment has to suit the crime. Bring back hanging and enforce it.

  34. These concerns are understandable.

Every one of them is an absence of something. Instead of asking why this or why that we should be looking to see what is missing.

Just as darkness is an absence of light:

Hate is an absence of love.

Violence is an absence of charity.

Murder is an absence of kindness.

Anger is an absence of graciousness.

What is missing in the lives of men and women that would fill such an ugly void? It is not WHAT is missing because the lives of people are filled with things and stuff. We should be looking to see WHO is missing. It is JESUS CHRIST. He longs to come in. He wants to be your SAVIOR and FRIEND.

Believe that HE paid the penalty for your sins on he cross and rose again. Invite HIM into your heart.

At the heart*s door the Savior is standing,
At the heart*s door fast closed by sin.
At the heart*s door the Savior is knocking,
Oh, draw back the bolt and let Him in :!:

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill.

What happen to laziness ,greed and drugs?

    • These things will always trouble some individuals, couples, families, and communities. They are part of the human condition. Even Christians face some of these challenges. But Christians have an advantage. Christ is with them to help. As they read the word of God and pray the Holy Spirit gives motivation that overrides the laziness, a contentment that overcomes the greed, and an exuberance that makes the drugs undesirable.

It does not all happen instantaneously. It begins when we receive Christ. It is part of our spiritual growth.
It is the fruit of the Spirit. It is HIS work in our lives.

They are what is called the proximate causes. You have to go even further to distal” causes. That is, ask yourself what causes increases in laziness, greed, and drug use? It is there you will find things like economic despair, the breakdown of national character, stress, and social alienation. And all these things have been shown related to the economic, political, and social climate created by a country’s political and thought leaders.

Come On UWP!! Is Dominica for all ah we? Why do we have to introduce politics in every event in Dominica. I think the issue is sufficiently serious when a country looses 0.02% of its population in six months as homicides. Come on UWP show some leadership and knock heads with the ruling party to put an end to this scourge on the Dominica populace. If the government fails to be cooperative, then come up with a workable strategy to arrest this disease of our community. After all we still need to sound your desire for Dominica to make it the best place to live, to work and to enjoy life. Surely, that dream can not be realised if we continue to lose 0.02% of our population in the first six months of the year. Just to clarify my maths Population of Dominica is 65,000; 13 murders since the beginning of 2017. (13/65000) x 100 = 0.02%.

I am giving to U some thing that will either short U up or make U speak louder, U remember the FIRE of CHRISTMAS MORNING 2010 at St. AROMANT at the home of the EMMANUEL’S where they burn part of his house and his car, and saying that it’s himself who burn the house, a man came forward and testify saying he is the one who burn the house and the car, Your god’s and them said that he is mad so his statement is not CREDIBLE, but they accept the one from GRAVITY,
One thing I am saying one of those days JUSTICE will prevail, because PROVERBS chapter 15 and verse 3 said the EYES of the LORD ARE IN EVERY PLACE beholding the EVIL and the GOOD
So those scoundrels that have the AUTHORITY to do those things will certainly pay for it when the time is right, put that in UR. PIPE and SMOKE it, who LAUGH last LAUGH the BEST

@Winston Warrington….Can you reread the blame section of UWP posting….”a general poor leadership example in adhering to the rule of law”….#5. Is that not what ” the police cannot tell us what to do” advocates. The UWP has a record for actions to prevent the maintenance of law and order. The 13 killings have to be as a result of their prompting.

Better question, why should UWP or any political party have to ask questions or provide solutions when the chief of police, minister of security, and prime minister are the individuals being paid to address crime, and inform the public of what’s going on.

Perhaps the BIGGEST crime here is that individuals are too afraid or ignorant to question people responsible for certain activities on island. I suppose it will take some of these crimes hitting close to home before some people wake up, and demand better, regardless of political party!

The Government needs a serious approach to solving and preventing crime. There must be a zero tolerance approach to crime and violence. Every sector of our society must be included in this fight yo get rid of this enemy in our society.

Just want the DLP to note that using a well known criminal to promote their campaign is not only bad news for blue but is bad news for Dominica.
