Venezuelan fined for illegal entry; deportation ordered

court1A Venezuelan, Simon Gomez who entered Dominica illegally, has been fined EC$1,000 forthwith after which he is to be deported to his homeland.

However his deportation will be at the expense of the state since he told the police that he has “no money and or travel documents and came to Dominica to work.”

Reports are that on November 14 the police had gone to the home of another Venezuelan to execute a search warrant and found Gomez there.

When questioned, Gomez gave his correct name but told police that he was from Guyana and he had entered Dominica a few weeks ago via a fishing boat.

His lawyer, Wayne Norde, begged the court not to impose a custodial sentence on his client since “he did not even have a dollar to buy water.”

The maximum penalty is EC$5,000 or one year jail. Magistrate Ossie Lewis said he had to send a clear message to persons wanting to enter Dominica that they should do so via “legal means”.

He was slapped with the $1,000 fine and was ordered to be deported.

it cost more to deport him than the $1000 fine. THe least the magistrate could do was fine him the amount it would cost to be deported

The person he was working with can easily pay the amount. That’s chicken feed for them.

Being illegal in a country is what Dominicans do. I know the law is the law, but we must pick our battles. Don’t you think the USa and Canada and other Caribbean Countries know of the Illegal Dominicans? They do, but they don’t go looking unless a crime is committed.

Law is law, but illegal immigrants work hard. Every dominican has a relative in USA “bossing there tail” illegally.

What if USA would deport them all?

We need to pick our battles…

It is about time the Dominican government , and the immigration department do there job, and get the lead of there gludiusmaximus, this man is not the only one in Dominica illegally, the Haitians the Dominican republican, chines, the true Dominicans are an endangers species, pretty soon there wont be any real, or true Dominicans. every other country in the world send those illegals back to there home country, why cant we do the same,D.A. is a small country why cant we track them down, after they over stay there welcome?, create a task force with the new police officers I saw walking around Roseau four in a group without a senior officer to guide them they look like they dont have clue of what to do. have them go find those illegals, and send them back to there home country.
