UPDATE: Five arrested in drug bust; Vincentian hospitalized

Dominica police confirmed Friday that they had arrested five men, including a Vincentian national who was hospitalized because of injuries he sustained during an anti-drugs operation mounted by the police.

The arrests were made by members of the island’s Drugs Squad who intercepted a Mitsubishi bus in the Scottshead area at 2am Friday morning.

Police say the bus belongs to a Bath Estate man and was being driven by an individual from the same address.

Police spokesman Kenth Matthew said the driver, another Bath Estate man and the Vincentian had in their possession at the time of capture, 10,000 grams of cured marijuana.

A Kings Hill man riding a motorcycle was also detained.

Matthew says the bus, motorcycle and a small boat that was also involved in the activity were confiscated.

The individual from Portsmouth who was at the helm of the open-keel boat was among those arrested.

Hey Rebel, indeed you’ve asked some fear questions. And that’s because these things are blatant and in our face and marijuana related. Just ask about what happened to the fella at Grand Coulibri a few months ago, and you’ll also find the obvious answer to what you still pondering about Dominica police.

I wish everyone can say good job to the police, it seem the weed alone the police see, they get gun’s illegal and these, what happen? NO Public display of guns taken out of commission!! What they’re doing with this guns that they keep finding? They get cocaine and they show public display of them burning “cocaine” with dusk mask… I think 1. they not burning cocaine with dusk mask or 2. if they burning cocaine, we or Dominica police force have some occasional coke-head

In all that fiasco; all that transportation of weed, Mitsubishi bus, guy on bike, boat intercepted, you mean there were no firearms involved?…No firearms were confiscated?….wow….hmm….that’s good…The Police did a good job, and should be commended…

Am implying that the Police confiscate illegal firearms without reporting them?; no,….far from it. The Police should be trustworthy and honest and respectful individuals…hopefully….But are they?.
Well, I will say, that the vast majority of them are…and I will leave it at that.

I am only raising these questions, because, nowhere in the report, or article(what was reported), did I read where any guns were taken. Nor did I read where there were an exchange of gunfire, yet, word is that the Vincentian, was wounded as a result of gunshot,or shots that he sustained…Is this true?.
Under what circumstances did he get injured?…I have no way of verifying,…I am just asking…

We have “journalists in this Country, who do not follow up on “breaking news”,and do not give followups on developing stories..no going to the scene, no investigating,no asking critical questions, no “nothing”. We just halfheartedly report something and leave it at that….I am not accusing all,of this behavior, but generally speaking, that is how they operate.

The report( which I read in this article) said, that “he was hospitalized as a result of injuries he sustained during an anti-drugs operation”……. What were the nature of those injuries?…How did he sustained those injuries?,….was he the only one injured, was he the only one who put up a struggle, or resisted?.

Only those at the scene would know that, and, upon a complete investigation, I am sure,or, do hope, all the facts will be brought to light…

Now, that leads to my second question…As a result of the “word on the street”;….Of course; because, it is not everything you hear, or read about, that you should believe…You must exercise some form of skepticism;…I know that, and you should as well;…but…
the question(s) must ask anyway….Is there a “Death-squad” within the Police Force of Dominica?, are there a few rogue Cops?..Does the Police kill civilians,or rather, suspects, under suspicious or dubious circumstances?…If so, how can they get away with that….
I find this hard to believe, don’t you?.

The Police have no right to brutalize, or kill suspects.Period…Indiscriminately,or otherwise…They are only suppose to use deadly force, when their own life,or the life of someone else is in danger.
Every suspect,or suspects, must be accorded “due process” under the Law…Irrespective of how heinous the crime,or crimes, he, or she, is alleged to have committed are….That is the Law, and the system, under which we operate, and live…”the presumption of innocence until proven guilty”….

They, the Police, must operate under the conformity of the Law and The Constitution…no exceptions…No individual or individuals, is, or, are, above the Law. An if anyone breached the Law, then, he/she, has to be brought to justice.

Remember, I am only asking the question(s)…because of the “word on the street”, and as a result of conversations that I’ve had with a few people….I am not stating this as a matter of fact; I have no concrete proof, of this shocking, and illegal behavior…but I have a right to ask nonetheless.

And as you may well know,or are aware of….a few unsolved execution style killings, and the disappearance of a few individuals in our society; some were never found; some were found. Even if those individuals were of questionable character, they were Citizen, the were Human Beings; therefore, they had certain inalienable Rights. But yet, there were no known inquiries, or investigations into their deaths;…over the last year,or two;…to even now…Why?….most recently….last week….I don’t have to mention any names…..For as I have stated; those are just allegations…..But those allegations,or circumstances, beg for some questions anyway…..

We do not have ballistics in Dominica, so there is no way to match bullets to any particular firearms…
And, how many ‘Medical Examiners do we have?…How about Pathologists..do we have any?…….Are we able to get an independent medical report, that differs from that of the Police,or Govt.?…These are fair questions, don’t you think?.

We sure seem to have a heck of a lot of fire power(Handguns;firearms) in Dominica…some, if not most, are illegal, and are in the wrong hands…..Where did they coming from, and how did they get on Island?….
Where are the confiscated ones going to?…why are some being circulated back on the “streets”…. And, are there any ‘LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL” with “illegal firearms”?, or do they have access to them…If so,why?, and how did they obtain those firearms?.

Hope we can get credible and accurate answers to these legitimate questions….
In the mean time, we watch, and wait……

I am only stating some concerns that some Citizens, as well as I, have.

Profound Peace…and…All the very best to all.

    REBEL!!!.

another bust for the police force…what I’m trying to figure out is how did the cops know that the weed was in transit along the coast? Why was that bus of alllllll the buses in the island the most suspicious looking one? If that be the case…why weren’t other buses stopped and searched that night? Oh and 22 pounds…really? That could be a fraction of the real amount seized(I’m just saying). We’ll never know thanks to the media and the little information provided by those who were really on the scene.

On another note…Dominicans love to smoke weed.we all know it. If you don’t, no offense taken. It is by choice weather or not if one condones it. However, just by reading the comments left by the ignoramus, it is quite evident that that people really hate or fear what they don’t understand nor experienced. For those who don’t understand the difference between a drug and a herb…GOOGLE IT. You wanna learn the history of marijuana and how it became criminalized by the Feds?….YOUTUBE IT!>Its 10 parts long. Educate yourselves people! Stop using the internet to blog negatively about people’s opinion on what they hardly know about. Think outside of the box…think outside of what the media feeds you.

I think that marijuana need to be researched and utilized as a medicine in Dominica. People, one cannot put marijuana, alcohol and cocaine on the same level. Marijuana only became illegal in the 20th century for political reasons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marijuana.

It is so amazing that our law enforcement agencies are so swift in catching marijuana peddlers however, they are sluggish in catching bandits and robbers.

Additionally, I am not a marijuana smoker but could anyone name me one person who has died from smoking marijuana? What has marijuana done to a populace in comparison to the millions of lives taken by tobacco and alcohol, yet, these dangerous drugs are legalized. Why are the Dominican bloggers on here make unintelligent comments? http://cannabislink.ca/medical/harmful.html

Another case in point, there was an Eco-store opposite Valentines on Great George Street some years ago . In it there were clothing which were made of hemp. There were bags, dress pants and shirts etc. If this is so, why the hypocrisy regarding the plant? Why not cultivate the herbs and establish a factory so that we can make ropes, clothes, medicine and other secondary produce so that our youth can be gainfully employed? Why are so many of our people behave like illiterates?

Moreover, there are states in the US, Canada and well as Europe where marijuana has been legalized for medicinal purposes. I think since we have the land, why not use it, do our scientific research into the plant then use it for our benefits, cut our importation bill in pharmaceutical drugs which have serious side effects and are harmful in the long run. Some of these drugs are used as placebo for scientific experiments. Why would we stop being the Imperial guinea pigs? http://cannabislink.ca/medical/#medinfosites

In conclusion, my assessment is the good in marijuana outweigh any perceived harms thus we need to educate our populace on its usage and benefits it can have on our nation. Thanks. :-D

hey its only 10 kilos of weed man, i see some of you all celebrating like is a tonne is weed lol. this was probably grown in a man’s backyard. while some see this as a good job by the police i see it as a waste of needed resources. imagine the thousands of dollars that were expended to recoup those 22 lbs of weed and what it will cost to bring this to court and what it will cost to feed the six arrested while on remand. at market price those 22lbs of weed is worth less than a thousand dollars per pound or below 22,000 dollars. i am sure it cost more than that for the government to capture, bring to trial and subsequent jail the arrested. Imagine a scenario where weed is a legal entity just as tobacco and alcohol( including home made wine and other liquors)where those who want to produce for public consumpstion must meet certain minimum standards ( controlled by bureau of standards) and the requisite taxes which would be levied by government. these taxes are multi layered paid by the consumer of the product as well as the fact that the whole production machinery( farms, seeds, labour, packaging and transport) will themselves be part of the formal economy they would subject to taxes etc and by themselves will be sources of income and employment.
I mean that it is only prudent that as we move forward on our development path that we consider innovative means of achieving and paying for that development that we seek. new and high value jobs can be created by added value to a new list of crops, marijuana being one them, where we stop the simple exportation of raw fruit( a model from since colonial times) in exchange for a hybrid model where certain levels of processing and value adding to boost both exports and local consumption.

lets see how long it takes for people to realise that as island without resources you need to maximise of your intrinsic advantages, dont see weed as a problem but see it as one of the vehicle to kick start something positive.

Let us praise the police for the bust. We must however remain cautious because evidence have a way of disappearing. Also the paste at which the court system is working is most times a hindrance to justice.

I would like to see these drug dealers taken away from our children and I often wonder why is it that we are not having much more arrest of the retailers . After in every community the people and police know who the drug dealers are and if we really want these leeches it just so easy. I’ve heard all kinds of excuses why those drug dealers cannot be arrested and every time I d hear those excuses I laugh. I became even more disappointed when I found out the there was a perched unit on the 6 floor monitoring crime and responsible for national security. That perched unit seem to be serving one purpose only.

…..it it is not made legal for the purpose of satisfying a few individuals then the so called drug squad should not waste time going after marijuana dealers……..alcohol was illegal once in the US…..this is how numerous well known families in America became rich….by bootlegging alcohol into the US…..we can all look up the effects of marijuana on the body…and it as bad as alcohol or any other drugs out there….that drug game is a terrible thing…

Hey leave the herb that grade was excellent for the healing of dominica period, why do we pretend so much….why do Americans think so well and Europoeans do as well…all because of the healing for the nation..

If Dominica de-crimminilise the herb we would be a much better and focus society whereby our Proffessional folks by using the higher grade would think much better and for medical issues would bring about a sense of pride which lack big time in the dominican society!

Good Job Carrette and Officers. Ninety-nine days for the drugman, but one day the police will have his day. Keep the pressure up. Weed out all the drug pushers and the enablers from our beautiful country. I’m fed up with these low-lying and bastard criminals. Its time we take back the streets from these wicked criminals, so that our children can have peace.

hey fool,u can never destroy marijuana…why? because its a natural plant put on earth by the Almighty Creator himself to servea purpose to man as written in genesis…all the green herbs for the use of man!so how on earth do u think dem punks gona put out a plant dat has abundance of seeds in the earth just waitin to spring up on its own without a MAN planting it? time u ppl start accepting reality and reallystart loving the Almighty Creator and learn to trust in his infinite wisdom and stop trusting allu own foolishness.the world wud be a better place!!ganja fi legal i say bcuz God made it first legal!!! Fight against the natural you fight against HIM!

      • Justice and Truth
        January 7, 2012

        @ Naturalmysti

God made it but some human beings abuse it as in many other cases. Abuse of any nature is a sin. In this case, it is a crime to grow it for personal gain, to get rich. It also destroys lives. Many people have lost their wives, family, jobs and houses due to taking drugs. Some have murdered family members because they are on such drugs.
Let us also look at it in this fair manner. Every one who receives money and exorbitant sums from selling it must report it to the government and pay their fair share of revenue. It is not fair to employers, employees who are paying their fair share of taxes. Some of them may be dealing in drugs while they also collect social welfare assistance from the government, paid for by taxpayers.
If legalized they will never be honest. The government will have to monitor, employing others to oversee every aspect of the plant while growing, when reaped and sold. Do you think that will be feasible?

      • Informant
        January 7, 2012

So I guess you should go use all those poisonous plants and fruits around as well. The point is it’s use whether personal or for trafficking is illegal and our people should not engage in it.
