Woodford Hill man jailed for stealing priest’s TV

The TV stolen by Anthony
The TV stolen by Anthony

A Woodford Hill man, Clement Anthony, has been jailed after he pleaded guilty to stealing a 60-inch TV belonging to Fr. Rodney Olive from the Holy Redeemer Retreat House.

The incident occurred on December 8.

According to court reports, Anthony stole the TV, destroyed a door lock and also stole grocery items at the retreat house located in Eggleston.

The LG TV is valued at EC$6,546.00

A report was made to police about the burglary and at about 7:00 pm on that same day, Anthony was seen by police in Bath Road carrying the TV on his head and was arrested.

Before sentencing, acting Chief Magistrate, Candia Carette-George told him, “what went in your head…to go so far at the Retreat House in Eggleston… I am going to put you away for a while to reflect. You alone carried that TV and we need three police officers to now carry it.”

He was jailed for four months for theft of groceries, three months for malicious damage and slapped with a two-year jail sentence for stealing the TV.

He received no separate penalty for giving the police a false name.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

The TV was partly damaged. However, it is said to be in working condition and was returned to the priest, who was in court.

The priest should shake his gown over his face, and reduce him from a river to a stream,or give him leemya[bamboglate].

DNO, you’re making it seem like the TV belongs to the priest. It belongs to the HRRH which the priest is in charge of. When people go on retreats the TV is used for videos, presentations etc. and people talking about collection money, Retreat house is not run by collection money. People donate to the retreat house and it is run by the money ppl pay to have retreats there.

Personally, I find it discusting that somebody would steal a T.V. (or anything else for that matter) from Holy Redeemer Retreat House.

A number of DNO commentators have written as if the priest should not have reported the theft to the police or laid charges. Please consider the following.

    (1) Not to report the theft would mean there would be a thief out there on the loose. He would likely do it again. Your home or business may be next.

    (2) To say it should not be reported to the police
would mean no church organization or religious property has any legal protection. Everything would be wide open to anybody who decided to walk in and help themselves.

    (3) Where the money came from to purchase the
T.V. is not an issue. If it was puchased from church collections or donations given to the Retreat House it is probably owned by the Retreat House. A Retreat House does have a right to buy a T.V. or any other piece of furniture its directors wish. It is not public property. Nobody has a right to walk off with it! If the priest bought it out of his own funds the same holds true.

    (4) Once it is reported to the police they must investigate and lay charges if they have grounds. It is how they keep the community safe.

    (5) I expect the priest has forgiven the offender. He has probably prayed for him. But to keep your community safe the wheels of justice must turn. This is called due process. It has nothing to do with whether or not the priest forgives the offender.

    (6) God has given to the government and the police the delegated authority (on HIS hehalf) to make and enforce laws for the protection of us all. You will find this in your Bible in Romans 13:1-4. We are to obey these laws and co-operate with those who enforce them. This is the system God has put in place. Christians know they are to forgive. But without the system law breakers would not be brought to justice and would have no incentive to change.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

“Sick people” don’t get treated in Dominica? The man must be sick in his clock to steal a TV and then carry it in the open. He needs help and should not be in jail.

What de priest doing with “flat screen TV? He watching Soap?

    • December 11, 2013

It is nobody’s business what the priest watches.

I’m an evangelist and I watch T.V., :-D even a little Catholic programing! There are things on Canadian and American T.V. no Christian and certainly no chuch leader should watch. But it is a personal matter. The priest probably picks and chooses his programs the same as I do.

Remember the T.V. was for people spending time at the Retreat House. Priests and others in the religious life sometimes carry a heavy load. They are like everybody else and must have their times of rest and relaxation. Retreats are not only for prayer, meditation, and study. 8) There are times to unwind.

So to all of you who are out of joint  because the priest or Retreat House has a 60 inch T.V. I say CHILL!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. :-P Pentecostal Evangelist.

Thief! To steal from the priest. Shame on you! It is similar to stealing from the poor. He should also have been charged for giving the police a false name for it is a crime to do so. Three or four years would have been appropriate.
In prison, these people should be rehabilitated. When he is released from prison he may continue plying this criminal trade, if not worse.

The only part of the sentencing that makes sense is that he got a two year jail sentence. What’s the use of the other two if they are to run concurrently? Should we be interested in the number of sentences or the number of penalties. Sentences should run consecutively otherwise they serve no USEFUL purpose.

What compensation does the priest get for the damage to his TV? While the TV is in working condition, because it is damaged, it is no longer of the same value as before it was tampered with. Thieves should be made to pay handsome damages to their victims so they can be deterred from their abusive their behaviour. The court should also consider the psychological damage of the break-in to the victim.

And please stop pardoning burglars by releasing them at Christmas time this is a STUPID practice that should never have occurred in the first place. Just think how a Mercy Committee of intelligent people can be senseless.

Why couldn’t the priest just forgive him? Isn’t that the “Christian” thing to do? Why have the man charged when it is the parishioners money that buys the TV’s, alcohol and groceries that fill the Retreat House. The priest is the hypocrite in this story. Religion has been used from the beginning of time to keep the weak minded ignorant.

    • Ben Dover
      December 10, 2013

I am sure the priest forgave him but the law must take its course. Once a report is made to the police they have a right to take it to court when the person is arrested. I don’t think any judge will let the man walk. Stop being small minded.

      December 10, 2013

He stole the TV. The stealth was reported. Did someone not state that it did not belong to the priest but to HRRH(?). Bad also he was caught with it on his head. The Law had to take its course and to deal appropriately with him. He should get more time.

    hahaha. Well, here goes….
    1) Why the priest has to have a 60 inch tv worth so much eh? I know people will say whatever but gosh….most people can’t afford this..I mean, too much glamour for people that take vow of poverty; especially when there is call for so much money needed to do this and that at different churches.
    2) How could you go so far to steal without means of transportation?
    3) How can you have the audacity to walk around with a huge tv like that on your head..no packaging …just walking…you thought if you passed on the road with it..then people will not think is steal you steal it?
    4) What sort of sentencing is that…I know of rape cases where people got less than that…I am only comparing..I am sure the judge was within the limits.
    5) Is there no ‘limier portcham’ again? I mean, I grew up when people were afraid that priests would shake their garments on them….guess we get too smart now or don’t care one thing.
    Thanks

And to add more to ur comment, Fr. Rodney Olive is the care taker of the retreat home, at the home there are many events taking place up there, group prayers, marriage encounter among others. When there is a large group of people gathered there, a large screen is required

@Ben that is all well and good, but in a country where poverty is rife and lacking in adequate living conditions for many i do not see the need for there to be a 60in television in a retreat no matter what excuses are given for the reason it’s there. You do not need a tv that size to watch presentations on..it is absolutely absurd and just a sorry excuse.
