A man from Yam Piece was sentenced on Friday morning after he pleaded guilty for the possession of a 12-gauge shotgun and cocaine.
Ike Daniel, 30, was slapped with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to supply, possession of a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition.
He was arrested in the community on Friday at around 4:30 am.
According to police prosecutor, Sergeant Constance Cuffy, on Friday morning the police went to Daniel’s home armed with a search warrant.
During the search a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, with two rounds of ammunition, was found in a mattress.
The search continued and 44 packages of a substance wrapped in aluminum foil were found in a plastic bag.
Daniel admitted to police the substance was cocaine.
The illegal drug weighed a total of 41 grams with a street value of $1,107.
The police also found $494.30 was found in a box in Daniel’s bedroom.
When question Daniel said he had just returned from Guadeloupe and had just changed some money.
However, he could not produce a receipt to back up his explanation.
The police theorized the money was derived from the sale of cocaine.
Daniel’s attorney, Joshua Francis, told the court that his client was remorseful and has accepted responsibility for his actions.
Francis stated that Daniel’s girlfriend has a baby on the way and should be given a chance to support them both.
Magistrate, Bernard Pacquette, told Daniel he should take stock of his life and pointed out to him that possession of guns and cocaine was illegal.
For possession of cocaine with intent to supply, Daniel was fined $10,000.
$5,000 must be paid immediately or six month in prison.
The other $5,000 is expected to be paid by January 4, 2015 or six months behind bars.
There was no separate fine for the possession of cocaine
For the possession of ammunition he was fined $5,000 payable by March 4, 2015 or six months in prison
For possession of firearm, he was sentenced to six months at hard labor, suspended for one year.
A man who has been charged in the past with murder? Am I reading this right? Oh, he didn’t do it! He let somebody else use his gun.
Now he is guilty of a gun and cocaine offence. According to this read he seems to have avoided jail because he must support the baby. It is doubtful if a baby should be raised in a home like that. A father with gun and drug convictions and a mother foolish enough to pair up with him do not provide a good nest for a little one.

I comment on this story in Dominica because it is identical to situations that happen again and again in Canada so I am addressing Canadians as well.
Illegal drugs and guns are so often found together they
seem to go together like a horse and carriage. If we want a safe country we must clamp down on both these things.
Marijuana is an entry drug. People often use it first because it is considered a soft drug. But it is human nature to experiment and seek a better high so they kick things up a notch. The worst mistake any country could make in this regard is to decriminalize or legalize marijuana.
I am always concerned when I see the use of cocaine. Here in Canada we have seen the damage it does to the personality, and not only with young people. Cocaine does more than give you a high! Over time (and not too long a time) it messes up the brain and alters the behavior. We have seen hard working successful family men take on the characteristics of hardened criminals and commit murder in
a year or two. People say it was out of character. But they do not know drugs. This is especially true of crack.
The justice system should take drugs very seriously and send out the right message.
Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.
Oh my Dominica is a runaway country. No law,God help us all.
Dominica, your court system is unbelievable. That’s the place to be for criminals. They are encouraging this type of behavior in your communities. I think it’s time that your people stand up or else you will be sorry souls.
So you see how it goes with the court system in Dominica, an unlicensed firearm and the possession of cocaine and he gets just a slap in the face for such stuff as compared to an individual being fined so “HARSH” for the equivalent amount or even less of marijuana , it was not study materials that he had to get him thro at college bearing in mind that he’s expecting a new born if so the case.
Lets see how much Mr. A. George will get when his case is called !!
Where did he get the gun? Is it one that could have been stolen?
His lawyer says his girlfriend is expecting a baby and he has to support her. This is a senseless defense. There is not one judge/magistrate who would be interested in hearing this. At least he did not say that he cooperated with the Court, a statement which I find is rather foolish for sensible lawyers to make. I heard they are allowed to state this. It should be struck out of the records. Criminals have the obligation to cooperate with the Court. They found themselves in that situation.
He committed a crime by having an unlicensed gun and was found with cocaine and money from the proceeds of crime .
If he had to use the gun on someone or a few people he would. What other reasons for having a gun and with an illegal substance could he use at his trial?.
When the child is born, under this condition, w ill the parents be capable of properly caring for the child? This may warrant a visit or more from the Social Welfare Department.

What kind of representation are the lawyers paid for anyway? You all are better off going to Court WITHOUT a lawyer.
Cocaine 41 grams, street value $1,107, fine $10,000.
Yesterday a man was released, on a $55,000 bail for a manslaughter charge, to go wherever until September. I know these are separate cases; however, manslaughter vs cocaine – manslaughter has preference. On the other hand, there are lessons to be learned. Seek alternate ways to support your families.
so why is he on the street well Dominica spoil
Drug business is good for the legal system, hope it continues.
Is that the same guy from Bath Estate who served time for the murder of some lady in the country side only to be released a few years later???
This is the very same guy!!! Prison didn’t change you! I’m so sick of lawyers talking about criminals being remorseful when we know better! He should have been jailed! He is not even out long, don’t we have parole regulations in this country?
We don’t know, please enlighten us if you may.
Bath Estate yes it the same guy my dear cousin he was innocent in that case the gun was his but he wasn’t the one who did the killing hence the reason for being back out. i would think by now after spending so many years behind bars he would have learned but i was wrong. i will keep praying for my cousin cause only with god intervention will e see the damage and hurt his action is causing not only to himself but to all who love him.
