Young man at a village feast gets in trouble

A young man is has been ordered to pay $1,500 to the court and $1,500 in compensation by December 31 or in default spend 16 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to wounding.

23-year-old Delbert Cuffy of Canefield was accused of wounding Jeremiah Lockhart over the weekend.

According to Police Prosecutor Inspector Claude Weekes the incident occurred during a village feast in Castle Bruce.

Weekes told the court that Lockhart was with his peers and speaking to his mother when Cuffy sneaked up from behind him and stabbed him twice in the rib area.

The defendant then fled the scene and was later arrested by police officers.  “After them man burst my partner face, a fella I know come up in my face and start behaving wild so I prick him two times with my scissors,” Cuffy said to the arresting officers in explaining his behavior.

Cuffy told the court on Monday morning that he was sorry for his action. “I thought he was involved in the situation with my partner. I am sorry for what I do,” he stated.

Magistrate Baptiste warned the young man about his behavior and told him that his friend should let the police deal with his problems. “We do not practice law of the jungle here. If your friend got a burst head he has another recourse. That kind of behavior is for the zoo! It is for animals!” she exclaimed.

She added, “Violence is not the answer to all questions. The offense for wounding is a very serious one and carries a penalty of five years imprisonment.”

Cuffy was warned never to reappear in court and to be on good behavior.

During manoe days these things yes could have happened but someone would have been in jail. This pressure falls on the prosecution to present a case to the court that will guide the magistrate to a proper form of punishment. weekes needs to toughen up. I worked with him, bring back thoses days in the cid and drugs squad.

So the police are aware that scissors have become standard apparel, standard jewelry for young men? and not doing anything about it? “Officer ..is to cut my weed” hmmm, smh

    Oh brother :( !
Why oh why should a young man go to a feast with a scissors? I strongly advise the parents of the offender to make peace with the family of the injured because CBruce people will not forget and there may be some repercussions later. The court can only do so much but knowing the Lockharts I highly recommend that a peaceful settlement be negotiated before its too late.

However, we as a people must not forget that this is just the tip of the iceburg. Why are our youths so violent? Why is society (Courts) so accommodating but handing such nonsensical sentences? When is this going to end? We obviously need a well thought out crime fighting strategy with professional input from sociologists, psychologists, religious leaders and the criminal justice system. CALLING DR. PETER ST. JEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Assertive, NOT Agressive!

As the saying the man is ‘off his rocker’, a mad man, to do something like that to one who did nothing to him. He thinks it is a joke to stab and injure someone. What will he not do next?
Fortunate for him, he was not stabbed on the left side. The weapon could have penetrated his heart and fatally wounded him.
He said that he is sorry. He should apologize directly to the man whom he injured and hope he would be sincere about it.
It is shocking that after they premeditated their crimes, they say that they are sorry. Sorry does not help when one is injured. Premeditated crimes are serious ones.
Aside from paying the $3,000, should he have that kind of money, will he merely be free to walk the streets? This man should be in prison and rehabilitation.

The magistrate should not have compared the behavior of this hooligan to animals in a zoo. These animals are better behaved that him. After they commit their crime they feel proud to tell the police what they did. That guy should be jailed.

Pray for this guy that he does not kill someone the next time. Clearly, he had malicious intent. This is not self-defense. He should thank God that he got away with such a light sentence. Here in the USA, it is clearly attempted murder with a deadly weapon he would be charged with. God bless DA. I believe in second chances but he needed a much stiffer sentence. What about community service? cleanup Roseau or help clean up PMH?

Same in Canada. This is a serious offence, assault and injuring with a weapon. He could have murdered him. He would not get off so easily, not merely with a fine even though he has to pay an exorbitant sum of money. He would have been imprisoned and probably would still have to pay a fine.

Our justice system needs revision. There needs to be a special kind of punishment for jackasses! First of all, you leave Canefield, go to a feast in Castle Bruce where people are enjoying themselves, walk with a scissors, behave like an idiot and then come to court and say you sorry! You almost kill the boy because you think he was involved in an altercation with your partner!! Not even you! Your partner!! They should jail your sorry self! Idiot!!!

Can you believe he only has to pay the poor guy $1500.00 and another $1500 to the court. This magistrate crazy. He should be in prison all now, he almost killed the guy. The system is a joke.

Does he have that amount of money, $3,000? Who will give or lend it to him? He may have to be imprisoned. The magistrate said, it is five years for such a crime. He should be imprisoned no less than the minimum of 5 years and more for injuring that man. He could have fatally wounded him.

“A young man is has been ordered to pay $1,500 to the court and $1,500” Like are you serious? This is attempted murder and that is the charges… boy what the hell is wrong with this place call Dominica. So someone have to kill someone to go to jail… oh i forget even when they kill they do not go to jail. Dominica can do better than that. This is why the place getting so infested with crime… continue on… in the next 10-15 years people will not be able to walk on the streets…

keep fining people for heinous crimes….is money the government want it seems like..sending him to jail is not going to rehabilitate him……but there are people who don’t want to be rehabilitated and they should suffer the consequence for their actions………

for those who want to be rehabilitated there should be programs in the prison to encourage that….because sending a criminal to jail might result in a worst one at the end of his sentence

You know, Tiny, there are radicals and others who may commit crimes or who are familiar with this criminal this is why they will give you thumbs down. When they do not want/like to hear the truth, this is what they do. You know, ‘the truth offends.’ Just ignore them.

Baptiste should have given that little hooligan 3 years imprisonment. What are you doing at a public event with a pair of scissors? That goes to intent right there. He set off looking for trouble and had it not been this young man it would have been someone else possibly dead. Further he’s cold and calculating to attack the boy in the presence of his mother, I would beat that to a pulp then let police drag his arse to a cell. Seriously these young men need to be dealt with swiftly and harshly. The young boy should sue him and force him to find lucrative work to do while he enjoys every paycheck.

But mister is a mad young fellow. He was not involved in the first incident but he took the case for himself and stabbed a young man twice with a scissors? What is he doing with a scissors in a village feast in the first place? Is he a barber and was going to someone’s house to do a “job”? He could’ve killed that young man and he only gets away with a mere $1,500 fine for a punishment which carries a five year jail sentence?

i think the magistrate is related to the accused because there is no way someone with good sense in their head would not see this as attempted murder. i got so mad reading this article eh.. Dominica going down to the gutter with a law system like this.

  30. August 20, 2012

now i believe dominica have some crazy laws . this is attempted murder.now if this young man did die would his friend go to jail for him? or is his friend going to help him pay the fine?
