A colourful Market Day With a Difference planned for Saturday, Oct. 30

Residents of Roseau and environs can look forward to an exciting and colourful day this Saturday 30th October 2010 at the New Roseau Market as Dominica observes Market Day With a Difference.

Observed on the last Saturday in October in Roseau, Market Day With a Difference is designed primarily to highlight the farmers and vendors contributions to the national development effort.

Unlike previous years, on Saturday a number of farmers and vendors will be recognized and awarded for their outstanding contributions and opportunities created through the production and distribution of food over the years.  Superintendent of the NRM Julius Carbon says the awards will cover a wide range of activities and operations at the Market including the vending of vegetables, citrus, root crops, meats, craft, flowers, shops, booths and snacketts.

Additionally, and in keeping with the renewed emphasis on farmers and vendors, government officials and invited guests are expected to spend more time on the guided tour of the market.

The official ceremony to observe Market Day With A Difference will begin at 8:00am in the covered section of the Market along Laing Lane.  A number of government officials including the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Minister of Trade Dr. Collin McIntyre and Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Central Constituency Hon Norris Prevost, and are expected to deliver brief addresses.

Cultural performances by the Grandfond Children’s Cultural Group will entertain patrons throughout the day.

Come and join us as we celebrate Market Day with a Difference and Dominica’s 32nd Anniversary of Independence.

I am a regular visitor to the market and think that the vast choice of home grown produce is
    brilliant.

Yes the GOVT should help the farmers more. Help!!!! but not hold their hands.

There seems to be a culture of ‘baby sitting’ in Dominica. Everyone wants the GOVT to help their cause.

Perhaps the public should be poled on which field needs more help. Farming or tourism.

As much as tourism would help bring the country into the 21st century, I feel that in the case of Dominica we should stick to what we know best, which is farming, as the powers that be no jack squart about tourism and tourist needs.

Could someone frankly convince Dominicans what would be the difference? The Market will be colourful with cloth, with Madras cloth and Wob Dwiyet. Only when this Govt. seriously recognizes that Agriculture must be the BACKBONE of our ECONOMY, will we see any difference. Dominica would move forward when more lucrative investments are put into AGRICULTURE, instead of the piecemeal, don’t-care attitude.

What is happening with ORGANICALLY grown food? Dominica needs urgently a GOVT., a Minister and Ministry of Agriculture that understand the importance of Agriculture as a necessary PILLAR for ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT. The DIFFERENCE would lie in increased FOOD PRODUCTION, FOOD PROCESSING to add VALUE to our crops and MORE RESPECT to our FARMERS and FARMING Community.

Never in Dominica’s history that its Food Security is so much at stake with that Govt.’s unplanned, inefficient way of doing things. After 32 years of Political Independence, Dominica has lost its Focus as far as Agricultural Development is concerned. Another Market day with what difference? Because just next door, a supermarket will be selling imported CABBAGE, CARROTS, and all kinds of foodstuffs that Dominica could GROW. Farmers are getting POORER.

More ‘JUNK’ FOOD’ is being imported and consumed. Unhealthy Food lased with all kinds of pesticides, and other Chemicals abound. Licenses are given for business places to import more of those foods. IMAGINE THAT NONSENSE in the AGRICULTURAL NATURE ISLE. Govt. does not have a CLUE how to or have the WILL to move Agriculture to the level that would increase revenue for the country while enabling the rural folks and farmers to earn a good income from farming.

Their VISION and strategy is the POLICY and adoption of a BEGGING Mentality and total dependence on outside countries. Authorities have strayed away from the policy of hard work and Earning for a living. The Dominican farmer was once very proud, hard working and dependent people. People’s standard of living have Plummeted significantly, We now are witnessing a MENDICANT Dominican SOCIETY. So again this year, just another function. WHAT is or will be the DIFFERENCE in that MARKET DAY or MARKET DAYS to come if our Agriculture continues to be neglected and GOING DOWN, DOWN, DOWN?
