A 75-year-old community service advocate of Bagatelle has been recognized as the 2013 Cultural Elder. Evantie “Miss Vanty” Hariette received the honor of being named Cultural Elder at Heritage Day Activities held in Bagatelle on Sunday 20th October.
Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence said at Sunday’s activity that Hariette who was educated at the Bagatelle Primary School and pursued a career as a seamstress which she used to assist underprivileged people within the community.
“Evantie pursued a career as a seamstress assisting many underprivileged persons with school uniforms for their children. She also sewed uniforms for sports groups and wob dwiyets and jupes and other creative madrass outfits,” he said.
He added that her love and commitment for the development of her community allowed her to become involved in almost every aspect of development and she began giving herself to community service at a very early age.
Lawrence pointed out further “she became the clerk of the Bagatelle, Fond St Jean Point Caribe Village Council and remained in that position for 26 years. During her tenure she represented the Council and community at several conferences and forums organized by various Ministries and departments. She coordinated various ministries and projects including infrastructural and vocational programs.”
Harriete was further described as a motivating force in the implementation and construction of the Fond St Jean Fisheries Complex. She served for three years as a board member of the Bay Oil Corporations in Dominica which is now known as the Essentials Oil Cooperative.
In 2012, Henry Alexander of Warner was named Cultural Elder.
Congrats to Ms Vantie on a much well-deserved award. She has never stopped serving our community.
hmm that heritage day was a mess. one person took too many responsibility when others volunteer to assist and they flops the it. again it was a family reunion mixed with heritage. it was just a mess!!!!!
Congratulations. Go Charlo!
congrats to you
Congratulations Ms. Vanty!!! Well deserved..
We should have seen that coming and keep away from that man, the socall president.
pam pam lala sings well so the award went home

Congrat Madame.
But at the same time it is so hard to watch Saverin on the stage.
Congratulations Ms. Vantie…. Well deserved! May God continue to bless you and to continue to help people in the BAFOND POINTE community. If we had three more people like you the community would be a better place.
Great job committee members… Keep up the good work. It takes alot to plan something like this.. alot of sacrifice and time. Good work pays off and this one sure did. Good luck at next years independence cultural finals…. i will be watching.
Ms. Vanity definitely deserves this award. She has assisted and continues to help her fellow villagers. She puts others before self. Ms. Vanity, I was very young during the Bagatelle disaster, however, I remember clearly, that you opened your home to my mom and all six children. You fed us, showed us love and never complained. I will be forever grateful you. What a phenomenal woman. Congratulations!
CONGRATULATIONS Cousin Vanty… wish I were to see this in person. Well done and God bless.
Congrats to Miss Vantie
Why Hon. Justina Charles, Minister for Culture and Parl Rep for the neighbouring Grand Bay constituency was not at such an important national function?
You expect her to be teleported from new york to dominica one time? She was attending a diaspora event as minister for culture so she had to sacrifice other events in Dominica.. now go and sleep
How can you leave a National Independence Activity to go to an activity abroad?
Where you priority lies?
Why someone from the Ministry of Culture could not represent you?
That is a Boycott move because the Happy Guy is going to replace her.
Very good question. I guess nobody wanted to steal the show from Charles Savarin….but yhis also speaks volumes about Mr. C Justina’ Chalres future as a parliamentary candidate.
I will say is preference and we the villagers were not too happy about this bec theres a lot of ppl who contributed more to the village than her.she doesnt deserve this at all
i too totally agree….she was chosen in the wrong way..and they know it..i think the bagatelle ppl often put certain people on pedestal and often make these ppl feel they are smarter and can do more than them…we all have brains and capabilities but wen ppl that dont even reside in the village but come around when they know they can get ( Pork fest committee) come around and pretend to be helping…its sad…they want to play cook, caterer, dancer, nurse..all kind of so called community advocate when we all know they only looking for cheques as big as dere waist line…its good to be involved but be involved for the right reasons…
Congratulations to Marcus Thomas who has saved the people of Bagatelle and Fond St. Jean so many times.
Congratulations to Miss Vantie as well who has served so many years and alway love her community.
What u dont know is older than u
There are other ppl in the village who deserved this more than her its preference just bec X is on the committee And X looks about family alone
and X even showing her true colors and asking ppl to make financial contributions to d lady after she get cheque…smh…greed n more greed..play christian still
