Eight contestants will take to the Harlem Plaza stage on Sunday afternoon to vie for the 2010 carnival princess crown.

The girls’ first appearance onstage is the introductory round, which is not judged. They will be attired in school uniform for the subsequent speech round, followed by the talent, costume and party dress rounds.

The contestants are Shanice Carina Moses (St. Martin Primary School), Selena Cuffy (Convent Preparatory School),Makayla Geraldine Raffoul (Roseau Primary School), Totiyana Baron (Savanne Paille Primary), Shakira Bramble (Grand Bay Primary), Ebony Lindsay (Pioneer Preparatory School), Deanne Hunter (Dos Dane Primary School), Shania Morancie (Dublanc Primary School).

The Rotaract Club of Roseau has been the organisers of the National Princess Show for a number of years. Show’s coordinator Zilma Charles said the public’s support is a contribution to the younger ones and the community.

She told Dominica News Online this event has groomed many young females for the bigger pageants. Many carnival queen contestants began at the princess show level, according to her.

“What we’ve seen over the years is that contestants of the Princess Show move on

to compete in the Teenage Pageant and the Miss Dominica Pageant,” she said.

The 2010 Junior Calypso Monarch, Sheldon “De Professor” Alfred, is expected to put in a guest performance at the event.

Very pretty indeed. At least people can dress their daughters. To all who look at them differently please go look at your lives and ask God for forgiveness.

It appears that when something is said that some people do not want to hear, cheap insults are resorted to. But we are trying to have intelligent debate here, so insults will not get us very far.

The people who are criticizing this ‘princess show’ are pointing to the much wider social values of putting children on stage in such a manner. It is clear that these children are merely judged at a superficial level and nothing more. What is the big idea? A human being is more than what we see on the surface. A human being is a mind and encouraging the public to ogle at each other only superficially does not help us to develop our human potential in a meaningful way. When a young woman walks about on a stage (the queen show) half naked in a bikini, what message is sent out to men? The ‘princess show’ is part of a continuum that includes ‘the queen show’ through which young girls graduate. So these young girls, even at this early stage, are being groomed by adults to display some of the ingredients required by ‘the queen show’.

I know all this is tradition, but tradition does not equal good or bad. Slavery was traditional; smoking and wife beating are traditional. Tradition is just what is handed down through generations. In many cases we feel so familiar with what is traditional we get incensed when those values are questioned.

The people who are questioning the value of the ‘princess show’ are making an important point because there are dangers associated with following traditions blindly.

Children in Dominica are usually placed in such a position at home and not on a stage. This princess show has been going on for years. Pedophiles are like that not because they see kids walking on stage with make up. That is how those guys are. Many of you DA poeple are so oblivious to the causes of child exploitation and abuse. It has nothing to do with the stage but kids in DA don’t even feel comfortable enough to speak with their parents about issues and then many of these parents allow so many people to come to close to their kid and within the child sanctuary “their home”. Stop acting up. If you are turned on my little kids then go seek help.

Hello, only ONE of the young ladies was made up and had inappropriate top for her age, that is poor judgment on the parent part. But nothing is wrong in allowing your child to participate, you as the parent just need to have boundaries in the attire of your child throughout the launching up until the competition.

HAHA! VRG.. ARE YOU AN IDIOT?

Now who cares whether or not you put your daughter up for such an event? I CERTAINLY do not!!…

once again another parent who will not give their child the opportunity to do what they like or what they’re interested in. in life you have to understand in order to have a well rounded child growing up in a society you basically cannot hide them from unless a miracle happens that society completely changes for the better, that you are gonna have to give them some freedom and it begins with letting them experience certain things that will be good for them in the future if they are to grow up to be a strong independent self motivating individual.
I see no where in this little pageant where the kids are modelling in swimwear or underwear or their sleepwear. i see no where they are getting them naked for the public till you can match their figures. i see no where they are being taught some form of nastiness for motivation.

If a man decides at looking at one of these young girls as a sex object then that man is totally immature and totally a child molester …hands down!!!

you read the different sections of the show in which the young girls will be participating in. and for you to think about that tells me that you too are thinking that these kids are sex objects.

a show like this helps a child to be aware of the society she lives in
a show like this helps the child to have courage to face their environment and its surroundings
a show like this helps the child to be self motivated
a show like this helps a child to be stronger where self-esteem is a factor
a show like this creates a better awareness of the child’s self, what they can and cannot do
a show like this brings up a child to be positive in knowing that they too can achieve
a show like this Definitely makes such a child a role model to other young kids who believe that they dont have a chance in life to do anything

so for you and your negative thoughts take it and shove it where ……you know the rest of my sentence….(excuse my use of the english language)

PARENTS PLEASE BLOCK THE TOP PART OF THIS WITH YOUR HANDS AND READ THE REST TO YOUR CHILD IF THEY ARE UNABLE TO READ THIS!

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

now to the young ladies i say congratulations on your acceptance to become a part of something so wonderful. take this as a bold step in life where you are able to do something and your peers can look at you as the person you are and be very ambitious themselves to partake in other activities they too know that they are good at and can be better at if they work on it.

i encourage you all to do your best and stand for your right. Have fun and make the show enjoyable like kids will normally do. at the end of the show a winner will be announced for the rounds but in your heart you know that you had all the fun you had and you put on a show to the best of your skills and abilities and you showed society that whether you are young as this you can have got what it takes to be a better person and role model to yourself, your peers, your age group and even those much older. because even if we are older we look up to young people like you to make this world a better place.
please dont be jealous of the school or person who wins. take this and make yourself stronger that in the future you are gonna work much harder to be the best among the best there is.

GOOD LUCK TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU!! remember to HAVE FUN AND ENJOY THE SHOW CAUSE ITS YOURS! without you all there wouldnt have been a show this year!

    once again ………………GOOD LUCK!!

Some of the photos are tasteful, others are not, little under-aged girls with make up and unbecoming tops? Why should girls so young be wearing make-up and have their chests exposed? Parents, Organisers please take note. This is not good at all…. My My My what are we coming to!

That makes me uncomfortable. It looks like sexualization of the innocent.

With all these sexual child abuse cases in the news recently, this princess show could be a contributory factor. This show might encourage some adult men to look at children in the wrong way.

I would not not put my daughter in a competition like that.

It makes no sense to make a big fuss about child sex abuse on the one hand and then be parading young children like sex objects on the other.

All that sort of thing is sending out the wrong message.
