Newcomer and the youngest participant in the 2016 calypso competition, Janae Jackson, is the only female calypsonian selected among the nine finalists to battle three-time Calypso King, Gregory “Karessah” Riviere, in one of the biggest shows for the Carnival season.

She competed among 19 other calypsonians before a packed crowd at the Newtown Savannah on Saturday night, with a song entitled, “My Love, My Country”.

The other finalists are: De Bobb, Shadow Flow, Checker, Sye, Observer, Boople, Webb and Dice.

Those who failed to get the judge’s approval are: Checko, Charis D, Beno, Lugars, Picky, Daddy Chess, Sting Ray, Jama B, Soul Puss, Earl White Jr. and Black Diamond.

The Calypso competition is carded for February 6.

I am so happy I am not a judge, that must be a very tough job, probably gives them indigestion after. I am maybe just as luckily I did not see what the judges saw on the stage for I may have a different prospective to what I feel now. But listening to the performances on Saturday night coming very clear over the radio, I would not have chosen most of the calypsos chosen for the finals. But as the saying goes the Judges decision is Final.

But being a calypso lover and having listened to the show, I feel a bit disappointed and very let down. Here is a question. Which of the 9 calypsos that made it to the Finals we can expect to hear and appreciate past Carnival Tuesday?

The other day I spent an entire Sunday afternoon listening and singing to the Mighty Sparrow and his Calypsos from so long ago are still so enjoyable. Tell me which one of the calypsos in the this year finals you believe you can enjoy 20 years from now and would still mean something to you.

Fortunately for king Dice, neither Cecil Joseph or Daryl Titre were judges on Saturday night. Callers of Q95 complained to Matt on the hot seat that Daryl in particular referred to Dice’s song as rubbish. In fact, many of Dice’s fans are requesting that he apologizes to Dice, his fans and DBS radio where the alleged comments were made. If the allegations are correct, as far as them fellers are concerned, whether it is calypso or election season , their red flags will be flown.

They were all great songs. Bobby should host a ‘controversial calypso king’ show for the semifinalists who did not make it.

I thought Calypso is big man thing a child between grown men so what she will be crown as the King, maybe you all should have put up a Calypso Queen show where the young ladies can build from Her song is good but I hope she is not been push thru because she is young..

      @Patriot: It’s no longer called ‘King’…..it’s ‘Monarch’…..appropriate non-gender specific word.

Maybe if you were paying more attention you would recall that Tasha P has already been crowned “Monarch” of Dominica and she was very young among big men in Dominica…

Well is the judges decision but Sye and Wedd placing was a lilttle surprising to me. The calpyso organization should not let any body out on bail for criminal charges participate in the competion. Dice should step aside this season , its not fair to the others with a clean slate.

Sorry Mrs. Jackson but you should not have made it. That spot belong to Cheko or Jamma B period. You had great presentation but the song is not well structured and does not flow. Besides that, I believe that the judging was well done.

    Assertive, NOT Aggressive!

@ Shameless: You don’t know what you talking about.

That young lady is MISS Jackson number one. Second of all Checko’s song is the one that is scattered and all over the place. Jamma B’s song is simply not interesting enough this year. I noticed many people were using the opportunity while Jamma was on stage to leave to buy their drinks, socialize etc.

Last night’s show convinced me that, yes, Labourites are really daft people….Karressah is there calling every labourite a RAT….and they applauding him….then, he comes calling them..A..es…and they applaud him even more, smhh….no wonder they see things only through red lenses.

I applaud those who make it thru to the finals…Congrats…most of my favourite songs except Lugars, who really now needs to go on retirement for constantly messing up good songs, didn’t make it. Can’t wait for the finals…Remember, Prosper warn allu: one skng can’t win crown…si, come correct.

I am in total agreement with you. I had to tell a few of them standing next to me if they don’t realized that Karessah is callling allu rats…listen to the song…it was after that they realized… this is in direct contrast to Scrunter, when he insinuated in his song that it was Mano who burnt down his house himself, UWPites booed him and forced him out of retirement.
