The South Florida Dominica Diaspora Association and the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA) awarded 10 Dominicans on Saturday night at the Calypso Show for their contribution towards national development.

The South Florida Dominica Diaspora Association presented plaques to Derek “De Hunter” St. Rose for his commitment and dedication in promoting Dominica’s music worldwide; Glenda Bertrand for her outstanding contribution and commitment to early childhood education for over 30 years; Angelo “Fufu” Charles for over 45 years of dedication as a safe driver in public transportation and Ashworth Brong Simon for his outstanding contribution in arts, culture and community service.

This was the third awards ceremony of its kind. Four persons are awarded every year.

Pioneer of the South Florida Dominica Diaspora Association Emile “Pa Ben” Serrant told Dominica News Online he is motivated because of recipients’ appreciation for the gesture.

“It’s very, very much encouraging because the people that are awarded they show so much gratitude and appreciation for it. This is what really encourages me to do it. The people when they’ve been awarded they’re so happy and proud of it,” Serrant said.

The plaques were purchased by Dominicans residing in the US. The DCA also collaborates with the diaspora association to give each awardee two VIP Tickets to the calypso finals.

Serrant extends gratitude to Alex Bruno, who contributes his time towards preparation of the ceremony. He also recognised the efforts of Anne-Marie Clarke of E-promotions residing in Florida. Clarke is a promoter of Dominican music and crafts. Serrant said she donates the most expensive plaque for the ceremony.

The selection process for the awardees is done with the assistance of Shermain Green-Browne, Lucinda Alfred, Sobers Esprit and Alex Bruno. Serrant said they receive suggestions for names, and it is discussed and the more qualified persons are chosen to be awarded.

The South Florida Dominica Diaspora Association comprises of six persons.

In addition to that, the DCA separately presented plaques to Bertrand Bruney, Franklyn Harris, Philbert Alleyne, Derrick St. Rose, Ras Kelly, Darnley Guye and Emil Padencia for their dedicated service to the organisation.
