Young calypsonian releases video

The Irish Kid

A contestant in the upcoming Junior Calypso Monarch Competition has released a video just before the staging of the show.

“Endangered Species” is performed by Lemar “The Irish Kid” Irish who is representing the St. John’s Academy at the competition.

The song is described as a ‘social commentary’ addressing issues which have made humans an endangered species on earth.

It speaks on issues such as juvenile delinquency among young men, the destruction of the environment by humans and the needless wars currently waging around the world.

The song was penned by veteran calypso judge, Livingston ‘Spencer’ Caselle and recorded by Cornell Phillip.

The Junior Calypso Monarch Competition is slated for January 31 at the Harlem Plaza.

This isn’t the silly hip-hop or slutty dancehall music you may be accustomed to. It is calypso and is meant to carry a message. Sorry, but this isn’t usual short, lyrically-empty videos with half-naked women that is the norm these days.

Congratulations to you “Irish Kid” I heard you when you first started in the calypso business and thought you had great potential back then. This video with such profound lyrics is an indication that you have grown in the artform and so I will encourage you to stay focused not just on calypso but your schooling. Continue to learn so that you could later write for yourself too, to compliment your talent in singing and delivery. I wish you all the best

Very good song. Its been a few years now since I always look forward to his songs. Good future calypsonian.

On the other hand, I think they should remove the images of the other “@@” people in the video. One needs permission to display such images in the video especially if it represents one of negativity. The producers should try to obtain local pics (even if is with actors). This can lead to legal problems. Those men do not play when it comes to their images. DA already embarrassed those people when their ship landed on it’s shores. Don’t think they not monitoring DNO for a hiccup. Payback is a ‘beach’.

little man is doing his very best with what he is given but common sense. This is a young boy..why does he need to remember 8 minutes of lyrics. No more than 2 verses should do plus the song should suit his voice. Some of the notes are way too high for him. I can feel the strain for him when he hits them. Nevertheless he has delivered well on his part.
