Minister for Culture Justina Charles has stated that the opportunity afforded a number of young local artistes by LIME’s Creole in the Park (CITP), serves not only to preserve Dominican music but also helps maintain Dominican culture.
The Minister was addressing the opening ceremony of CITP earlier this week when she stated conveyed the importance of the event to the cultural calendar as we near Independence celebrations yet again.
“CITP has showcased many upcoming bands, individual artistes, international folk groups, as well as established bands and performers here in Dominica and the region. This annual activity features the best of Dominica’s cuisine, local products and art and craft, providing an opportunity to sample great local, creole food. This event not only promotes our music, but contributes to the promotion and preservation of our creole culture,” Charles remarked
Charles additionally pointed to the benefits to the economic activity that the event provides, through event related services and being an additional attraction to tourists.
She stated, “CITP also has tremendous benefits for the local economy. Many of our businesses and entrepreneurs benefit directly as goods and services are procured for this event, including sound, lights, publicity and other event related services, hotel accommodation, transportation and so on. Vendors are able to sell their products. Musicians and other cultural groups are engaged to perform. And CITP attracts many visitors to our shores, thus generating much needed revenue.”
She also spoke of the decision to give one dollar from each patron’s entrance fee towards the development of culture and she made a call for other corporate citizens to contribute towards the development and preservation of culture.
“This initiative by LIME is an excellent example of good corporate citizenship and collaboration with other stakeholders in making a positive contribution to the development and promotion of our music, culture and economy. LIME has decided to contribute one dollar of every entrance ticket sold during CITP to the National Cultural Council. These funds will go towards cultural development and programs. I need to thank LIME for this gesture. I therefore urge other in the private sector to find creative ways to inject resources towards developing our cultural product,” said Charles.
Today’s CITP will feature Freddie and Friends, Nelly Sthare, Asher Thomas, WCK, DJ Big Ben and Bounty Killer.
