In keeping with its focus on the elderly for this season, the Coulibistrie Primary School on Friday, 21st October, recognized two cultural elders from the community of Coulibistrie and Morne Rachette.
Ms. Rosie Brown was awarded for her success at Creole Songs where she won several competitions at the National level. She was also instrumental at forming cultural groups at Morne Rachette and Coulibistrie. Ms. Clemence Joseph, a former Madam Wob Dwiyet (1996), was awarded for her contribution towards developing cultural awareness among the youth at church, school and village level.
Both ladies were given a gift basket and a Certificate of Recognition by the school. The school also put on a display of Creole Songs and Bele Dancing which these cultural icons enjoyed.
Miss Brown sang one of her popular songs to the school, in a beautiful voice which has mellowed over the years, and Miss Joseph did an exciting talent dramatizing the importance of local foods grown in Dominica. This was well received by all.
Present at the ceremony were Mr. Hector John, Parliamentary Representative, Village Council Chairperson, Ms. Marilyn Pascal, District nurse, Mrs. C. Larocque, Chairman and staff of the EAT FISH Committee, Staff and students of the Gospel Mission Pre- school, parents and well wishers.
The day culminated with lunch where fish, prepared in several ways, was served to all present. This was made possible by the EAT FISH committee led by Mr. Paul and Ms. Ladonna George, and the parents of the school who helped to prepare the fish.
