More residents aware of “I am Dominica” campaign – survey

More Dominicans know of, and welcome the ‘I am Dominica’ campaign, figures of a survey show.

Of the 193 Dominicans interviewed, only seven of them said they are unaware of the campaign which was launched in May this year, said Chief Executive Officer of Discover Dominica Authority Collin Piper on a radio program on Tuesday.

“Only seven individuals interviewed, indicated that the survey was the first time that they were hearing of the campaign. I think a lot of what we’ve been doing, a lot of the discussion we’ve been having, has definitely resonated and if we take the survey as a proxy of Dominicans, a lot of Dominicans have heard of the campaign,” he said.

52 percent of the interviewees said they understand the campaign, 14 percent said they neither understood nor misunderstood, 14 percent said they did not understand the campaign very well, and 20 percent said they did not understand it at all, Piper disclosed.

The survey was conducted three months ago in communities including Wesley, Scott’s Head, Castle Comfort, Grandbay, Pointe Michel and and the city of Roseau.

The ‘I am Dominica’ campaign has been criticized for featuring many prominent individuals, but Piper assured that more of the individuals considered the ‘every day’ Dominican, are now featured, including a farmer, fisherman, and Kalinago native.

Collin Piper said the findings of the survey represent hope that the campaign is on point locally, and the next move is to use it for greater market overseas.

“We have essentially unified the message that goes out to all of our source markets: the North American market, both U.S. and Canada. We focus on particular states, the U.K., France, French West Indies,” he said.

This I am Dominica, thing makes no sense to me.How successful has it been? Have our tourism arrival increased as a result of this campaign? By what percentage?
What about all the criminals on island, are they not Dominica too? The thieves, the murderers, the dishonest leaders, the money launderers, the arsonists, etc. are they not Dominica too? So if they are, we are lying to the outside world then?
Honestly i hate this thing, and i don’t even repeat it.It was poorly thought out, and those concerned should go back to the drawing board.!

    193 surveyed.

Where and when was this survey carried out?
Who took part in this survey?

The ‘I am Dominica’ campaign is a good one, which I fully understand, but if you really want public opinion, try asking more than 193.

That slogan leaves a lot of clarification to be desired. No person is an actual island.
The slogan makes no sense to me and I am sure a lot of others.

Come on people…Wise up. No one says that we are islands. Obviously not. But who or what makes Dominica what it is? It is our ideas, our policies, our behaviour, our culture, our people. Just like the church is not the building but the people sitting inside, Dominica is the people who is responsible for its success or its failure.
