Cultural elder in the Kalinago Territory, Prosper Paris, is proposing that a government budget be specifically allocated to the annual Kalinago Week celebrations.

“We have been making this request that a budget be allocated to us, just as you have independence celebrations, that you have a budget allocated to the Kalinago Week celebrations,” he said during a press conference on Wednesday to launch the week of activities.

He is also proposing that the week be made part of the island’s independence celebrations since this begins just a week after Kalinago Week.

Prosper noted that preparations for Kalinago Week have always been a challenge since organizers have to be “looking and asking corporate sectors to donate, contribute and lend support.”

Minister for the Carib Affairs Ashton Graneau, gave the assurance that the government will look out for the Kalinago people.

“Yes, that is something that we are looking at because really and truly every year there is a budget for independence, there is a budget for World Creole Music Festival and so on,” he stated. “We believe that it is just right that we should have a budget for Kalinago week.”

Kalinago Week runs from September 15 to 22.

The activities will begin with a church service on the September 15 followed by a marathon from Salybia to Bataca.

On Monday, September 16, a hill in the Kalinago Territory named Monkey Hill will be renamed after the Hilton family. The new name will be Hilton Hill.

On Tuesday there will be a cleanup campaign and planting of grass on the Mahaut River playing field.

On Wednesday, there will be a what is described as a “live monument” in Pond Case, which will include an awards ceremony and cocktail. During that event Kalinagos will be dressed in native outfit.

On Friday there will be a treasure hunt on items seized by the police in the 1930 Carib War.

On Saturday there will cultural show.

The week of activities will climax with a sports day on Sunday, September 23.

The week of activities is being held under the theme “Celebrating The Lives Of Our Kalinago People”.

These people are content to accept very little. Last week they found all the red shirts and hats to go ‘meet the PM at Sinekou’. Why not ask for more?

Prosper Paris I find all you like to have handouts too much. You all are the indigenous people on the island and that makes it very easy for you all to access funds from international organisations for those types of activities. stop waiting for things to be handed on a platter to you and start writing proposals to the organisations. stupesssss!!! well the neg people should ask for a budget for a week of neg activities too man???? stupesss

I fully support the idea of a Carib Monument at Pond Casse. Time to remove that silly Domino Corporation sign from there. Replace it with a monument that Dominicans can identify with.

Kalinago people are Dominicans as well
that segregation nonsense needs to stop
I understand embracing culture but why is their separate treatment for Caribs and everyone else? we are one people with 1 government and 1 budget

If the Caribs gets a budget for their week of activities, I am asking for my town as well and making my friends ask for their area as well.

Unemployment sky high, poverty in full bloom, drug abuse overflowing, infrastructure crumbling, alcoholism the order of the day and you don’t ask for money to empower the Kalinago people but money to have good time???

No wonder I see absolutely no sign of progress every time I visit my parents.
