The Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) has decided to name its 2024 Knockout Cup “THE ELIAS DUPUIS CUP” in honor of Elias Dupuis who died in an alleged drowning accident on Easter Monday. Additionally, there will be a moment of silence at the start of each game and players and officials will wear black ribbons on their jerseys during the games. This, the organization said, is to recognize Dupuis’ life and contribution to the game of basketball as a referee and player.
“Elias Dupuis a proud son of the village of Bense, was a passionate basketball referee who had a desire to find and train persons who cared strongly about the game,” it said.
“As he would say in his words, ‘ I do have a penchant for helping others learn things that I have a deep understanding of, so I am keen to deepen my knowledge of the skill of refereeing and implementing the rules of the game of basketball in real-time and assisting with decision-making skills for correct decisions.'”
DABA said Dupuis lived by the core principles of a basketball referee.
“Although he was Dominica Amateur Basketball Association Referee for only five years, his motivation to excel at refereeing and to pass on that motivation to others is what separated him from other referees. He was a really good referee!!!!,” it said.
The organization pointed out key highlights in Dupius’ career as a basketball referee:
-A referee from 2019 to 2024 last refereed during the 2024 Knock Out Cup on Wednesday, March 27,` 2024
-Referee the National Basketball League Finals in August of 2023
-Referee at the Windward Island Schools Games in 2019
-Referee at 3×3 since 2021
-In 2023, served on the Officials Committee of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association representing Referees and Table Officials across the league
Prior to being referee, Dupuis played basketball at the primary school level (2001) and the high school level (2002-2004) in Dominica. He also played for Kingsway High School in Jamaica (2004 – 2009) and for Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica (2023).
“Elias’s contribution to the sport of basketball as a referee left a mark, his ability to communicate with players, fans, and fellow officials was a hallmark of his personality,” DABA said. “Elias was the voice of reasoning, a champion for discipline, a mentor to the younger officials, an inspirational leader, and an advisor to all. Elias’s approach to life was with the freedom of positivity, he greeted you with a smile and said goodbye with a smile. We will truly miss this genuine champion. The executive board of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association felt that Elias embodies the qualities that [define] how one should approach life. Elias will be missed by the basketball fraternity and the all those that met him.”
The organization said its president, the executive board, and the members of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association express deepest condolences to the family and friends of Elias Dupuis.
“May God guide him through his journey to Heaven and continue to protect his beautiful family,” it said.

Dominica has a habit of naming things after people, just for the sake of naming things after people. You don’t have to keep changing the names of things just because somebody associated with it died. Where do you draw the line?

Man Elias would have been so honored. I know he was very passionate about elevating local basketball. Crazy that its only after we pass that we get the few flowers.

mysteliks gave good advice so they must take hid…I understand now how easy it is to die there since mysteliks explained.. we almost miss him wii thank God he was saved..then if he had died they would name something after him. all now they should find something to name after mysteliks. he keeps us well informed.. emo and the list. them people just dere waiting as somebody die they ready to name stuff smh
