President of the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD) Judy Sango said she is optimistic that the DAPD will fulfill the set target of $70, 000 for the 2024 National Dollar Day, which marks the 18th Dollar Day.
The annual National Dollar Day was conceptualized by then-DAPD treasurer Micheal Murphy in 2006. This year the theme for Dollar Day is “Your Benevolence, Our Continued Existence.”
Miss Sango explained that this initiative is DAPD’s major fund-raising activity which plays a vital part in DAPD’s operation. Therefore, she encourages everyone from all walks of life to donate at least one dollar to this worthy cause.
“These funds go towards continuing to provide the important services for persons with disabilities, the programs, and our essential services. Unfortunately, last year we did not meet our target. However, our target has always been $70,000 yearly and we have never met that goal over the years. In spite of this , we remain optimistic that 2024 will be our year to meet that target with the assistance of the general public,” Sango stated.
Sango added, “ The funds that are donated are going to a good cause, in light of this I just want to appeal to persons to assist, as we do the work of advocacy in Dominica and provide for persons with disabilities, as persons with disabilities are in need of these crucial services across Dominica.”
“DAPD longevity could not have been possible without the support and help of the general population. The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD) has been in existence for over forty years. I want to say thank you to those who have already donated and those who are planning to donate,” Sango said. Donations can be made until December 31, 2024, at DAPD’s office at Canal Lane, Goodwill, or they can be contacted on 440 0842 for additional details on how to contribute.
To think that it’s been going since 2006 and I have never heard of ‘Dollars Day’. It’s a very good initiative and I agree that there needs to be other ways that people can donate. Also, advertise and give more information about the purpose etc. However, keep trying to do something for a good cause.
I think the DAPD should have certain businesses around Roseau assigned to collect the donations on their behalf since not everybody may be able to go to their office Goodwill. Just a thought.
A good idea might be to extend the dollar day event as a Go-Fundme, social media event which would have a wider reach to Dominicans in the diaspora who might be in a better position to make significant contributions rather than relying on just home based Dominicans.
