DBS Radio National Reading Competition to begin on April 15, 2024

Dominica Broadcasting Station (DBS) radio will commence the staging of the National Reading Competition on April 15, 2024. The competition is in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training, and National Excellence. This year’s competition is held under the theme of “Reading and Creole” as DBS radio carries on its mission to preserve the Creole language.

Coordinator of the 2024 DBS Radio, Ministry of Education National Reading Competition Kirshena Joseph stated that this year will be a success.

“As a team, we are working tirelessly to ensure that this year’s National Reading competition is as successful as other years,” she said.

“The first information around one of the DBS Radio Ministry of Education National Reading competition…begins on Monday, April 15, at the Berean Christian Academy from 2:30 PM with an official opening ceremony. “

As a surprise announcement, she stated the new sponsor of the competition will be Dragon Windows. Courts Unicomer had been the leading sponsor of the competition for many years prior.

“On behalf of the management and staff of DBS Radio, I want [to] thank Courts Unicomer for being the competition’s headline sponsor from the competition’s inception until 2020,” Joseph expressed.

“This sponsorship made the OECS leg of the competition a reality and we hope to one day see its return. We would like to say thank you to the office of the Prime Minister, for headline sponsoring the competition in 2021 and 2023. Without this, the competition staging may not have occurred in these years. I’m happy to announce that 2024 DBS radio Ministry of Education National Reading competition’s headline sponsor is Dragon Windows.”

She stated that when approached to take on such a huge role in the competition, there was no hesitation from Dragon Windows and stated that DBS radio is truly grateful for this kind of support and hopes this is the beginning of a very long relationship for the benefit of Dominica’s children.

Republic Bank will also come on board in a very special way financially.

Joseph further stated that in this 16th year of the competition, DBS will continue the legacy of the late Felix Henderson whose vision was to encourage reading among Dominica children, for today and tomorrow.

“We aspire to make this competition bigger and better every year and as a team, we tasked ourselves to visit every primary school in the island; beginning on February 19, and ending on March 22 we visited the 58 primary schools, and out of these we had meetings with 57 School Administrators.”

She reported that the meetings engaged principals, deputy principals and teachers in charge, literacy coordinators, Peace Corps volunteers, and coaches and the team also met past participants who are now older and some are preparing to take this year’s grade six national assessment.

“Principals and teachers were also eager to share success stories of other participants who have gone on to higher education and are doing well for themselves…so it can be said that the National Reading competition plays an important role in our children’s education.”

The staff of DBS learned about the various unique programs and support systems in place concerning improving literacy in reading spaces and libraries noted the concerns and suggestions about the reading competition, and listened to their individual needs.
