Discover Dominica Authority, in collaboration with jazz artist, Cameron Pierre, recently hosted a workshop on Monday, December 29, 2014 on “The Art of Improvisation.”
Born in the United Kingdom but raised in Dominica, the artist taught himself to play the guitar at the age of sixteen. In 1994, he formed the band “Creole,” described as a “multi-cultural mélange of musicians from Africa, Haiti, Cuba and the Caribbean.” To date, Mr. Pierre has released five solo albums. With a warm sound and alluring stage presence, the artist has received glowing reviews worldwide.
The workshop was well attended by approximately 40 persons of all age ranges, who were well informed on how to elaborate their music. It was very beneficial that there were no registration fees for the workshop as Mr. Pierre answered many questions asked by the attendees. Topics discussed included band etiquette and the importance of punctuality, working within a band setting, guitar tuning and volume issues. The artist was pleasantly surprised to discover a host of really talented musicians, some of which have already signed up for private lessons.
Mr. Pierre, who has performed at regional events including Dominica’s Jazz ‘n Creole in 2012, feels that while Dominica has a lot of talent, a lack of musical education exists on island. Suggestions were made for future workshops to be held, particularly targeting various schools on island in order to involve more youth in the music industry, thereby encouraging potential musicians such as the talented Michele Henderson, Freddy Nicholas and Julie Martin.
Discover Dominica Authority would like to extend its gratitude to Alliance Francaise de la Dominique and Arden Sounds Inc for partnering in making this fruitful workshop possible.
We need more stuff like that…Thanks to Mr.Pierre
