DGS Class of 92’ Reunion Committee visits the Dominica Infirmary

As part of its 20th school-leaving reunion this year, the DGS Class of 1992 has embarked on a number of projects geared at giving back a little to the needy within our communities. Like the Great American Poet, Maya Angelou, the Class of ’92 found that among other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.

It was this liberation that they felt on Saturday 30th March when the planning committee presented some laundry suppliers and toiletries to the Dominica Infirmary and mingled with the inmates there.

According to the Assistant Director of the Dominica Infirmary, Mrs. Angela Pierre, who received the items on behalf of the institution, it is always heartwarming when members of the public show support to the infirmary, no matter how small their contributions may be. She also stated that the infirmary needs much more assistance from corporate citizens as it is often a headache to be asking the same contributors over and over again to assist. Her desire is that many more businesses and groups will do like the Class of ’92 Committee and make a donation.  She said that the infirmary is in need of two commercial washing machines right now, and she does not know how they are going to be purchased as most of the infirmary’s subvention from the government goes towards the payment of salaries.

A moment with one of the centenarians

Irvin Hamilton, the Chairman of the committee, reiterated Class of 92’s desire not only to have reunion fun but also to give back to the society and the school, which molded them and guided them into being what they are today. This small contribution, according to him, is the first of a number of donations that the Committee intends to make to a number of similar institutions during this, its 20th Anniversary, year.

Hamilton called on corporate citizens and all religious entities on the island to come to the aid of the Dominica Infirmary, which has been doing a great job in caring for the elderly, to help it in its quest to purchase the washing machines. He said,  ‘as the godly nation we always ballyhoo ourselves to be, we need to attend to the call that if there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the LORD your God has given you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be.’

Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.  The love brought about by the kindness of Class of ’92 giving to the infirmary warms the heart of all the members of the planning committee present at the small ceremony and was further reiterated by meeting Celus, the longest stay-in inmate at the institution and two centenarians currently sheltered under the infirmary´s roof.

The DGS Class of ’92 20th Anniversary Reunion is carded for October 28 – November 5, 2012.  The week-long event aims to bring together school mates and teachers to reminisce on the memorable time spent at our alma mater and share our life experiences.

Not to take away from the efforts of the students, but do we refer to our elderly in an elder living home as “inmates”. As in …

“It was this liberation that they felt on Saturday 30th March when the planning committee presented some laundry suppliers and toiletries to the Dominica Infirmary and mingled with the inmates there.”

It just goes to show how we think of our sick and unfortunate elders.

      in·mate ( n m t ). n. A resident of a dwelling that houses a number of occupants, especially a person confined to an institution

To many of us in Dominica apply meaning of words too narrowly naively thinking that a word only denotes its every day usages.

Words sometimes have 2 or more meanings; thus, it is always safer and wiser to consult a dictionary or otherwise to see if a word is use correctly instead of turning out to be adumbass….

Peoplehoused at an infirmary, hospital, etc are called inmates just like prisoners because they are all confined to a ‘single place of residence.

It would be inappropriate to call people, who are house in an infirmary patients as some people at the infirmary have no sickness whatsoever.

Here are some dictionary meaning of inmates:

      Definition of INMATE [in-meyt] n.
: any of a group occupying a single place of residence; especially : a person confined (as in a prison or hospital) source:http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inmate

      in·mate [in-meyt]
1.a person who is confined in a prison, hospital, etc.
2.Archaic . a person who dwells with others in the same house. source:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/inmates?s=t

      Google inmates….

The people at the infirmary was correctly referred to in the article despite how grating inmates sound to your narrow ears….

You all can embarrass yourself, wee. People at the infirmary are called inmates just like prisoners are called inmates…..an inmate is someone who lives in a single residence such as in a prison, hospital, etc…..get your facts before you start to pinpoint error…check your dictionary .SHAMEFUL….typical Dominicans trying to nullify good with a little bad…who is laughing now…dumb…

        @ “Reading as Well”

So someone has a concern about how the people are referred to at that institution and that is the best way you could find to respond?

I am sure you can do better than that.
