DMA official sees potential for manufacturing of pharmaceuticals in Dominica

Executive Member of the Dominica Manufacturer’s Association (DMA), Dr. Gail Defoe, has highlighted the need for consideration to be given to the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals in Dominica in light of the significant challenge that viruses and bacteria now present to the world.

“The single biggest challenge in the world and our future would be viruses and bacteria,” Dr. Defoe said at DMA-organized press conference on Tuesday. “We have diseases far worse than the coronavirus…”

“What does that mean to manufacturers? And what does that mean for our countries?” Defoe asked about the coronavirus, which, over the past two and a half months, has killed hundreds of people, particularly in China, the country where the virus is reported to have originated.

According to the latest reports, some 75,303 people have been infected, 2012 have died and 15,126 have recovered.

Dr. Defoe explained that at present, Japan’s economy is said to be going into a recession because all the tourists from America are no longer going to Japan.

“How do we as a small island state ensure that within our economy we have the resources to combat these disorders and diseases?” Defoe asked. “We can do that through research and through manufacturing.”

She continued, “So as we think about manufacturing we have to broaden our thinking on not only being able to manufacture sweets and candies but especially pharmaceuticals, which we are rich in.”

Why is my people so negative, we need to give progress a chance to many times I read of ideas that can bring something good to the country and some low down narrow brain stay on the side and complain. Instead of giving advise or saying something good they cry it down. Don’t just sit on a side and cry government not doing this or that give your two cents make a contribution to something positive its our country not UWP. or DLP. its ours.

Are these people for real? Pharmaceuticals to treat bacterial and viral diseases? That is never going to happen. Why would any company bypass places like India and China and put that kind of manufacturing plant in Dominica? I can’t think of one good reason.

Jolly’s manufacturing can be given the green light. They completing a multi-million dollar facility just out of Roseau Central.
I will trust them with my tax money or CBI money . They have a management structure and a solid reputational history for excellence. They may drive a hard bargain but that is business.

Will you retirees just find a pastime or a party time job, learn to play an instrument or something, instead of full-time maccoing stories on DNO to let out your negative juices. So boring!

You sound so stupid, the is biotech, genetic engineering, metabolic engineering, stem cell research, cancer research, do you know what the future holds if dominica enhances and promotes and even tap into 1% of the nearly trillion ec dollar pharmaceuticals industry?

Dominicans are perfectly content with their “less than any other country minimum wage,” you think is progress these people want? lmao

More red clinic and free EVERYTHING, that’s what they want. They are easy to please, while the top 100 share the income of the CBI scheme! If you don’t believe me, look at the election results.

“but especially pharmaceuticals, which we are rich in.” Oh really like cannabis which is still banned even after they said it would be decriminalized?

Hey Derp, decriminalization is not legalization, dont get the 2 mixed up. The punishments and harassment for possession is not as great as they use to be but it is still illegal to own it or have it in your possession.

@look joke, I think derp intends to encourage the powers that be to get with it. Here we have potential business opportunities impeded by govt inaction and foot dragging on job creation and medical benefits for many of Dominica’s citizens. I do hope they get with it soon, The Association of Manufacturers in Dominica is way ahead of them for opportunities to grow business.

So long as the government is not controlling it then it will never be. Dominica will be the last island to fully legalize Marijuana, by that time it will be too late. We will be eating the crumbs from the table, if there are any crumbs at all.

Are you saying you don’t trust the current government to do the right thing, legalize and stop the harassment and incarceration? I’m sure they can if they give it priority for new business creation instead of relying on fragile tourism and cbi.
