‘Do Nothing’ campaign today, word on the street

Crowd at last Sunday’s peaceful gathering

Dominicans are being encouraged to ‘Do Nothing’ today, a campaign launched by the United Workers Party (UWP) and other opposition forces.

However, while some people are supporting the campaign others are criticizing the move.

Dominican News Online (DNO) took to the streets on Monday to seek the opinion of the public as far as the campaign is concerned.

“It’s a good idea if it gets its desired effect,” one male business owner said. “As a matter of fact, it is already having an effect. I see Parliamentarians painting a building on Saturday, calling the move ‘Do Something’ Saturday. I am even seeing publications in obscure online news outlets talking about the Marigot Hospital.”

He continued, “So it seems the government is going on the defensive just because of the ‘Do Nothing’ campaign, just to show that they are actually doing something.”

One public officer who supported the move said he believes it would be more effective if the UWP and others behind the campaign, not only use Monday but the next couple of weeks for the campaign.

“This I believe will send a clearer message across,” he stated.

A young entrepreneur told DNO that this campaign isn’t beneficial.

“I am a young hardworking man and when I first heard about this campaign it took me by surprise,” he said. “I just couldn’t believe they were advising Dominicans to ‘Do Nothing’. This will discourage Dominicans from engaging in nation-building and assisting others.”

Furthermore, he said while he agrees with the opposition’s view that the economy is declining, “I don’t think the ‘Do Nothing’ campaign is a good idea since it does not promote upliftment of the Dominican people.”

One local entertainer said he doesn’t think that it will work, because Dominicans lack unity.

“I don’t think this one will work, because in Dominica we lack a level of unity and in order for something like this to work we need unity to make that possible,” he said. “I think it’s a good attempt but people at this point are too scared to follow through because they are afraid to be victimized.”

Meanwhile, a single mother of three argued that she cannot stay home or go to work and do nothing.

“If I stay home or go to work and do nothing’, who is going to pay me for doing nothing?” She asked. “Who is going to help me to support my children when I am out of a job? I am a single parent and I am the only one providing for my children.”

According to her, “If I do not work, I cannot eat.”

She continued, “This is why I believe this is a bad move by the opposition groups. They should come up with something else.  Organize more meetings and share your plans with supporters.”

She added, “I am a supporter of the UWP but this campaign they are calling on Dominicans to support I am not in favour of it.”

An Ocean of difference looking at this pic : saying something but doing nothing. Compared to 20,000 men, women and children on M-29-79 . They besieged, looted, vandalized, their fellow men and set on fire private and public buildings. As they chanted “Bawey Yo! Batt Yo! Panh Yo! Doze MFKS. Bouilley Yo avec louille chaud”! Chauvinism and Hatred gone WILD.

As they carried out Satan’s calling thru human voices. Coups are not of GOD. Reason why it carries a lifetime of anguish. Like every country where Coups were carried out. It brings out the worse in Nations. Regimes, loss of rights, human integrity, lawlessness, grief and natural punishment.

Today, I see a 360 degree display of behavior in my languishing men and women. No children🙏 No weapons 🙏

Support this movement or not – DA has come a long way, baby, to express their political disagreements. Had this powerful but seemingly inconspicuous movement been placated in 1979. I WOULD BE EN DOMINQUE…

Time flies and waits on no one!!! Doing nothing is not an option when it comes to living this gift of life. Finding ways to add value should be the order of each and every day.

In vowing to do nothing and actually doing so, one is flying in the face of God who has blessed us with the finite gift of life.

Making your sincere wishes known to God and keeping on stepping and grinding will bear a lot more fruit than folding one’s arms and hoping that the world will slow down and take notice.

DO NOTHING DAY? I really want to know where and who advising UWP. why they could not organize their supporters in groups to do something. Like community service for the homeless. Or go ant clean a area so later they can say we do something and the pay would not matter. but you asking folks to stay home and do nothing. At the end of the day your leaders can pay their bills feed their children. You keep your money in your account and laughing at your supporters that cannot make ends meet good try. Eddison. Linton and Fountain and the dummy Lugay laughing.

@Hussey “You keep your money in your account and laughing at your supporters that cannot make ends meet good try. Eddison. Linton and Fountain and the dummy Lugay laughing.” My friend Vivian, long to see you. I admire your steadfastness in your loyalty to crooked Roosevelt. But it would do better for your soul and conscience if only you would be a man of truth instead of being on the sides of crooks. Look how you are admitting that the UWP supporters “CAN HARDLY MAKE ENDS MEET.” So why do you think that is? What you and your labor party expected to happen when they mischievously killed the banana industry, got rid of Ross University, dismantled the Dominica coconut products (DCP), wouldn’t provide feeder roads for Dominica farmers to get to their farms, providing and giving ca$h and free housing to their supporters and friends, high jacking our passport money. Why are you surprised that folks can’t afford to buy food? Frankly, at this point I’m beginning to lose respect for you. Shame

You hypocrite, why couldn’t you call upon the useless 26 ministers who are doing nothing to go do it?
You could also help them. You seem to be a very lazy individual. When you have nothing to say, it would be wise that you shut up and not expose your hypocritical ignorance. Long i have suspected that by the crap you blogg that your middlename must be scatterbrain. The do nothing day was a great success, although it came at the 11th hour. Are you surprised?

A lack of progress, from Wednesday walk to do nothing. When will dey ever learn. Unfortunately, some fail to realize that reality is not in doing nothing.

As my great grandmother would say “IF YOU HAVE NOUGHT TO DO, GO THROW STONES IN THE SEA”.

Another dismal failure. Doing the same thing but expecting different results.

No country is built by doing nothing. no successful human, business, organization or country makes any advancement by doing nothing.
But, you see, the opposition is very comfortable about doing nothing constructive since in opposition, so to them thus is cool. The government is hard at work doing all kinds of infrastructure projects to improve the image of the country as compared to what obtains around us, yet the haters can only see it one way and that is, to do nothing? We are getting millions in foreign assistance from Tax payers of other countries by them going to work every day. sometimes running 2 jobs, and the lazy bustards can only see the big picture with wooden lens by saying, guys we are so unambitious, let’s all do nothing.
My brother visiting from Canada is saying, the opposition has to develop strategy and policy and programs to be an alternative to the government but warfare and anger and combat will never get them in the seat of government.

UWP will never learn. They did not learn from their do not vote campaign. It led them out of parliament.

What benefits are there in a do not work campaign? Who will be foolish enough to abandon work, stay home, sing salam al leum and wait for Mr Abdulla to bring money for them? Dominicans? No, I don’t think so.

“If I stay home or go to work and do nothing’, who is going to pay me for doing nothing?”……..this is my problem with those with the most to lose. She has so much to lose but will not make the sacrifice for the same children future. I am sure they will eat because they have a father and relatives. That selfish, self centered, cowardice is what has emboldened the cabal over the years.

I myself will continue to do NADA, Nothing, En-yeah until such time that the cabal falls. All I am waiting for is the coming DPSU national strike. Hopefully balls-less “Peetah” will not change his mind. And, if he does I am joining the Hilary Campaign and to hit the streets, staying there for as long as needed. So “Peetah” needs to coordinate with Hilary because word on the street is “we joining Hilary” because he is a no nonsense guy with big cahunas.

There should be a clear plan to let Starboy of stupidity know that his time is up. So do nothing and massive protests from this day on should be part of the plan. In fact the pressure should have continued from the successful big meeting of last week so by this week the police should be joining us. But to start a fire with no plans of getting the food cooked is a waste.

The politicians need us to vote for them. Are you public officers satisified with no salary increases, while ex govt ministers are getting a salary. when you do nothing it means there can’t be change. when you protect your job, what about your children? They will lose their rights when the time is ready. I don’t know how one can still feel happy living in this country with so much potential and we are so poor and lack basic ammenities….. smh

This do nothing day makes no sense. I am a very strong supporter of UWP but to call a do nothing day and probably go back to work is just pure crap and putting supporters in a position to be victimized more by the corrupt dictator. The call to do nothing was good but in my opinion there should be roadside meetings followed by more action that are legal. The temperature is burning hot and you can tell people are ready to tell the dictator that enough is enough but alas the people need leadership

I guess the UWP supporters are still trying to understand this idiotic call by party leaders to do no work. Fortunately they have characters like Ibo France to lift their spirits and absentee political leader Thompson Fontaine silently cheering them on from his residence in South Sudan.

Those asking to DO NOTHING ON MONDAY bread is well buttered. Edison and Lennox are drawing for doing NOTHING. THEY are asking others to do nothing and expect them to get paid for doing NOTHING. What a shame by an x prime minister. And a selfish opposition leader. Matt said on Q95 you can stay home for 2 days and get paid without a medical certificate from a doctor. When you stay home and do nothing and expect to get paid, hope when payment is delayed you don’t complain.

DNO, I want to applaud you for beating the concrete sidewalks and interacting directly with the commoner to get his/her views.

All the differing opinions were reasonable even though I disagree with some of them. I respect all for their opinions.

People are generally fearful of novel ideas. They are chickenhearted about the unknown consequences their actions may cause.

Again DNO, I hope you will go into the streets, to government offices, to the farms, at people’s homes and bring the objective truth and the people’s viewpoints and sentiments on issues which affect the country. Respect!

Bro let’s be real here, this “campaign” is so dumb I find it hard to believe that this is a genuine effort by the UWP. This has to be some kind of inside job by the Labour party to make UWP look stupid because I cannot believe that this is the political strategy that they decide to roll with.

I agree with the opposition on a lot of the issues they have with the government but this isn’t a viable strategy IMO. btw I know several people who support the opposition VOCALLY and they were all at work today, there is barely anybody who is even talking about this.
