Dominica ends 2023 campaign for Women’s Gold Cup Tournament with loss to Suriname

Starting 11 in Sunday night’s match against Suriname

Goal Keeper Dymond Daniel had her moment to shine, as Dominica culminated its 2023 campaign for Concacaf’s Women’s Gold Cup Tournament.

Daniel was part of the team’s Starting 11 for the Suriname versus Dominica crucial away match in the Road to W Gold Cup Sunday night at Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium. She registered six saves, including saving two consecutive shots by Suriname’s Stekkinger Shamaira in the 55′, from a penalty shot and shot on goal. In spite of some incredible saves for the 15-year-old goalie, the Dominica women were unable to get goals in the back of their opponent’s net. They conceded to 7 goals in the first half of play.

However, the Nature Isle ladies plied on the pressure in the second half. In the 50′, Dominica’s first substitution–Kennisha Jno Lewis–entered the game in the right midfield position, while Ezra Elwin exited. The second substitution for Dominica was Kimra Joseph, who got a break off bench in the 70′ to play for the first time in this tournament. China Tulloch left the field at that point. Captain Romelcia Phillip also exited the pitch in the 71′, while Rosalinda Paul came on. The substitutes enhanced the Dominica ladies fighting spirit on the pitch. At the end of game time, the scoreline was 11-0 in favor of Suriname.

Of the six matches Dominica played in the 2023 Road to W Gold Cup, the team drew against Antigua & Barbuda in its home match and won its away match against Antigua & Barbuda in October. Its home and away matches against Guyana, and home match against Suriname resulted in a loss. Starr Humphreys remains the top goal scorer for the team in this tournament.
