Dominica Football Association announces scholarship in honour of tragic passing of Norran Jno Hope and Kirt Hector

President of the Dominica Football Association (DFA), Glen Etienne has announced that a young lady or boy of La Plaine will be presented with a scholarship in honour of former national football coach, Kirt Hector, and national player Norran Jno Hope.

The two men lost their lives during a tragic accident on Friday, April 19, 2013, when the vehicle in which they were travelling, plunged into a gorge created by erosion from heavy rain on the Pont Casse road.

Etienne made the announcement while addressing villagers of La Plaine during a candlelight vigil held on Wednesday, marking the 10th anniversary of their death.

“I know there is a monument…yes they have gone, but more needs to be done so that the kids of tomorrow can remember that these guys were national players,” he said. “From the DFA standpoint, we will recognize or give a scholarship to a young lady or a young boy of La Plaine in the name of Kirt and Norran.”

According to Etienne, persons who have made significant contributions should be commemorated.

“It is nice to be present here tonight to celebrate the remembrance of both Kirt and Norran,” he stated. “Some persons have done so much that we need to remember what they have done.”

Etienne recounted that at the time of the accident, he was in Panama and only found out about the incident through e-mail following inquiries he received about the Dominican footballers.

He said about their tragic death, “It’s something that’s going to be with us as long as we are surviving,”

Etienne remembers the two as “very good people”.

“These are the memories and they will always be there,” he said. “I hope it’s not just a memory of today, because when persons have done so much I think they need to be recognized…”
