Dominica poised to win girls basketball champioship at Windward Secondary Schools Games

Dominica could emerge as the basketball champion of the 2019 Windward Islands Secondary School Games currently being played here when they meet Grenada in the deciding game.

St. Vincent will play St. Luica in the first game at 6:00 p.m. while at 8:00 p.m., Dominica will put its undefeated record on the line against Grenada.

In the Track and Field events on Wednesday, a Grenadian female athlete shattered two records as the Grenadians continue to show their dominance in track and field. When the competition continued at Windsor Park Sports Stadium yesterday, the Grenadian athlete stole the spotlight, breaking the girls shot put record and shattering the old record which stood at 13. 02 meters. She set a new mark of 14.22 meters. She then set a new mark in the girls discus event breaking the old mark of 38.5 meters and set a new record of 41.45 meters.

The St. Vincent boys team cut two tenths of a second off the 4 x 100 meter record. The old mark was 41.8 seconds and they broke the record by running 41.6 seconds to secure a gold medal.

Grenada are currently lead the point standings with 305 points while their nearest rival, St. Lucia finished in 2nd place with 247 points. St. Vincent placed third with 206 points and host country Dominica has 148 points.

So far Dominica has received 1 gold medal, 4 silver medals and some bronze medals.

Persistent showers at Benjamin Parks in Portsmouth last night prevented the continuation of the basketball games. Grenada were leading St. Vincent 13 to 11 in the first quarter of the boys basketball game when that match was stopped due to the rain. The second match between Dominica and St. Lucia was postponed because of the rain.

The organisers have rescheduled the games to this afternoon from 3:00 p.m. at Benjamin’s Park. The games are also continuing today with basketball, football and volleyball.

Dominica will be playing St. Lucia in girls volleyball at Benjamin’s park from 8:30 a.m. Grenada will then face St. Vincent at 10:00 a.m. in football also at Benjamin’s park.

St. Lucia will face Grenada at 2:00 p.m.  and at 4:00 p.m. , Dominica will be in search of their first win when they face St. Vincent.

The Games started on Sunday July 28, 2019 and will run until August 4, 2019.
