International publication, The Travel, has ranked Dominica as the third most affordable destination to retire in the Caribbean.
The publication examined seven Caribbean destinations and ranked them based on the average monthly cost of living with figures, it said were taken from the World Population Review.
“The total population numbers have been taken from Worldometers, while the percentage of the population over 65 years old is from Knoema. The average monthly rent for an apartment outside the city center has been sourced from Numbeo,” it explained.
In its article, The Travel stated that the Caribbean is a fantastic region for retirees to locate.
“Its proximity to the United States and strong air travel network make it easy to travel through,” the publication said. “While the Caribbean is often seen as an expensive place to live, there are several destinations that are easy on the wallet. As such, we are taking a look at seven affordable Caribbean islands that are perfect for retirement. First on the list was the Dominican Republic, followed in second place by Jamaica. Placing third, Dominica is, according to The Travel “a paradise for expats seeking a tranquil and picturesque setting.”
“This small island nation is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including lush rainforests, majestic waterfalls, and pristine beaches,” the article said.
“Living in Dominica offers expats the chance to immerse themselves in a vibrant culture and a close-knit community. The island’s laid-back lifestyle and welcoming locals create a warm and inviting atmosphere for retirees looking to enjoy their golden years in a peaceful and scenic environment.”
The publication stated that based on statistics by the World Population Review, the monthly cost of living in Dominica is US$856 while the average monthly rent for a one-room residence is US$360.
Also on the list were Trinidad & Tobago (cost of living per month, US$979), Grenada (cost of living per month, US$1,178), St Kitts & Nevis (cost of living per month, US$1,145), and St Lucia (cost of living per month, US$1,153).
OK could someone be kind enough to inform me as to the two nations that merit 1st 2nd places it will be most appreciated cheers
The biggest pot hole i saw is when I came to Queens NY in 1989. There are people in NY who has to go to soup kitchen to get a meal and one in five children go to bed hungry in the US
I have been to DR outside the resorts can be scary. But they made $15b usd from tourism. Dominica made $0.11b usd. High end tourism and proper tax collection can benefit the country in the long term.
Hi, Seniors need Health Care, À good Social Security, extra vouchers to assist to évents, stay in hôtels, eat in restaurants, get easy access to public places beaches, rivers etc…
Or I Do Not see anything like that. I AM myself a sénior and I Will not recommend Dominica to Seniors who have cardiac problems and long sickness disease. Though I LOVE Dominica, I am living in the island since 1995, You have to be strong to live there. If you target the Island as a retirement paradis, then organize a special niche for Seniors, Then we can talk…….
You have to be strong to live anywhere, not just Dominica only, unless you want to be a bum and you will end up in a slum. Every tub aff to sit on its own bottom and every man aff to stand on its own two feet.
Too bad, you don’t seem to get it, but that’s the problem.
You are absolutely right. Not a place for a sick or feeble person.
That MEME is just a complete Jacka.Best place to RETIRE.That mean things are cheaper in Dominica including rent which is true in the USA the minimum wage is higher but the take home pay is lower, dollar for dollar.A $2,500,000 house in Dominica is a palace.A $2,500,000 house in the USA is nothing. It the USA a $600 rent is a room,in Dominica a $600 rent is a one bedroom house, not a room.Your liar and overeducated Jacka.Home grown fruits and vegetables are cheaper in Dominica, that is why so many people from England build and retire in Dominica.
This is so true for people who worked oversead and looking fir some where to retire. Hence, that survey did not include dominicans who work and retire here!!
Who does that Jacka call we,You are struggling because you are too lazy to work. There are hundreds of foreigners employed on various projects in Dominica.Jamaicans,Trinidadians,Grenadians .St.Lucians ,Vincentians,Spaniards,Chinese and Haitians, while you sit doing nothing and complaining all day.LAZY.
And expect to get money from the USA every month and a barrel. If you can’t send it you are not good family. You make all the enemy in the fam. Truth said
Tell that to them Mr.Putin.Issa expand.Fresh market.SMart.Do it Center.Muslim store.Thousands line up to pay their electricity bill every month without delay.Same for internet and water.Every child above 5 years has a cell phone with a plan.More than 39,000 registered vehicles out of a population of 72,000.The blue do nothing’s has to complain because they sit on their blue lazy butt and do nothing.Go and toofay.
I would agree that Dominica is one of the best places on earth to retire and invite all those who chose to so do. However, as a born Dominican who regularly visits, I will not do so UNTIL there’s a PROPER HEALTH CARE SYSTEM and a reliable electricity supply. Dominican Republic came in first ?? Having lived there for 3 years with constant electricity outages, I would never even THINK of spending my golden years there. Almost every household has an “inverter” that’s batttery propelled. And don’t talk of the robery and murder rate. So their source of information must be flawed or they’re deliberately inviting seniors to an unhappy retirement :mrgreen.
But again, every man to his own order; one man’s meat is another man’s poison.
The picture only shows the roofs of those buildings in Roseau but not the dilapidated condition of the roads in Roseau. I’ll spend my retirement on rooftops in Roseau.
Tell that to the locals who cannot survive without having to chew the PM pocket every month end!
While that may be the case, we also have to consider the standard or living, lack of services and amenities, lack of financial service and hardly any ATM;s. While the island as a whole is good for retirees, we have to understand that YOU NEED MONEY to live here, otherwise, you will be stuck in a poor island that really has nothing much to offer these days. I lie, we have lots to offer, but its not what u may expect.
For your information, you need money anywhere you are to live and survive. So, what is your point? Retirees in America are complaining they are not receiving enough social security to continue living up to their standards and continue living ever so happily. Some come out of retirement looking for a job to augment their social security monthly check. Stop bashing on Government and understand the realities around the world. You believe that it is only in Dominica that people are struggling? People are struggling everywhere, even in big America. Life is what you make it to be. Do not let Ibo France fool you all Dominicans. There are a lot of people in Dominica who live better off than a lot of Americans do, including West Indians in America. Agin, life is what you make it.
ds, you are 100% on target and also intelligent person, I have traveled around to many places while on actives and I can tell you right now under Pm Skerrit, Dominica is in a much better place than some other places I have been to, having said that I got the shock of my life when I visited some Dominicans in NY USA it looks like the American
so-called dreams did not heard of them b*****ds but having the nerve to criticising Pm Skerrit, saying that ugly lenny, would have done a better job ha ha ha what a joke 😃 😀 😄
If you are comparing USA they receive a check sometimes greater than 2400.00 US. They receive Medicare and some medicaid If they work well aND SAVE PROPERLY they have a hefty some in their 401K where the company match at least 6 percent. Being 65 I would say your house should be paid for. They provide free transportation. Seniors have a choice to live in a luxury apt with little contribution if you are broke. I would not compare Dominica to the uSA at no time. Seniors do better here to me. Just me saying
@Just Saying, I am not comparing USA to Dominica you bloody idiot learn to read my language OK!
I visit Dominica
it is not trinidad or jamaica for night life. but it is excellent for eco tourism. jamaica is all music, party drink and eat big pool parties. Dominica is quiet and relaxing. let us say, senior management comes to relax in Dominica)spent more) and the employees go to DR or jamaica or Bahamas
and Dominica cannot live there. The US dollar working as the United States Foreign policy intended – for US citizens to be able to get cheaper goods outside the United States – it worked for them. The citizens cannot afford to live a proper life the only thing is to cater towards tourism and the people with theirs already and no way to create our own from scratch when stop coming we fall down.
What about the costs of staying in hotels for people who plan on staying for a few weeks.
The cost of staying in any hotels around the world is not cheap one night or a few weeks as you put it, and anyway who the hell wants to stay in a hotel for a few weeks unless you’re homeless.
where is the actual link to the publication? that would be nice
Why is the sample so small? JUST 7 COUNTRIES? Are you all trying to FOOL me? In any research project, or individual study, this is already a “darn” FAILURE. I have lived in Guyana, Jamaica, Antigua, St Lucia and Guadeloupe. It’s more affordable to live in all those countries than in Dominica because the weekly, fortnightly or monthly earnings are higher.
US$856 = EC$2312. How many Dominicans earn this amount per month?Yah with EC$2312.00, you can buy groceries for the month if it’s a very small family of 2 or 3.
Compare it with EC$300.00 which Skerrit gives to elderlies, while he takes EC$64000.00 for himself, then you’ll see what most Dominicans are going through.
Dominica will soon become an expat country, because locals are running away from the hardship.
In the other countries the monthly earnings of the citizens are higher by a very long margin, compared to what is earned in Dominica. One can also be doing more than ONE job in the other countries.
FAKE and FALSE…
Read and understand before you comment. Why do we always have to include politics in everything we post? The article clearly said “RETIRE” meaning folks who are no longer working and living off their pension/social security.
@MEME, is that 64000.00 a month? or a year if so bless him it’s not enough for all the work he’s putting in he deserves much more 👏
is this a trick?
de government pays $63,000 (US$23,000) a month for Skerrit rental arrangements!
these are just pretty words……sounds wonderful eh
FAKE NEWS!!!!
This will not cause civil servants to qualify for a raise in salaries
Rest in Peace, Daniel and Dominique.
Tell that to the people who are broke 5 days after they get their little monthly salary.
@Zandoli, you must be joking, l am broke 10 minutes after getting my state and military pensions what are you on about now, you should try leaving in the real world and stop talking crap along with UWP arrogant supporters which I think you are not.
Dominica is surely affordable for millionaires and billionaires. But what about the ‘comfortability index’?
Affordability for the affluent is only one factor. However, there are other important factors like healthcare, entertainment, access to reliable electricity, water, Internet, proper infrastructure, et cetera. All of these are below par in Dominica when compared to other territories in the region.
Living in Dominica for thousands of those who have no other choice is insufferable. Born and bred Dominicans are leaving the country in drove. Large pockets of Dominicans can be found all over the world – Antigua, Guadeloupe, St. Kitts, U.S., England, etc. The country is suffering from depopulation and a brain drain. These are all signs of a decrepit place.
Let me educate you a bit. I have a lot of friends from Jamaica and Trinidad in America, and they complain about the same economic situation in their own country. People continue to suffer wherever they live, some when they come to America and see reality, they say, boy, it is best I had stayed back home. Life is tough in America. Ibo, my question for you is, what do you intend doing to ameliorate the economic situation in Dominica and the rest of the Caribbean? Dominicans who live in other islands suffer the same fate as Dominicans living in America, in New York. I live in America, I live in Antigua, I live in Barbados. That is just name calling. Go and see where they live and how they live. They are no better than Dominicans they left back home. You will be surprised to know that there are Dominicans in New York living in the subways. Looks like the big Apple gone dry. The only thing left is its rotten seed. Ibo, come better than that and stop writing bull dust.
Yes, for the rich expats and foreigners who come down to retire of course, but for the local man we are struggling….
Not all expats and foreigners come to Dominica with a lot of money. Some return because it was always their dream to return. They invest in the country and try to help others where possible. However, the attitude of some people make it difficult for them by thinking they have money and charging double the amount of money for everything, leaving them to also struggle. Remember, being rich or poor is a mindset. What is your mindset? If it’s not working for you, then change it and stop blaming others. Just be positive.
Hopelessness has gripped the whole of Dominica. Citizens, especially the young, see their future being truncated or blighted by an administration composed of vagabonds, snipers, gluttons and kleptomaniacs.
Everywhere in Dominica growth is severely stunted except for the salaries and possessions of the elitist ghost workers in Cabinet.
That is exactly what has gripped your mindset- hopelessness. You are so full of it. You talk so much and write so much that you have absolutely nothing to offer your own country and its people. You would do better for all of us if you go into hiding permanently.
The cost of staying in any hotels around the world is not cheap one night or a few weeks as you put it, and anyway who the hell wants to stay in a hotel for a few weeks unless you’re homeless.
I am sure this positive news headline has resulted in an instantaneous rise in blood pressure in some folks. Easy folks, doh toofay yet. We need you to witness more positive news from and about Dominica.
the citizenry are broke.
@Putin
Surely did not cause mine to rise? So you did not know it’s easier for expats to live here than locals?. Well my friend you are a dreamer. But this article fools you, not me. In many of the other territories, income levels are higher than in Dominica so the locals enjoy a higher standard of living. Here its just the expats and a very small percentage if greedies. Have you ever asked yourself why so many people are running away from Dominica?
What’s so great about this news? All it says is “affordable”. What about services like health and infrastructure? The cheap stuff you get at the chinese store is certainly more affordable than what you would get elsewhere but then it breaks after you use it once so just “affordable” isn’t a good metric.
Also consider that people at that age are just basically living out the rest of their life, they already made their money and have their children etc. This doesn’t say anything about the cost of living or the economic prospects for young people trying to find work or build a house, a family etc
They are running away from all the islands in the Caribbean. It is tough everywhere, not just Dominica only. When they say West Indians in America or England or Canada, they are not talking of Dominicans only. I have met other West Indians from the other islands they talk the same way we all talk. No difference. Some dislike the party in power, others dislike the opposition parties. There is no win, win. You dislike Skerrit, the same as others who dislike Keith Rowley of Trinidad, Andrew Holness of Jamaica, Phillip Pierre of St. Lucia, Ralp Gonzales of St. Vincent and so forth. So, stop bashing Skerrit as a Caribbean problem when the others are just the same. If Linton were to get into power, which he will not, he too would have opposition. Look at life in its broader sense. Skerrit is doing his best just like the others are doing and will say. Wasn’t that stupid and silly for Lennox Linton attending a high-level government meeting in Guyana a few years ago when he was never invited?
