Dominican author launches historic business training guides for MSMEs and children

Marilyn A. Cuffy-Morris

In a historic event for the Commonwealth of Dominica, the first four business training guides were launched on Wednesday, 6th December, 2023. Written by Dominican author Mrs. Marilyn A. Cuffy Morris, these guides are a significant milestone in the nation’s business education landscape.

The guides, titled “DON’T doubt yourself, just stay focused”, are aimed at individuals aged 18 and above, school leavers, youth, and current and potential micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The guides are structured in three phases: Preparation, Execution, and Expansion, covering over 200 topics to guide one in their business startup, preparation, execution, and expansion.

In addition to the guides for adults, Mrs. Cuffy Morris has also authored a simplified guide for children aged 13 to 17 years, titled “I’m a child, I’m not too young, tell me now”. This guide, another first for the Commonwealth of Dominica, is designed to introduce children to the world of business, drawing from the author’s own experiences working in her family’s micro-businesses during her childhood.

Mrs. Cuffy Morris, a native of the community of Goodwill and a seasoned business professional and educator, was raised by two hard-working parents who were both educators and ran micro-ventures. Her experiences working in various businesses, including a senior position at the National Development Foundation of Dominica (NDFD) Limited, inspired her to write these guides.

Her career in education spans several institutions, including the Roseau Boys school, Goodwill Primary School, Convent High School, Business Training Center, Dominica State College, and the University of the West Indies Open Campus.

In addition to her teaching career, Mrs. Cuffy-Morris is a prolific writer and has produced numerous manuals focusing on business development, growth, and expansion. She has also written calypso songs for primary school students, two of which won second place in competitions.

She is a qualified Project Manager, having attained the International Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). She is the holder of an Upper Second-class BSc Honors Degree in Management from the University of the West Indies, Barbados, a First-class Honors Diploma in Dietetics from the University of Technology, Jamaica and a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)from the Center for English Language Learning, UWI. She has acquired many certificates in eProject Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Procore Project Management, Risk Management, CDB and World Bank Procurement guidelines, among others.

Her business guides, titled “Don’t doubt yourself, just stay focused,” were presented to the Small Business Unit of the Ministry of Labour and the Dominica State College (DSC). Three young individuals who worked closely with her during the development of the guides were also given copies. Mrs. Cuffy-Morris hopes that her guides will foster an enabling environment for both adults and children interested in business.

The launch of these guides marks a significant step forward in business education in the Commonwealth of Dominica, providing valuable resources for both adults and children interested in entrepreneurship.

Thanks everyone for your likes and support. Most appreciated.

I thank the good Lord for gifting me the foresight and the knowledge to prepare these four (4) Business Training guides for MSMEs and children. It was a long, long difficult road but with the guidance of the Creator and my family, I was able to achieve my goal.

This is my contribution to enhancing the business climate in the Commonwealth of Dominica and worldwide, not just for potential and present MSMEs, but for our young children between the age of 13 to 17 years old as well.

My father, who was also an entrepreneur, inspired me to write, coupled with my experience working with MSMEs over the years. I welcome your full support.

Let us build Dominica together. My suggestion to you is if you want to do something, “Start. Just start and you WILL finish. Be consistent and you WILL achieve your goal”.

    Blessings all.
