Dominican children help celebrate birthday of Venezuelan hero

Some thirty children, most of them Dominicans, on Thursday, joined Venezuelan Ambassador Hayden Pirela, in celebrating the 230th anniversary of the birthday of Venezuelan military leader and hero, Simon Bolivar.

Bolivar played a key role in the Spanish American fight for independence.

Although the observance was held on Thursday July 25, this South American hero was actually born on July 24, 1783.

The children were treated to a large cake and had fun knocking candies out of a piñata both of which were provided by Ambassador Pirela (a piñata is typically a colorful papier-mâché animal (or some other shape), with a hollow cavity filled with candy or small toys and treats.)

The Ambassador also related the story of Simon Bolivar to the children.

The children who attended the event are participants of a three week summer programme, conducted by the Venezuelan embassy, which started on Monday. It provides classes for the children in Spanish, art and dance.

The children were also treated to face painting by artist, Zaimis Olmos who is one of the facilitators of the summer programme.

Below are photos taken at the event.

“Dominican children help celebrate birthday of Venezuelan hero” WHO IS THAT HERO, HUGO CHAVEZ?

WHY are VENEZUELAN CHILDREN, outside of Venezuela, NOT celebrating the birthday of their hero? They do not have a CHOICE in Venezuela, but outside of the Island they could care less.

The children are celebrating their culture, look at them, they are of Spanish heritage. Does Dominica have a hero? I’m just asking.

You better believe that. What a total disgrace to persons living in Simon Bolivar. Want to know when was the last time this Embassy ever visited this community? Why didn’t they ask the children of Simon Bolivar to participate? Is me that glad for them. SHAME SHAME SHAME on the Embassy.
