Dominican cricketer gets first central Windies contract

Alick Athanaze

Dominican cricketer, Alick Athanaze, is etching his name in West Indies cricket after he was offered his first central contract to play for the Windies team. He is among four other cricketers who received the first-time contracts which will be for the 2023 to 2024 season. The others are left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, right-handed batter Keacy Carty, and left-handed batter Tagenarine Chanderpaul.

According to the Cricket West Indies (CWI), the contracts were offered based on the performance of players during the 2022 to 2023 evaluation period following recommendations from the Selection Panels and approval by the Board of Directors. Head selector of West Indies cricket, Desmond Haynes said with a busy season ahead, the contracts clearly show the direction that regional cricket is heading.

“With a busy year of cricket ahead, in all three formats, we have held several detailed discussions with the two Head Coaches on the brand of cricket they want to play,” he stated.

“We are very clear in the direction we want to go. The players who have been offered contracts are among those who we expect to feature, as we look to build towards challenging for the top spot when we host and compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on home soil. We also have away Test Series in Australia and England – these are two major assignments whilst in the 50-over format we look to build a nucleus of players aimed towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.”

Contracts were not offered for the men’s team only but also for the women. All-rounders Zaida James and Sheneta Grimmond received contracts for the first time. West Indies Women’s Lead Selector, Ann Browne-John said, that in selecting contract players for the women’s team, emphasis was placed on the development of younger players.

“The selectors have identified a cadre of players who we believe can drive West Indies cricket forward,” she stated. “We have emphasized the development of the younger players, which we view as pivotal in the pathway to the international level. We have several high-profile bilateral series and major global events on the horizon and with this in mind, we want to have our players prepared and ready for every occasion.”

    My brother I do not know you personally but from the death of my heart I wish you well along with your family who supported you. My only request is that you not allow politics to get into your face and shake your hands. You are smart enough to see that if it were for the sake of politicians (especially to so called ones today) you would have been on the NEP rooster planting shrubs. You know and see what was done to your beautiful ground in your own village. Please do not allow any politician to obstruct you. Keep on playing your shots. The more shots you play the more your pocket will be inflated. Go for peak of it. The Mumbai Indians are watching you also. Good luck

      If Skeritt isn’t leading something you go for personal attacks. How about the geothermal contract, didn’t you say the opposition wrote the worse contract?

      Now you’re in for a solid 25 years, by which time a young 50 year old will be 75 to 100 years old before we benefit from our own electricity.

      You are a CLOWN, a very stupid one too. Your hatred of Sebo has nothing to do with cricket. You hate anyone who speaks out against Skerrit. Do you even have the concept of average? Your stupidity has me doubting. You cant even put a proper sentence together.

    Athanaze is very good at getting starts to his innings…It’s more than high time that he gets a HUNDRED…..He must not settle or feel satisfied with those mediocre scores.

    I want to see him make his first tripe digit score for the W.I. Cricket Team. He is more than capable. This would cement his position in the team. Copious blessings in all your future endeavours.

      @If we knew better
      Hodge does not deserve to be on the West Indies cricket team. His scores are too low. Not even on the South Africa tour with the “A Team”, he could get a CENTURY. His hughest score was in the 70’s.
      He is not ready yet! It’s not because he is a Dominican, i will agree with your comment….Even Athanaze himself is forming the FOOL with so many goods starts, but ZERO hundred……
