Dominican wins Montserrat calypso competition

Montserrat calypsoDominican Wallace Baptiste, a new comer to the calypso circuit in Montserrat, has won a major calypso competition in that country.

Baptiste, the only new comer to make to it to the finals, won over the crowd and judges to take the Montserrat Festival 2013 calypso crown.

His two upbeat tunes, Dracula and Who Will It Be were impregnated with lyrics and performed to the satisfaction of a large and energetic crowd at festival village in Little Bay.
Both songs were written and arranged by veteran local calypsonian, Cecil “Lord Cepekee” Lake.
Baptiste walked away with keys to a Lexus car, cash prizes, and a trophy for the best newcomer.
Baptiste earlier this month won the Soca Monach competition with Dracula.

The man calls himself Babtiste. Simple.

in relation to soca winning a calypso show, the comments are a bit uneducated as he had two proper song that had a good beat. The songs spoke to the judges as loudly and as eloquently as it did to the masses. In fact it was a departure from poor ballad singing in this competition.

He won Soca Monarch, Calypso King, Road March and Best Newcomer.

The population is still below 5k, and the UK Government continues to support it heavily.

The Calypso prizes are through fund raising and donations.

I am a Dominican living on Montserrat. Think I know enough.

work it out for calypso finals let say we have a crowd of about 5000 at $50 we have a grand total of $250 000 plus other form of income collected during the show remember the semi finals so i guessed the calypso association is making an average income of about $1000000 per season might be more but not less so they can afford to give more but as i know we Dominicans always like to make a 500% profit go to the stores

How did he win Soca Monarch with a calypso or how did he win a Calypso competition with a Soca? Are the two the same?
Congrats to the young fellow but the masses should not be confused in that way, only in the Caribbean.
A Lexus is the prize? Whoy

That’s the same thing I was musing on. Their population is about 1/4 that of Dominica.

        December 31, 2013

On a point of correction: Montserrat’s population is about 5000 (4922 according to the 2011 census), that is only about 7 per cent of Dominica’s population.

      • Mojo1
        January 1, 2014

In reality it receives about 25, million in budgetary support. considering they are building a new city from scratch, that not too much.
