DPSU formally submits proposal to government

DPSU General Secretary, Thomas Letang

General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang, has revealed that the organization has formally submitted its proposal to government for salary increase for 2018 – 2021.

In November, Letang stated that the union’s membership had agreed upon a union proposal to be sent to the government.

The proposal entails a 10% salary increase, and a one-time bonus which is equivalent to two month’s salary.

“Since our last meeting— that’s our general meeting— where we discussed with the membership our proposals, we have also had some more discussions with certain disciplines in the public service; for example, pharmacists, medical officers and others. And as a result of that… the proposal remains the same thing. Where we have seen some changes is in terms of certain allowances, with respect to certain disciplines,” he explained.

The DPSU boss went on to say, “For example, the medical people are asking for some other allowances, the pharmacists are asking for allowances, but basically things remain the same in terms of the level of increase that we are asking [for], which is about 10% increase over the three years and a one-time payment which is equivalent to two month’s salary for the first year.”

A 10% increase over the next three years averages a mere 3.3% increase per year. This increase does nothing for public servants in the lower bracket. It’s egregious! I know getting this authoritarian regime to improve the lot of the working poor public servants is synonymous with squeezing water out of stones. The government’s strategy is to keep the masses poor so that they would come begging for handouts. In that way, these mendicants would feel eternally grateful to the dictatorial regime. The diabolical ruling administration views the people not as human beings to be assisted but as votes to be had. Even though the union is asking for a miniscule increase in pay, bet your life that this ungodly government will fight vehemently against these paltry requests. Almost anything to improve the hellish lives of the least among us, this government puts insurmountable obstacles in the way. They must be shown the edit door on election day. They are undeserving of even another day in…

DNO I thought that increase in salaries , bonus and other financial benefits depended on profit in the private sector and increase in current revenue in the public sector (government). With a reduction in current revenue in the government sector caused by 3 calamities, how can people expect to get a raise from them. Have someone lost their reason. Can you see the ploy similar to May 29, 1979. Opposition forces are just determined to produce mayhem, chaos and anarchy for Christmas. CCM and Athie and a radio station playing Rush Lumbar did not succeed. Now an agent of opposition forces in is usual diabolical manner is trying to jolt Dominica.

Trust me that one time bonus blocks lots of holes, since the increase makes not difference to those of us in the lower brackets…cant take us to the bank.

Max it is not about any raise. It is about political grandstanding for personal public attention. Everyone know that after Mathew, Erica and Maria recurrent revenue is in deficit . Like a wise man once said, you cannot get blood from a stone.
