Consultant psychiatrist at the Acute Psychiatric Unit of Dominica China Friendship Hospital, Dr. Nadia Wallace, has issued a compelling call to action in addressing mental health in Dominica.
As the global community prepares to observe World Mental Health Day on October 10th, Dr. Wallace has emphasized the urgent need to prioritize mental health in the workplace, recognizing it as an essential component of occupational health and safety.
She made the remarks at a press conference last week, to announce the staging of Mental Health Week from the 6th to the 12th of October this year.
This year’s theme, “It is time to prioritize mental health in the workplace,” highlights the critical importance of creating safe and healthy work environments. Dr. Wallace pointed out that such environments are fundamental rights that can significantly reduce tension and conflict, improve staff retention, and enhance job performance and productivity.
World Mental Health Day, established by the World Federation of Mental Health in 1992, serves as a platform to enhance understanding, raise awareness, and facilitate action on mental health issues. This year, the community mental health team and the acute psychiatric unit will focus on the integral connection between mental health and work, underscoring the theme’s relevance.
Dr. Wallace’s insights are particularly timely, as mental health issues such as depression and anxiety continue to be pervasive globally, impacting productivity, attendance, and overall performance. With 60% of the world’s population engaged in work, and a significant portion of working-age adults experiencing mental health disorders, the economic impact is profound. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these issues, with 12 billion working days lost annually to depression and anxiety, costing the global economy $1 trillion in lost productivity.
According to Dr. Wallace, work is a social determinant of mental health, and meaningful work can promote positive mental health, prevent mental health conditions, and aid in recovery and inclusion. Conversely, she pointed out, poor working conditions can worsen mental health or exacerbate existing conditions and stigmatization, discrimination, and exclusion of individuals with mental health conditions in the workplace remain significant challenges. Many employers are reluctant to hire individuals with mental health conditions, and workers often hesitate to disclose their conditions or seek help due to fear of negative career consequences.
The consultant psychiatrist stressed that mental health at work is a human rights issue and everyone has the right to the highest attainable standard of mental health and a safe and healthy work environment. To uphold these rights, she’s calling for effective policies and actions to improve mental health at work, and employment laws to adequately protect and support individuals who disclose mental health difficulties. Dr. Wallace argues that while employment is generally positive, certain working patterns, such as long hours, night shifts, and insufficient rest periods, can be detrimental to health.
Her call to action is clear: it is time for employers and policymakers to recognize and address mental health as a critical aspect of occupational health and safety.
As part of Mental Health Week activities, there will be a Zoom presentation to the Human Resource Departments of various businesses in Roseau on October 10th, Mental Health Day. Sports Day will be held on Friday, October 11th, and a mental health day for staff will be observed on Saturday 12th October.
I am looking for anyone who would be willing to form an organization to assist in investigation and reporting of mental health fraud and abuse in Dominica.
To draft policy concerning abuse and fraud. Properly investigate and willing to go all the way to assist persons who have been harmed.
To assist even persons incarcerated as well as those in the hospital and elsewhere.
To be a voice for those who are being abuses due to fraud and medicated, restrained.
Those interested email [email protected]
and we can arrange zoom and go forward with contacting organizations that are concerned about mental health fraud and abuse and illegally medicating persons the elderly, and others.
Mental health fraud is a thing, and it is very difficult to investigate and prosecute. So we need watchful eyes.
I hope she is understanding what mental health fraud is.
We know what is going on at the hospital.
Hopefully you are not one engaging in the hospitals and assisting in what is going the hospital.
I know for a fact that the hospital was involved in a lot.
Cold era torture techniques and strategies under the guise of mental health.
A thorough investigation of the hospital should be done including the mental health people as well as Vince Henderson wife.
Is Nadia Wallace jumping on people yet? I f so speak up. Don’t be afraid, there is help out there.
I hope that individuals will join in to have a body that will be there to ensure the safety of citizens and in case of abuse to be able to defend people.
we have to be able as a people based on what is going to be able to secure people’s rights from mental health abuse.
Also put things in place for revoking people license when they are caught.
We have to be on the look out for mental health fraud cases…
These people need a the help and attention they could get. Our society is so insensitive and cruel. Instead of helping these most vulnerable people, we tease, mock and deride them.
The elderly, mentally challenged, poverty stricken, abused children need our love, attention and assistance most. However, too many Dominicans see them as a menace to society.
