$30 LPG on the way

(DNO) Dominicans have been promised cheaper LPG through an initative between the governments of Dominica and Venezuela.

General Manager of Petro Caribe Francisco Gonzalez, told today’s launching of the Petro Caribe LPG that PDV Dominica is designed to give the country some measure of control over its petroleum supply.

He said PDV focuses on supplying products to the Dominican people at an affordable price.

“This plant is operated by PDV Dominica and it is a joint venture between the Dominica National Petroleum Company and PDV. It is a concrete manifestation of cooperation between two nations in the area of energy,” he said.

Meantime Public Works Minister Rayburn Blackmore says Petro Caribe represents a comprehensive program which emanates practical social projects in Dominica.

Blackmoore represented Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit at the official launching.

He said the price of the Petro Caribe LPG, will remain at a fixed price of 30 dollars in every community on the Island from today.

“When we speak and talk about taking Dominica to the next level we are serious,” he said.

Who sells 20 pounds of LPG for $60? It is actually a crime to sell more than the Government’s regulated price.

Obviously you are living on Mars! LPG and other oil based products such as diesel, unleaded and Kerosene that are sold on the island is regulated by the same Government that is now underpricing local companies.

Blackmore, one week before the December General Election, Petro Caribe gave some elderly persons free LPG. The company was not yet producing LPG. People are suspicious. So PM, Blackmore and Austrie, Dominicans would like to know where did that LPG come from? Because six months after elections, Petro Caribe is now launching Petro Caribe LPG and announcing sale of the product. Was it then a ploy to influence Dominicans? Some activities do not just pass all the people just like that all the time. There are many, many wise Dominicans on island and in the diaspora.

Is the Minister of Energy responsible for Petro Caribe, or is it another Minister? If no, why? Isn’t Petro Caribe about Energy? Austrie promised the people of Jimmit, at a Petro Caribe function, to erect a playing field for children where the rubbish dump was previously located. The people are waiting patiently. Just a reminder in case you all forget.

The Governement is the sole authority responsible for regulating the prices of all petroleum products (LPG,Gasoline,Diesel,Kerosene) being sold in Dominica. Why are these same ministers who are very much aware of the policies, trying to make it look like there is someone else to blame for the prices we are currently paying for these products. Before, Government used to subsidise prices of these products, so that these prices did not fluctuate. When the Roosevelt Douglas administration came into office they stop the subsidising and said that they were setting prices based on market rates so why now there is a want to put the blame on the private sector players in the industry for the prices being paid for these products. Venezuela as part of OPEC cannot offer us a different price from any other supply from OPEC. The petroleum products we are currently receiving comes from Trinidad another OPEC country, whose prices for these products are the same as Venezuela’s. So the question is why is government Subsidising or setting better prices for Petro Caribe and not offering the same prices to the private sector players in the industry. Any government’s aim should be to grow an industry and by extension the economy, it should not be to cripple the private sector players by blaming them for the current prices of petroleum products and offering better prices to Petro Caribe. This is a prime example of unfair trading.
