Advancements ongoing to achieve Millennium Development Goals

Alvin Bernard

Within the next three years Dominica will achieve Universal Tertiary Education in keeping with its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Alvin Bernard, during a meeting with the press on Wednesday, suggested that the island has the potential and is on track to achieving a lot more MDGs before the 2015 target date.

The junior minister cited some achievement to date, which includes the attainment of Universal Secondary Education and what he described as the “sharp” reduction of poverty levels from 39.0 percent in 2002 to 28.8 percent in 2009.

“Government is working towards less than 15 percent by 2015,” Bernard cheerfully announced.

Additionally, Dominica has recorded a 24.1 percent per capita income, moving from $11,430.00 in 2005 to $14,184.00 in 2008.

“The Government of Dominica will not remain complacent and will continue to work towards an improved quality of life, not only to achieve the MDGs, but beyond them,” Bernard stated.

If Dominica wants to achive MDG goal , we do not need more schools what we need is
1, all schools in dominica to have same syllabus nation wide and in all levels
2, syllabus should be changed every 5 years for a upgrade so the books can be passed on
3, investigation should be launched why the price of text books is so high (this is preventing poor people children from going to school)
there are many more points but these are most important will not cost any money to state

on the second issue of recuction of poverty. What i dont understand is in last 15 years we in dominica have not seen much investment in the country that can create serious jobs, Agriculture is down, tourisim is down , remitincy is down and the list of things are down AND THE POVERTY IS DOWN MIGHT BE I WENT TO UNI VER CITY

On the issue number three. The capital income rise came because the minimum wage was raised from $2.00 to $4.00 that is 100% for the private sector not ever body pays minimum wage that is why yoU got the raise of 24% the figure that does not mean any thing because rising inflation rise in social security bus fair raise by all most 50% fuel by 40% electricty by 50% and the list goes on and on so 24% increase in capital income is gone
