The Belles Water Supply Project is now at an advanced stage and residents in that area should see it completed by June 2015.
This is according to parliamentary representative of St. Joseph, Kelver Darroux.
The project is being funded via loan financing and estimates for the tendered works are EC$4,550,000, including $1,854,651.20 for Lot 1 and EC$2,695,348.80 for Lot 2.
It consists of two storage tanks, one capable of holding 40,000 gallons of water and the other 30,000 gallons.
Lot One of the project began in August 2014 and was expected to be completed within 46 weeks.
“The work that they have undertaken involved the construction of the tanks, the roads to go to the tanks and the laying and installation of pipe work. Throughout the process a number of persons were involved in that project,” Darroux said.
Additionally, he said, work on Lot 2 involves construction associated with the laying and installation of the pumps and distribution lines and pipe fittings, which is expected to be completed in 32 weeks.
As parliamentary representative of that area, Darroux said, he is very satisfied with the work done thus far.
He went on to say that the government of Dominica remains committed to ensure that pipe-borne water can be made available to all communities in the country.
“This is a commitment that we made and have invested heavily over the years in installation of water storage facilities throughout the country,” he said. “So far we have about 95 percent of the entire country with access to pipe-borne water.”
He outlined challenges experienced during that project, “particularly in the heavy rainfall areas and during the heavy rain work was delayed and we also had the terrain at some point in time.”
“I am looking forward towards the completion of this project within the next few months when we can actually see the people of the Penrice and Belles area actually opening their pipes at their homes…,” Darroux said.
Darroux sees this project as a very important.
“In this day and age having safe, healthy water is very critical,” he stated. “And while it is true there are a number of rivers in the area of Pont Case and Belles, but one cannot take for granted that you are not certain what is happening above these water lines, so you have to be careful and ensure that people have safe drinking water.”
He continued, “And off course we have a health center in the area of Belles and a primary school and I believe these institutions would need to have a steady supply of water. So once the project is completed, we will see these institutions being brought on board so that they could have their supply of water.”
