Chief Magistrate calls for ethics in legal profession

Baptiste

Chief Magistrate Evalina Baptiste has called on Dominican lawyers to protect the image of the legal profession.

Baptiste made these remarks at the opening of the new law year on this week

She told the special sitting that ethics in the profession must be their watchword.

“They must remain professional in their practice before the court. I wish to remind them that the legal profession is an honorable one and they must at all time be honest, conduct themselves ethically and with dignity. The practice of law is regarded, not so much as a business but as a profession,” she said.

She said a counsel is under obligation to present his client loyally in a professional manner using his highest skill and knowledge but he must only use legitimate efforts to win his client’s case.

“He should at no time engineer or manufacture false case, he must be scrupulous with clients funds and maintain separate accounts for such,” she said.

That would be a step in the right direction. Now the question is who will uphold it and who will take them to task?

For some reason I don’t think this is all she wishes to say. There appears to be something more about this “ethics violations”. Lets just wait and see, cause I feel something more is about to come out about a professional lawyer, whether male or female. Don’t you think so?

Remember, if she goes too far, she may be fired. After all, this is Dominica where the judicial system is being hi-jacked by those who think that they’re above the law.

I hope the senior flamboyant QC and his col-leagues will take heed and set a good example for others to emulate. Thanks for your call–long over-due!

I wish there could be more person to speak out like you my lady. Too many times the people who are called upon to serve the population thinks off their pocket instead of the people they represent.

    Ha, if only…

Too much little bobol going on in this country you hear sah. Just the other day I heard that one lawyer was charged for something or the other and I never hear about this again. If it was a poor malayway…

Look it have one that allegedly mis-managed his client’s funds and right now he running around New York in shame. Imagine this guy could have been the Prime Minister.

The laws are ancient and broken and the lawyers just playing hoop saway with the legal system. Criminals free on the road to kill or be killed. You all getting rid of each and every person that questions the inadequacy of the legal system because the status quo benefitting all you.

All that happens is a whole heap of talk. So long people crying about passing legislation to bring the old laws up to date – nothing happening. But see how quick the politricktians pass gun laws to protect themselves.

Lady, you can talk ethics to them lawyers till your eyes turn blue, but where them lawyers there studying the huge income they going to be raking in there for the new law year there, recycling criminals through the system to make money after money, you think is ethics they studying. Dapway you.

Pray we gotta pray for this little country of ours there.

    I watchin’ still!!!

Boy they need some disciplinary actions taken against them. Who in Dominica will be fearless enough to burst that move? Who? Smoke and mirrors? More illusions?
