Despor main road to be completely rehabilitated

Prime Minister Skerrit hands over cheque to Village Council Chairman Kerry St. Hillaire

Travelling to and from the village of Despor is to be made much easier within the coming weeks.

This as Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Roosevelt Skerrit, presented a cheque to the Campbell/ Despor Village Council for the complete rehabilitation of the Despor main road.

The cheque in the amount of $325,000 was presented to the Chairman of the Campbell/Despor Village Council at a short ceremony in Despor on Tuesday, September 9, 2014.

Prime Minister Skerrit told the residents of Despor that the improvements to their road will have major economic benefits for the area.

“All the labour required, all of the skills required for this project will come from Despor and Campbell, which means therefore that that money will remain in these
communities,” he said. “The shops can get some from it when you buy from them; the farmers can get some from it when you buy from them, the buses will be paid on time… There will be many people who will get employed in here but also when you improve the roads the buses will no longer put you down up on the hill. They will come right down here and other people will come into these parts to see what we have to offer; to buy our agricultural produce and to visit us here in Despor.”

Parliamentary Representative for the Mahaut Constituency (which includes Despor) and Minister for Public Works Energy and Ports, Rayburn Blackmore, thanked the villagers for their patience and understanding. He said the handing over of the cheque is another promise made that is being kept by the Dominica Labour Party administration.

“I must say to you I’m so proud you because although some persons tried to create a situation, we never blocked the road we never demonstrated, all you did was call me now again, whenever you call me to engage me and say parl rep we know you will do it but the road is bad,” he stated. “In the Labour Party, as you have heard from the Prime Minister as you have seen in our manifestations, that we always keep our promises. Isn’t that so? Today is a practical expression of that and I want to give you the assurance that you have more to receive from the Labour Party.”

The Campbell/Despor Village Council will engage a contractor for the urgent rehabilitation and improvement of one kilometre (3,280 feet) of the Despor main road which intersects with Sylvania.

The work includes construction of 455m (1,500 feet) of tarish fibre mesh, reinforced rigid pavement measuring five metres (16 feet) wide and five inches thick. There will also be construction of 455m of slipper drain BRC reinforced measuring 50cm (1.5 feet) wide. There is also the requirement for limited earth works.

We can no longer be fooled. Do the work but we going with the UWP this time around, As for that matter that is the work of UWP We have seen the DLP in office and all their wrong doings. we cannot talk of any wrongdoing about UWP under the leadership of Lennox Linton, so we are going with workers. These negative comments have no merit. You are actually saying something negative about something positive. People that make these comments are zombies and naysayers they they don’t use their heads. IF the man is making a promise to do something after he gets elected then you can say he is campaigning or is saying things for votes but he is actually doing real things, the road is a real road, the village is a real place the people that will benefit are real people and fellow Dominicans. Allu need to lookout for the people that making promises for when the get votes… that is what allu need to be weary about, ask those same people what have they done lately?

Sounds VERY technical..! “The work includes construction of 455m (1,500 feet) of tarish fibre mesh, reinforced rigid pavement measuring five metres (16 feet) wide and five inches thick. There will also be construction of 455m of slipper drain BRC reinforced measuring 50cm (1.5 feet) wide.”….HOWEVER….. “The Campbell/Despor Village Council will engage a contractor…”.?? WHO are they going to engage? and WHO is going to guide them on their decision on who to choose? Mr. PM and Mr. Blackmore, this could well mean money down the same drain they’re going to build if an ill-equipped (knowledge + experience) contractor is chosen..!

What I do not understand is how come the prime minister is the one offering the cheque and not Blackmore. Is Blackmore I hear that had promise to finish the road. And where that money come from, how money just keep spreading out?

$325 000 for a 3280 ft road? That’s about $99.08 EC per linear foot of road. Trust me this is not enough money my people. You would be lucky if you get 1500ft of road. If this road is 16ft wide, one linear foot requires about 0.2 CY. Therefore, looking at about $500 per CY or every 5ft of roadway. I would think for a good durable road they would require grading, and placing some type of gravel base, in addition to the labor cost. Watch it Despor, unless that amount does not include material, don’t expect a whole lot of money to be flooding the village ; most of it will go to paying for material.

I am very amused at the amount of money the Labour Party Government is “throwing around” just for votes. But, they couldn’t find money to update the Voters List and have Voters ID Cards for the same election. Go figure.

I am hoping that the Government handlers wont be the ones hand picking people to work on the road. In a certain community he made a donation similar to that and one of their handlers who is not even from the community saying that as long as he has his way certain young men from that community will not work on the road. They fail to realize that the money is not that of labor party but tax payers who are supporters of the different political parties. Playing Santa Clause at all village councils inauguration.

Wait! Isn’t the Despor where UWP constructed a road joining Sylvania to Campbell 15 years ago and it was never completed?
In 1999 I drove on that road and in a shake I was in Mahaut now Skerrit come boasting about pouring concrete on the section from Sylvania to Despor?
What’s wrong with this guy? You make the people suffer for 15 years and now you come thanking them for their patience? How much more insultive can these guys be?

This is what you are saying to the people of Campbell but yet you telling Marigot people “I not giving all you any money. I want to see all you suffer” by giving the hospital project to your family. Don’t worry because the God I serve is not sleeping, cannot sleep and He will never sleep.

With all that work going around why our road sides are so bushy u can not see around the corner the trees are taller than the buses . i hope they are not waiting for something to happen first. MR SKIRRET please take some prisoners and see what u can do to clear the road sides in our lovely D ominica this cannot stay like that so use the tax payers money wisely dont try to buy people/////////

Is just give, give, give! What happen, the people of Canefield do not deserve their roads to be rehabilitated too? Have you, your ministers, a representative from the Ministry of Public Works, the Parl Rep or the Chairman ever taken a drive to see the condition and fall into the 2 & 3 feet deep pot holes?

I’m waiting for the house to house campaign for votes to begin!

I waiting to see who will win the contract.

We have major roads and secondary roads then you have what we call feeder roads and access roads. To my mind it would be more sound to link a major road with a secondary road and not a concrete access road.
This DLP government has built the most concrete access road than any previous administration. Downgrading secondary roads to mere access roads, basically reducing and limiting infrastructural growth. Now we have a backhoe operator pretending to be an engineer to build major infrastructural works in the city of Roseau.

That is the DLP legacy that is on the ground right now and visible for ALL DOMINICANS to see for ourselves.

I hope when this road is completed motorist would be able to travel from Campbell to Sylvania via the Despor main road. This road can serve as an alternate route to Pont Casse instead of the Springfield Road which is sinking.

Why did this government take so long to rehabilitate this road. I hope this is not an election gimmick like the rest of the other projects that have commenced.

“All the labour required, all of the skills required for this project will come from Despor and Cambell …….” Finally getting it Mr. PM. You do not have to back yourself into a corner by promising “all” and falling short; most will do. You missed that opportunity on the Chinese funded projects. They treated our loans like grants and short changed our truckers and workers. Hope we continue to place emphasis on employment for locals / nationals where appropriate.

The Skerrit lead government has no plans, no strategy and lacks vision in the creation of sustainable development for the poor people of Dominica.
Dominicans have become dependent on Skerrit and this corrupt government.
Despor take the cheque, it is our money and reject Skerrit and Blackmore , they are fakes in development. After election you people will still be asked to go to the RED CLINIC for more handouts from papa Skerrit.
