Dominica on track to achieve Millennium Development Goals

Dominica’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vince Henderson has told the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly General Debate in New York this week, that Dominica has made significant progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal (MDGs).

Thirteen years ago, Dominica joined other world countries and committed itself to meet the needs of the poorest within the society.

Since then Dominica, according to Ambassador Henderson, has been able to bring about significant improvements to the lives of its citizens and has attained all the MDGs within the country’s limitations.

He said despite the challenges brought about by an increasingly hostile global environment, Dominica has in fact made meaningful progress towards the achievement of the MDGs.

“We have reduced poverty and hunger by more than half; Our children, boys and girls, now have universal access to both primary and secondary education as well as expanded access to post-secondary education and training; Our girls and women are not only being treated as equals to our boys and men, but have received tremendous support to advance their conditions of living; And our elderly and children enjoy free access to public healthcare” he noted

Henderson said the Government of Dominica has accepted that it is by the development to the island’s human resource that it will be able to truly attain development that is inclusive and sustainable.

He said as a result, the government of Dominica “has kept its people at the centre of development.”

He stressed however that while we have made some progress globally, we are still far from full realization of our targets.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight international development goals that were established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000, following the adoption of the United Nations Millennium Declaration.

All 189 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations committed to help achieve these goals by the year 2015.

The goals are eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality rates, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing a global partnership for development.

Vince while your Boss is getting problems in getting a candidate for your constituency which you represented, I believe you should come down and represent the constituency again instead of you EDUCATING yourself up there and we in the constituency getting poorer & poorer. Why don’t you take one of your month salary and send it down for us in the constituency. Shame to see what you delivered at the UN you believe is what that’s on Victoria st. talking to your compadres.

The gains are true but they are due to many years of accumulative investment from previous governments mainly …little of it has to do with the investment of the recent administration. There are gaps or weakness especially in health care that this government should fix. Such as i. reduce spread of non-communicable disease etc. ii. anemia prevalence among women and children; the new baby mortality issue at the PMH.

All feeder roads around the country bad, all community roads bad, Agriculture down to its lowest, tourism we cannot say we have when we are on the list of 25 least visited countries in the world. health centers no medicines, nurses go on leave no replacement, and the list goes on and on.

Where did Mr. Henderson get those stats from. My brother when you are talking in that kind of forum you have to come with your facts and figures from statistics. When and how did we reduce poverty by half. What did the poverty assessment revealed. Jesus Mary and Joseph, what is wrong with these people. Why do you want to tell untruths to those situations. My brother look around Dominica, within the households and tell me how and when did poverty decreased. Ah Magway sar.

“Thirteen years ago, Dominica joined other world countries and committed itself to meet the needs of the poorest within the society.” (Henderson).

You, seems to specialize in using the term society, and international community; in this you latest episode, I found you exaggerating again!

For you to make the claims that Dominica joined other countries and committed itself to meet the needs of the poorest within some society, is indeed again an over statement, and simply another form of your exaggeration. Indeed in Dominica some people are receiving help, we can identify such poor people as diehard Labor Party Supporters.

Those who are uniformly dressed up in red everyday, or are forced to dressed in red whenever the need for help arises , and many times they are ignored unless some party insider bestowed their blessing on them by acknowledging them as a party solider.

However, what happens to the supporters of the other political party’s on the island, and that is in reference to Dominica. You see it is always alright to talk crap to impress people, but plenty of us knows the truth, because we know who ask for help and did not get it, and such people are the poor of the poorest!

    How about that?

The Skerrit Labor Government had a great opportunity to receive some assistance for Dominica, in my opinion Vince made a mess of things. At such a forum, Vince should have been trying to explain that as a small underdeveloped country which is affected by the world economy, Dominica would benefit from any kind of assistance from the more developed countries. But instead, the man chose to impress the world that all is well in Dominica. I wonder what was going through the minds of the Cubans, Venezuelans and Chinese who have their own economical problems are using their money to assist Dominica and to hear things are so great that Dominica can afford to give its people free medical care, reduction of hunger by fifty percent etc. Vince cannot be serious. For months Skeritt has been blaming the world economy for the disaster Dominica has found itself in, Vince is now telling the world, regardless to what you may have heard about Dominica, we are going fine..
