After 11 months of living in a communal setting, over 100 residents of Dubique, who were displaced after the passage Tropical Storm Erika, last year, have begun the process of relocating to Centre in Grand Bay.
The resettlement project includes 50 petrocasas, donated by the Venezuelan government. Some of the residents have moved in and some are in the process of moving in.
Parliamentary Representative for the Petite Savanne constituency, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, stated that through resettlement, the community was upgraded.
“Apart from spanking new settlement, the Dubique people would have really been raised to a next level,” Darroux remarked on Friday afternoon during a visit to the site. “Those of us who knew what the old Dubique looked like—a number of extended families living under one roof, so we took the opportunity to really split up the families, so to speak, making them independent, etcetera.”
He commended the Venezuelan government for their continued commitment to Dominica, despite the ongoing socio-economic and political crisis in the South-American country.
Darroux thanked the Dubique residents for their cooperation.
“I want to thank the Dubique residents for their patience and their understanding. They’ve been very cooperative,” he stated.
The Minister commented that the project is “virtually complete,” as all fifty homes have the necessary utilities, and FLOW is available. He noted that contracts for development of roads in the area have already been discussed.
Housing Minister, and Acting Prime Minister, Reginald Austrie, called the venture a “remarkable feat,” highlighting that work on the site was completed in seven months.
He referred to the project as “a fulfillment of a commitment made by the government of Dominica, to move towards the rehabilitation of the country, as quickly as possible, after Erika, both in terms of infrastructure development and human development.”
Thus, Austrie urged residents to preserve and cherish the entire development.
He stated that the total value of the project is a “pretty significant sum,” but said that the approximate value will be revealed at a later date.
Chairman of the Dubique Action for Development Committee, Raynault Alcendor, thanked the Dominican and Venezuelan governments for their action post-Tropical Storm Erika.
Alcendor promised to continue to liaise with government for the beautification of the environment, and the betterment of residents.
“Everybody is comfortable. Everybody is happy,” he commented.
In March 2016, Contractor, Chris Walter, said that the target was to build 50 houses by the end of April.
See photos below from the site visit.
Now get the residents to show their appreciation by beautifying their surroundings, plant flowers , grow a lawn , maintain clean roads , plant hedges , its theirs , cherish it , be an exemplary community .Form their own community fund that they can use to assist the community ,have their neighbourhood watch to prevent the wrong elements from destroying their efforts .
Make it a success .
Excellent job to provide housing for the people of Dubique. There is no doubt they are happy to get a brand new home. Who would not be?
As the Minister stated, take good care of them and of your environment.
I hope they were blest, to thank God for them and gratitude to the PM.
God bless you in your new home and with many years of enjoyment.
Aye, I like the set-up in photo # 7!
Nice!
What is the name of where they live now?
Did I read Centre in Grand Bay?
Mr Prime Minister one of the best THINGS you can do for the Country is to do over the WHOLE ISLAND ROADS, FIDDER ROADS included. When you do this, everything else will fall in place, because you will be taking care of all the Farmers
main problems to reach their plantations and move their produce, making it also to reach those houses you provided them
easily. And sir, do not think of only a certain area in the Country, think of the whole Country for we are all Dominicans and you are suppose to be thePrime Minister of us all regardless of who voted for you.
And I hope those of your people close to you who read this to see what truth there is in it,will be influential enough and help you to do what is right. For no produce will reach the packing houses in good condition for the markets at Home and overseas.
Better Roads, Faster Movement, Better Produce reaching their Destinations. Of course we know there is MONEY around for that.
Well said. You think the Government could own its own road asphalting fleet to keep prices down and enabling it to do more road miles, but regardless bringing the roads on the island up to standard would benefit the farmers, locals and other industries…..
Always giving advice; never suggestions. If you have to be critical, say politely, “I suggest” or “This is a suggestion.” You cannot dictate to the PM what you think should be done. It is impolite and domineering. Learn proper communication and how to address requests to the PM.
Good job Government and Parl Rep. Inspite of the heavy criticisms u all got after Tropical Storm Erika, we are now reaping great rewards. Let them continue to talk….Doctor Darroux your hard work will not go unnoticed and words cannot xpress how happy the Dubique residents are…I just wish the people of Petite Savanne were just as understanding as Dubique residents…patience my people…things are progressing…surely….THANK GOD FOR SKERRIT!!
Well done PM and the Government of Dominica. Thank you to the Government and People of Venuezuela. Happy for the people of Dubique.
Now I understand the reason for the verbal attack recently on the Housing Minister. They realized that the people of Dominica will see the working of a very good government that the opposition cannot hold anything too, so they attack.
Thanks and Praise to the Lorc above who watches over us on earth.
i am really happy for the residents. this is surely an economic boost for them considering their previous status. I do hope that they will be abje to maintain themselves at least.
great job #DLP #VENEZUELA Goverment
Yes I big bro…we doing the do!….despite the endless setbacks…we delivered as always…Superior!… The houses look fabulous…..all the superior and CCL CREW….round of applause….
It looks great! Hats of to you PM. Looks like they got new stuff too.
In seven months the government has proven its ability to deliver on its promise the good people of Dubique. This is a sign once again that the leadership of prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit has proven to be sound and true. Many tried to distract and detract the people of this community by telling them that government was never going to assist them. It was good to see the patience of the people and to see that our government is building back better. These housing units are so far more comfortable than what some of these people lived in and am sure they are very happy. With just a little more time, petite savanne folks your turn will be there for all to see. Way to go hon. prime minister, let’s build back better!
I do not support this administration but kudos.. I like what I see and I’m sure it’s a win-win for majority of the people
This is why you should change your mind and support the PM. He is doing his utmost to please the people.
That’s really good news. As a member of the diaspora, I appreciate that kind of news.
this looks beautiful..just one observation, pave the roads or asphalt lay out, because one can imagine after a shower of rain…the conditions these roads are going to be like
Didn’t you read? “He noted that contracts for development of roads in the area have already been discussed.”
forreal if you had taken some time you would have read this statement from the Minister:
“The Minister commented that the project is “virtually complete,” as all fifty homes have the necessary utilities, and FLOW is available. He noted that contracts for development of roads in the area have already been discussed.”
Sometimes we just need to take our time and read before we comment.
This include consideration and patience, virtues that some lack. They should pray to God for them.
When it’s good say it’s good. Awesome job pm and team
LOOKING GOOD DUBIQUE..
Say one say two..it looks good, While some may be criticizing, I’m sure the residents are really grateful.
Amen and amen.
