Employment outlook for 2015/2016

job opportunitiesThe employment outlook for this new financial year is encouraging based on the 2015/2016 National Budget.

The Hon. Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Roosevelt Skerrit listed the number of jobs to be created by capital projects.

“During the fiscal year,” he began. “The following direct jobs are being created Madam Speaker:

250 created in the banana and plantain industries;
28 skilled and unskilled workers will be engaged in the abattoir;
22 workers will be engaged full time at the coffee plant;
46 poultry farmers will now have sustained employment;
Over 500 workers will be engaged in the construction of Range/Kempinski Development;
Placement for 30 new graduates under the National Employment Programme and continuing engagement of 400 interns;
10 full-time employees will be engaged in the pack houses and additional officers will be taken on in a part-time basis based on the level of activity.”

“In addition to those highlighted, we expect that the investments being made will create additional jobs,” the Prime Minister said.

In addition to those direction jobs, other institutions are being empowered to create even more jobs.

He continued, “Reference is made to the funding made available to the AID Bank, the Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT) and the National Development Foundation of Dominica (NDFD) to on-lend to qualifying businesses.

“A number of small and micro businesses will continue to receive technical and financial support from Government’s Small Business Support Unit (SBSU),” the Prime Minister said. “Madam Speaker, the National Employment Programme (NEP) was introduced in December 2013 with the purpose of enhancing the employment opportunities of the unemployed and the underemployed, by placing them in a work environment where they would acquire the skills and attitudes that are necessary to obtain and to hold on to a job.”

    I as an individual i have my reservations about a lot of things, not just our past and present government but amongst us, our family, the people we work with, socialize with, even me, I do have reservations about me, there are things that I want to do better, to create a better environment for my children and its hard to do so but I am getting there, I always find work t o do because I love being independent. some of us want the actual fish instead of being taught how to fish, yes that’s right so we all like it. if we could just get a money and don’t work we would roll just so. lets just see what’s going to happen in the next five yrs. Rome was not built in a day but Rome was built. A lot of Dominicans who have been abroad for many years have not been to visit you think its only because they are so busy working or they just decide to stay abroad? Awah, things bad with them too, they brokes, money not pumping in other big/small countries. lets be grateful and move on and pray…

    peter potter, haven’t we all in some point in our lives promised that we are going to do this and that and have never actually done it due to other things getting in the way? Stop bashing our country, if you are a father, a boss, you know someone in control, I do hope you are on the straight and narrow and is totally flawless when comes to decision making. What we need to do is pray for our country and bring ideas in, suggestions instead of negative critics like YOU! Encourage our young people to be self sufficient, to be self employed, get a hobby which can turn into a money making business in the future/career. Another thing, regardless of how lame you and others may think or see this employment outlook is, there are others who do not share your sentiments, they will jump to it/eat. So Mr. Potter, perfection, flawlessness, judging is not part of the human nature. When we are gone our generation is left behind. CRITIZE BUT WITH A GOOD DOMINICAN SOUL WHO WANTS TO FEEL THE…

      Unlike you I know that Dominica is not going anywhere as long as this regime is in power. Unlike you, I do not live of promises nor am I prepared to listen to the same old promises year in year out and that for 15 years now, only for them to never materialise. In other words here I am a Realist and there you are a Dreamer. Have you ever heard the old saying: promises are a comfort to a fool. So there we go!
      I would like for Dominica to do well but I know that is impossible under the present regime. The equation is very simple, if the regime syphons of every Dollar that reaches the country at least 50 cent, it just can not work. The problem with most Dominicans is that they are quite happy to accept second best and you my friend are a prime example. So if you want your children to have a better life, I applaud that. But Garcon, I am afraid you saddled the wrong horse.

    And how much will these people be making? You can work long and hard and not make much, especially considering how expensive everything is.

    I wonder what his definition of encouraging is considering the number of men that can’t find work so that they can eat without stealing something to sell.

    How embarrassing to only read this nonsense. Didn’t we hear the same thing some 8 month ago and going further back in the last budget speech as well. Have any jobs materialised since? I leave you all to answer that question.

    Skerrit you are either mad or are under the influence of some substance which keeps you high, or simply inebriated all the time. When you say 250 jobs will be created in the banana and plantain industry, what are you saying? Are we to assume there will be 250 new first time farmers, or are you suggesting that 250 workers will gain employment on the existing farm?

    Are you mad ? The abattoir you are rambling about is already dead, you need millions of pigs, chicken to sustain that, it cannot happen!, I am not even commenting on the rest

    This model of governance is outdated. Government should enact policies and create a business friendly environment to encourage investors to set up shop on the island. As the main employer, you are forced to implement draconian taxes such as 15% VAT on goods and services, which serves as a giant deterrent to growth.
    The Small Business Unit is a big partisan joke. We know that it caters to Labor supporters as Mr. Shillingford lamented his struggle to gain the appropriate licenses to establish his Red Jasper Jewelry Business.
    We also experience this continued partisan nonsense with the interference of the Lindo Park Project. It’s time for our “Pretend Selfish Leaders” to grow up and wear some big boy and big girl pants. It’s a crying shame what you guys have done to this island because of pure greed, utter selfishness and a power hungry myopic mentality.

    So how many will be working on the new hospital since it wasn’t mentioned. Is it going to happen or it is just another pretty picture like the tourism minister said. I wonder where we are going on this ride. we have been taken for rides and never gotten to our destination. I wonder where this 5 year ride will take us this time. sad days in Dominica.

      That’s a good question. I thought this July was supposed to be the ground breaking ceremony for the commencement of the new hosptial. Hold on tight This five year ride is heading into outer space in a hurry.

        They said July but they did not say what year! So, your guess is as good as mine.
