The final report of the Dominica Country Poverty Assessment (CPA) for 2008/2009 was formally presented to the Government of Dominica.

Mc. Donald Thomas, representing the Caribbean Development Bank, handed the report to The Hon. Minister of State in The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Senator Hon. Alvin Bernard.

A handing over ceremony to mark the occasion was held on last week.  The ceremony indicated another stage in the collaboration between the government of Dominica and the Caribbean Development Bank.

“As a result of this exercise, Government is better positioned to deal with the socio-economic factors within the country and is therefore able to formulate a more targeted approach to dealing with the issue of poverty. The Caribbean Development Bank and its partners, Department for International Development of the United Kingdom, Canada International Development Agency (CIDA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has once again risen to the occasion in assisting developing countries such as ours in its efforts to eradicate poverty,” Bernard said.

Bernard also said that this exercise undertaken by the CDB also compliments Government’s efforts in measuring progress as it relates to the millennium development goals.

“We would like to give the CDB the assurance that this handing over of the final CPA report signals the commencement of our work to ensure that we meet the benchmarks set and that in the next few years, when another CPA is undertaken, it will reflect significant improvement in the social status of our people,” he said.

The report showed a reduction of indigence from ten percent in 2002 to three point one percent in 2008/09.

You mean we are still poor like that Big -Bannan?.

Kids still go to school without shoes?.
Students still use candles and Kerosine lamps to complete their home work?
Children have to bom a ride to get to school.
Every month DOMLEC & DOSACO have to disconnect the same people because they cann’t make ends meet?
The people still go to stand pipes and streams to collect their drinking water?
The people do not receive barrels and boxes from overseas because the Customs are too high?
The supermarkets do not sell that much any more ? So how is that?
Banks don’t give loans any more, except one is working for the govt.
There is a lack of dwelling houses to live because people cann’t afford to make one.
The young school leavers cann’t get jobs?

Big- Bannan, things are bad if so be. We need a jack to jack up D/ca.

Mr. Big-banana I truly understand your sentimental feelings, no government should be speaking about development, when they are failing to look to the needs of children education, health and infrastructure of the road, ECT, ECT for example SVG government give every student in St Vincent & the Grenadines a laptop, they don’t have to travel to take care of their heart, kidney and so on… they are building and inter airport for over ½ billion dollars! Senator Hon. Alvin Bernard that is what you call development for a country.

Thats a damn lie!!!!! Bout ‘SVG government give every student in St Vincent & the Grenadines a laptop’. Not even the United States government can afford to do that for all their children. You people must stop this political hatred and be more mature. Opposition is a hell of a wonderful thing for every country, but one is to be objective when opposing and apply factual stuff when making arguments. I am sick of this immaturity on this forum. Bunch of idiots.

The study may “show” that but on the ground face to face the monster looking a little fatter to me personally. Don’t mean to tell people how to do their jobs but in 02-05 I definitely didn’t see as many “people” sleeping on the sidewalks of roseau as I do now

First why is 2008/2009 Report being delivered in 2011? And are we truely a developing country, at what pace, and who exactly is reaping the benifits. A staggering 56% of our children still go to school in the back of Pick-up trucks; still no computers at most schools;no projectors; no teachers with formal knowledge of computers and technologies.. no labs to teach students about developing science and technology. Still no Traffic Lights and still no one actually stops at stop signs. Are we truely developing?

Anonymous, I think you should place ANONYMASS as your name instead. If think Big-bannan did not asked some pertinent questions, you are an imbecile. You are telling someone to shut up and that is all you have to say? If you think they don’t make sense, then say something that makes sense. People are free to share their opinion, and I appreciate DNO creating this forum to do that, but telling someone to shut up is stepping over the line.

In my opinion, I was a little taken-aback a handing over CEREMONY of a Poverty Assessment Report- Ceremony for everything – what the hen!
